No it's not.

The rules are not the same.

NoFucksImAQueen · 21/03/2018 16:57

I didn't refuse to pay,I had more than the amount needed.

So what would have been your ideal outcome? You didn't want a credit note, you know he couldn't give you change so what did you expect him to do if not let you oh without paying?

SharronNeedles · 21/03/2018 17:17

Some harsh replies!!
My buses take card (thank god) but I've never ever heard of them refusing someone before for this. It's not your fault they don't have change.

In my neck of the woods not only do they give change for all notes (though a £50 would probably raise eyebrows) if they couldn't change your note they would let you on for free as you are ready and willing to pay.

He could have just let you on. Bus drivers in London do it sonetimes when negative on oyster card

angryburd · 21/03/2018 17:57

^ why should he?

Jon66 · 21/03/2018 17:59

Make a complaint and tell the bus company they need to get into the real world. Our local buses have contactless. Irrespective of that, paying with a 10 pound note should not be an issue for a 4 pound fare, whereas a 50 pound note for a 4 pound fare would be.

HoarseMackerel · 21/03/2018 18:10

Stagecoach who are probably the biggest bus company had adverts on the TV saying that needing the correct change is old fashioned and you can pay with a note and are welcome to do so and they always carry change.
If a bus company hasn't moved on from that, well, they need to move with the times.
They also do contactless and WiFi and charging points too!
I would try and find out what their real policy is.
I bet he did have enough change but just didn't want to give it out.
I don't think you are being U.

dustarr73 · 21/03/2018 18:13

Make a complaint about what. The bus driver didnt have change.Whats he to do,pull it out of his arse.

angryburd · 21/03/2018 18:20

"I bet he did have enough change but just didn't want to give it out."

Yes. Of course he did. He just decided that he couldn't be bothered, and would rather piss someone off and risk a complaint. Totally.

HoarseMackerel · 21/03/2018 18:39

Oh come on!
If he wasn't giving out change for notes and everyone was giving him the correct change, then he had change!
If he'd just started his route, he would have also had change as he would have brought his full tray with him.

angryburd · 21/03/2018 18:40

Maybe he doesn't actually have access to the money? On many buses you don't give your fare to the driver, you have to put it into the ticket machine to get a ticket.

HoarseMackerel · 21/03/2018 18:43

Also, just looked at Stagecoach and Arriva's policy and although slightly different, both say they don't refuse travel.

NFATR · 21/03/2018 18:44

Stagecoach who are probably the biggest bus company had adverts on the TV saying that needing the correct change is old fashioned and you can pay with a note and are welcome to do so and they always carry change

That doesn't mean that they guarantee to always have the exact change every time!

NorbertTheDragon · 21/03/2018 18:45

Yes of course he didn't want to give the change out. Hmm I'm sure it's more effort to give a credit note out than to just hand some change over.

They don't get given hundreds of pounds in change you know, so it only takes a few people to give tenners for a small fare and it wipes out their change.

Anyway, got to go, I'm on a bus. And I didn't pay. Wink

(Because I'm accompanying my DC who has a disabled persons bus card)

ForalltheSaints · 21/03/2018 18:46

In London you cannot pay by cash at all.

Amanduh · 21/03/2018 18:48

It’s not hard. People are told over and over again to have chanfe.

Amanduh · 21/03/2018 18:48

Or even change...

The two main bus companies in our area do give change, as does a smaller one I used to use, sometimes. It's not that unusual. I often give £10.10 for a £6.10 day ticket.

So, if op doesn't catch the bus a lot then maybe they were expecting the same.

NorbertTheDragon · 21/03/2018 18:50

"Whilst our drivers offer change, it is appreciated if the correct fare can be tendered wherever possible. Please note that if a driver has insufficient change available, a 'Change Voucher' may be issued instead. This can be used for payment or exchanged for cash on another bus."

This is what it says for our local buses. Seems readable to me, and what the OP was offered, but refused!

NorbertTheDragon · 21/03/2018 18:51

Reasonable, not readable! Although it is readable too.

PickAChew · 21/03/2018 18:57

One of those is arriva. They started taking contactless, about a year ago, but I soon discovered that it didn't always work in rural areas, leaving me having to break a 20 (life would be so much easier if cash points dishing out fivers weren't rarer than hen's teeth). I used the app for a while when I needed a monthly pass but it was unbelievably flaky and often deleted all my tickets at random, again not being possible to resync it until I was back in a strong signal area.
