DS stabbed DD in the head with a fork. Normal sibling stuff?

DS (7) stabbed DD (5) in the head with a fork at the dinner table.

I didn't see it, but her head was bleeding when I came into the kitchen. They fight like cat and dog and it's usually six of one and half of a dozen anyway, so I told him to say sorry and dinner carried on.

Told DH just now when he got in from the pub and he think it's terrible and not normal.

But I think all siblings fight and they're only little. AIBU?

If a 7 year old stabbed your DD in the head with a fork at school, would you think it was normal behaviour?

DullAndOld · 24/03/2018 10:41

no it's not normal, I was joking.
Our parents had the 'six of one half a dozen of the other' mentality.
I was that battered younger sister, and neither of them did fuck all, not even when I had to stay home from school because my face was so battered.

I don't talk to my brother either.

Uniglo18 · 24/03/2018 10:41

No not normal at all for a sibling fight. How would you react if he stabbed her with the knife instead of a fork? It's only one step away, you need to come down hard on him now. There has to be consequence for his actions before he thinks violence towards females is acceptable.

Jaygee61 · 24/03/2018 10:42

Not normal at all. My brother is two years older than me and we did fight and hit each other sometimes but he would never have stabbed me with anything. Best of friends now btw.

DextroDependant · 24/03/2018 10:43

That's awful your poor DD got stabbed with a fork and you did nothing. Confused

LagunaBubbles · 24/03/2018 10:47

I'm shocked at your response. What if it had been a knife he had picked up? How much force would you have to stab to draw blood with a fork, a lot!

user1955 · 24/03/2018 10:52

If it happened at school your son could face an exclusion. So, yes you should be taking it very seriously.

nellieellie · 24/03/2018 10:58

To draw blood means that he used considerable force - ie that he intended to really hurt her. Had it been in the eye or soft bit to side of head, you would have been in A and E with severe consequences. Yes, this could have been a moment of impulse immediately regretted, but your reaction has told him it’s no big deal. To me, he should have been taken down from the table, taken upstairs for a serious talk. You should have told him you needed to discuss with DH so you could agree on consequences. This could be stuff like a week screen ban, together with a way or “making up” - so doing something for his sister, and doing household chores. I’d also ask him to think of what he should have done to react instead of using violence. I would also tell him that had he been a little older, this would have been viewed as a criminal offence. Yes, I would try to shock him. I would also say that you would talk to him again after the week’s screen ban to discuss whether his behaviour was now ok.

Lacucuracha · 24/03/2018 11:00

Your dd is only 5, so there is an imbalance between your dc and not as simple as half of one and six of dozen of the other.

Please don't let behaviour normalise.

NutElla5x · 24/03/2018 11:04

DullAndOld I feel you.My mum did nothing when my older brother battered me (my Dad did,but my brother was careful not to do it when he was around). It was pretty miserable when I think back & I probably still hold some resentment, but the good thing is I'm now very watchful that that shit doesn't go on with my kids-I want them to feel protected not emotionally abandoned.

Nutella xx :(

It only stopped when I left home..

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/03/2018 11:13

My 7 year DS is shocked by this and says no one in his class would stab anyone with a fork. Some of those kids enjoy fighting but would not go this far. What are you going to do?

StinkPickle · 24/03/2018 11:14

What the HELL

I have a 6 and 4 year old they wouldn’t DREAM of hurting each other. If they did I’d go absolutely fucking apeshit and I can assure you they wouldn’t do it twice.

Thanks for comments I am reading them all.

Pickle. Sadly not everyones kids are saints, though

NotUmbongoUnchained · 24/03/2018 11:28

I would be mad if my kids did that to each other.
But.... I did stab my brother once.

DS stabbed DD in the head with a fork. Normal sibling stuff?
Italiangreyhound · 24/03/2018 11:30

No, not normal. Big punishment needed. I'd be looking ayvsone external help. An evaluation of some sort for your Don and/or a child psychologist to help them build a better relationship.

If someone stabbed me in the head with a fork I would not carry on with a meal and feel safe. You need to do something. He is two years older. Six to one and half a dozen to the other is a cop out.

PlumsGalore · 24/03/2018 11:38

I'm not sure, mine fought like two alley cats right until early teens and DD would often launch herself at DS with something in her hand and try to hit him simply because he was bigger and stronger.

What isn't normal is that you played down the severity of what he did, on this occasion a simple sorry was completely insufficient and he needed to be punished and made to understand just how dangerous his actions were. He hasn't learned that this is wrong, so may do it again.

Oh the joys of having perfect children that never fight.

OohMavis · 24/03/2018 11:40

That really must have hurt, your poor DD. There's something seriously wrong here if your son thinks it's acceptable to attack her with a fork, and if you think all that should happen is him saying sorry.

My brother slammed my hand in our heavy kitchen door once, on purpose, because I was 'annoying' him. It still fucks me off to this day that all he was made to do was say sorry. He broke three of my fingers. Your DD will remember this!

Uniglo18 · 24/03/2018 11:44

So what are you going to do op?

Spikeyball · 24/03/2018 11:47

Write a feature for the Scum I expect.

Allthebestnamesareused · 24/03/2018 11:49

You have to stab someone pretty hard with a fork (cutlery) to draw blood!!

I assume DS is the golden child.
