Just got on a bus in my village with a £10 note the fare i was getting was £4 not ideal but it was genuinely all i had on me ( no time to change it in a shop) bus driver stated had no change and could issue a credit note for the money owed to me.I said I'm sorry but I need the changeplus I have no need to travel on any more buses to use up the credit pls could you let me on? he refused resulting me in being late for an appointment

I tried to get a bus with my family in London, I didn't realise they don't take cash, and his card machine wasn't working. So he offered to take us for free, even though I didn't ask him to. It's what most decent bus drivers would do. Op, yanbu.

Family121 · 22/03/2018 19:44

He tried to give you a credit note therefore he actually didn't refuse travel, you declined this option meaning you refused to travel.

Graphista · 22/03/2018 19:44

What EXACTLY did you say to the "senior bus driver" driving instructor ?

I'm guessing more "he wouldn't let me on" than the complete explanation you've given here.

Paraphrasing but

Poor planning on YOUR part does not constitute an emergency on the bus drivers! YOU were unprepared and running late - that isn't the bus drivers fault.

How old are you? I'm in my 40's and would never assume I'd get change on a bus and I've lived all over uk. I can well remember most buses in 70's and 80's in urban and rural areas being "exact fare only".

As MANY pps have said they're limited in what they can carry both logistically and safety wise. Many buses have for years used the locked drop boxes that passengers drop their fare into but that drivers can't access.

Yet another

Op Aibu?
Almost all posters : YES!
Op: no I'm not! And latching onto the VERY occasional poster that agrees with them, backtracking or giving dubious "extra" evidence 🙄

YANBU OP

Where I live we only have Stagecoach bus services and whilst they appreciate the correct change where possible, they are always willing to give change for notes providing it is a reasonable amount (e.g. paying a £4 fare with a £10 would be fine but £4 fare paid with £50 would probably be refused)

I often reload my monthly bus pass on the bus. It usually costs £40.99 but in January they did a promo where they reduced the cost to £30.99 for the month. They didn't pre-advertise this (even the drivers only found out on the first day of the promo) so when I got on the bus with my 2 £20 notes and £1 coin to renew my pass I was stuck as I didn't have any other notes and didn't have enough change to buy a single fare for that journey. As this wasn't my fault, I was willing to pay and the driver didn't want to empty his float he let me on the bus anyway. By the time I was getting off the bus a few others had got on and one had paid for a weekly pass (£9.90) with a £10 note so the driver could issue my pass and give me the right change. If he hadn't then I would have got a free bus ride and known to change one of the £20s for £10s before getting my bus home.

I don’t remember the last time I got on a bus- so if I had to get one I wouldn’t have a clue how much the fare would be, so how am I meant to have the right change? I would probably give a £10 note as I would hope that would be enough to cover the fare. I didn’t realise you need the exact amount but at least I know now should I find myself needing to get a bus anywhere.

Sofabitch · 22/03/2018 20:03

The bus drivers here get given a £20 float when they start. It's then there responsibility to keep the float going. Which basically ethier means a lot of time queing unpaid in banks as a £20 float can go in 1 trip. Or topping up the float with your own money, which would not get replaced if you were robbed or had your work bag stolen.

He offered you a reasonable solution you cpuld have taken the credit note to the office at the bus station and got the money back

snozzlemaid · 22/03/2018 20:18

A driver could lose his job if he's caught giving anyone a free ride.

dragonara53 · 22/03/2018 21:09

My husband's a bus driver and he doesn't have much of a float for change so if someone gets on his bus with a note then he gives them a change voucher. Most people either have passes or pay by their phone's now.

OJZJ · 22/03/2018 21:12

Standard practice in our town you pay with correct money or get off and walk there was a hoo haa when a bus driver did it to a 11 or 12 yr old child a couple of yrs ago who had lost his bus pass and
Didnt have the full fare ....personally I think if every passenger on the bus felt it so disgusting they should have given the child 20p each he would have soon had enough! I used the bus daily a few years back and had to suck up losing bits of money here and there as neither me or the driver had enough change

IllustriouslyIllogical · 22/03/2018 21:29

Next time give him the tenner & sit near him - you'll soon get the money back as the next 10 Mumsnetters all give him the exact money.....

MissSeventies · 23/03/2018 00:52

I am sorry, well no not sorry, have to chime in on this one. It is 2018 who has cash on them at all never mind tne correct change.

I think you shot yourself in the foot a bit by not getting on, but it wasn't fair either to expect you to effectively throw away £6. Same goes for breaking it in a shop that is assuming you have at least £1 to waste

FranticallyPeaceful · 23/03/2018 00:56

Next time ask him to pluck it out of his arse, or maybe thin air. Might solve it

Purplealienpuke · 23/03/2018 07:44

I'm sorry but YABU. It's not a free ride service. He offered you a credit note so you could have travelled. You made yourself late I think.
Where I am the drivers don't touch the money at all. You put it in a slot. If you pay too much tough. Or you have a bus pass.
I expect you won't get on a bus with a tenner again.
