To ask how many bras you wear in a week?

Please help settle an argument? My 13 yr old has just asked me for more bras, she has 6 (plus a sports bra) so 7, and likes to change them and wash them after each wear. I think this is utterly ridiculous, I change mine every 2/3 days, she thinks i’m minging.

To complicate it she’s a small back but already in an F cup so it’s quite difficult and expensive to get a bra for her. So just wondering what everyone else does?

I change every day but only because I have psorasis and the gunk I have to put on it gets on my bras. I also have to be careful in case of infections etc.

Otherwise I would be a much less frequent changer.

littlecabbage · 25/03/2018 13:45

Every other day. When I buy a new bra, I always buy two pairs of the matching knickers, so that I can keep it all co-ordinating!

Jenny17 · 25/03/2018 13:49

At this point I’m wondering whether people rewear tights like they rewear bras.

BackforGood · 25/03/2018 13:50

"so why not wash each evening and they'll be dry for the day after."

Because life is too short!

She's already got 7 bras though - she'd only have to do it once a week, aside from the general wash he Mum does each week. things being, this is an alternative to put to OP's dd,which she can choose if she cannot bring herself to do the normal thing, of wear a bra more than one time before it gets washed. It is about the dd having an option, without the OP spending unnecessarily.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2018 13:50

Jenny - tights are not the same as bras because feet sweat a lot and smell.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2018 13:51

"She's already got 7 bras though"

Someone upthread said they had 2 bras and changed every day. That means hansdwashing (waste of time) or machine washing (waste of resources) every day.

yumchoc · 25/03/2018 13:52

Definitely one per day just like every thing else

This article was written in response to a previous MN thread on the bra washing debate

^Sharon Bell, Head of Design and Product at Ultimo explained that it was all to do with how often you wear a specific bra, rather than an actual timeline: ‘We recommend washing your bra every two to three wears’.

However, there are some varying factors, which are really down to common sense.

Sharon says, ‘this really depends on your daily activities, for example a sports bra should be washed after every wear,’ and of course, if you’re sweating more than usual (hello hottest tube lines), then you should wash your bra as soon as you take it off.^

The Good Housekeeping Institute actively recommend against washing bras too often

Washing your bra too often can do more harm than good. "Over-washing can damage the elasticity, which is essential for providing the proper support," says Lexie Sachs, product analyst in the Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

^Unless you're really sweaty, wait three or four wears before washing.

"Every few wears should be sufficient, but it does depend on your activity level," says Sachs. "For instance, if you're outside on a humid day and end up sweating a lot, you'll want to wash your bra sooner. On the other hand, if you throw a bra on for a couple hours, that might not count as a 'wear.'^

I only wear one if I'm going out otherwise happy to be droopy. I tend to alternate between 2 bras generally although I've got a drawer full that I rarely wear.
However, as she has a large bust for one so young, I'd be inclined to provide extra bras if she asked them.

Desmondo2016 · 25/03/2018 14:59

From reading this I can happily admit that I am minging!!!

habibihabibi · 25/03/2018 15:11

Abroad in a hot climate where the choice of undies is poor so I bulk buy in the summer back in the UK. I've 2 sports bras and 2 of each white, beige and black. I wear a fresh bra twice a day as either do some type of exercise or intend to and change into a sports bra and wash the day bra .

Idobelieveinfairies2018 · 25/03/2018 15:16

@newmum not nessaccarily regarding larger busted, I'm currently wearing a 38j, need a 36K but that's a whole other thread lol, and don't need 2 change my bras everyday unless it's warm out. I used 2 get boob sweat but I discovered about 4 years ago that anti persperiant is not just for ur arm pits and have not had a problem with sweat.

I'm also another 1 who doesn't have boob flesh anywhere near my arm pit when I'm wearing a bra so dunno?

anxious2017 · 25/03/2018 15:16

Another example of Mumsnetters being nuts Grin

I don't know anyone who wears a fresh bra every day.

I only own two bras. I can't afford any more. They're both two years old. I wear one all week, it gets washed at the weekend, repeat.

Petalflowers · 25/03/2018 15:20

I wear a bra for a few days. My boobs don’t sweat. I’m not minging,

Quite often go bra-less when slobbiimg around at home also.

flippyfloppyflower · 25/03/2018 15:31

anxious2017 everyone I know do wash theirs daily, just because folk do things differently doesn't make it wrong... choices and all that

strawberriesandcream23 · 25/03/2018 17:34

I wear a fresh once each day- she’s right , wearing more than once is minging

starlight13 · 25/03/2018 17:37

I wear each one 2-4 times before washing it. Think we wash clothes too often these days which isn't great for the environment. On any synthetic item of clothing, over 1500 micro fibres are released from each item each time it's washed so I'm all for cutting down on washing ☺

manicmij · 25/03/2018 17:43

If they are decent ones then washing a lot will ruin them.Changing each day does seem excessive unless your DD is into very physical sweaty sports all the time. Tell her you will only be paying out for cheap supermarket ones (they do cover the awkward sizes) if she wants to change everyday. 3/4 days for me.

MumofBoysx2 · 25/03/2018 17:44

Every day. I have worn them more than that sometimes but it always feels a bit like you would feel if you wore the same socks twice !

genius1308 · 25/03/2018 17:51

Definitely a 4-5 wears before washing kinda girl. This thread has really got me thinking though because I don't bat an eyelid at putting the same bra on day after day but there is not one single other item of clothes (pj's included) that I would wear more than once! I do get a shower EVERY morning and then I get a bath EVERY night before going to bed, I love to feel clean...so why do I not feel the same about my bra 🤔. Don't know the answer! Maybe if I had lots of good, nice fitting bras I'd change everyday but I'm in the same boat as lots of the other posters here...I'm a 30H and the price is ridiculous. I have 2 good fitting bras, 1 black and 1 nude, and a couple of 'going out' bras, you know the ones...look really nice and give you a great shape but you can't wait to get them off after a few hours wear. When most bras in my size are £40-£50 a pop I can't afford to buy loads!

swanlife · 25/03/2018 17:54

Was in the same situation as your DD at her age. Small backs and big cups sizes are impossible to find (if you're at 30 back or lower) and really expensive. Only now 6 years later do I have more than two on rotation. I now have four (gasp) and I will wear them till they are marking or smelling because I can't afford to buy more and I'm currently using a laundrette (so can't just chuck them in a wash by themselves). Six is plenty!! I coped with two for most of my teenage years!!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 25/03/2018 17:55

I wear a fresh once each day- she’s right , wearing more than once is minging

Do whatever you like, but it's really not.

Icanttakemuchmore · 25/03/2018 17:57

I used to change my bra every day like my knickers but some are so uncomfortable that I now resort to every other day for bras.

HelenaDove · 25/03/2018 17:58

"so why not wash each evening and they'll be dry for the day after"

An underwired bra takes THREE DAYS to dry in the middle of winter and they have to drip dry as you cant squeeze water out due to the wire.

MN stupidity has reached a new level.
