All the parking machines in my town don’t give change either.

italiancortado I think you've become a bit too invested in this thread

No true learner driver is going to be driving a bus with the public on it as they won't be insured to do so as they don't yet have a PCV licence.

More often its someone teaching a qualified bus driver a new route that they haven't driven before.

Standard respond from an OP who is hanging on in desperation trying to prove their completely invalid point.

NorbertTheDragon · 21/03/2018 13:34

They have them mentoring new drivers here, but not actually teaching them to drive on the buses the public use. They have special buses for that with L plates on.

How much change should a driver carry round? If everyone gets on with a £10 he'd have to carry stacks of money, which is ridiculous!

I've never had a problem with buying something small in the shops and giving them a £10 note so I have change for the bus. Shops have far more change than bus drivers.

Sorry OP, it was your fault. He offered you a credit note. You refused.

The only time I've heard about buses letting people travel free is women/child stranded late at night. Which you weren't.

And as for the public transport should be free. Yes, that would be nice.
So should food, and housing, and energy and water and many other things.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 13:35

Italian, I have seen driving instructors on buses supervising new drivers.

New drivers doing route training, yes. Learner driver as the OP stated, no.

WhiteCoyote · 21/03/2018 13:36

Learner bus drivers do not have the correct licence to carry the public. Brand new drivers learning the bus routes are supervised. Also the senior bus driver could have been an inspector going back to the depot and was chatting to the driver on the way back. Was definitely not a learner.

BakedBeans47 · 21/03/2018 13:43

YABU but where I live the buses say they don’t take £20 notes. Therefore it might not be unreasonable to expect change from a tenner. Firstbus in Glasgow have been exact change only for decades however.

I don’t travel by bus often but I had assumed most bus companies had caught up with the 21st century and allowed payment by app/bank card.

Not sure what you expected the driver to do OP?

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 13:45

Italian, I have seen driving instructors on buses supervising new drivers. It does happen. They can also be assessing existing drivers to ascertain that they remain at the correct standard, I believe

New drivers, yes. Not learner drivers.

Lifeisabeach09 · 21/03/2018 13:58

Italiancortado,
I've taken many a bus trip with trainee bus drivers taking on members of the public under the supervision of an instructor (which I assume is a senior bus driver) who wears a high viz jacket.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 14:04

Learner drivers are not legally allowed to carry passengers.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/03/2018 14:04

I'm chuffed to bits to learn that buses are now essentially free, as they can't refuse yo travel, regardless of whether you pay or not. That's nice isn't it, free buses, whoop.

Op, I cannot fathom how you are not understanding what almost everyone is saying. How many people saying yabu, would it take for you to understand, a thousand, a million, never?

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 14:07

under the supervision of an instructor (which I assume is a senior bus driver)

Also please don't assume a driving instructor is a 'senior' bus driver. A driving instructor is so much more than a levelled up bus driver.

NFATR · 21/03/2018 14:08

Doesn't need to be either. Bus drivers mentor and help other bus drivers. They don't need to be either senior or instructors.

Jesus. The OP said 'a learner driver. A learner driver absolutely does need to be under the supervision of an instructor.

Tweetiepie1000 · 21/03/2018 14:16

It’s completely illegal to carry the general public on a bus as a learner driver, with or without an instructor.

It would invalidate any insurance and would probably carry a prison sentence for the learner driver, certainly a heavy fine, loss of licence and community service. The bus company would be struck off and loose their license. The manager/owner/supervisors would all be up shit creek also.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 21/03/2018 14:18

No cash at all in London now. Always have the correct change OP.

Basseting · 21/03/2018 14:23

The driver will have a camera on him.
If he/she breaks Co rules they will be disciplined.
Would you expect other public servants to break Co rules on camera?

NFATR · 21/03/2018 14:29

Yes, but the point being that she could have assumed him to be a learner driver because he was being supervised, when he wasn't.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 14:31

That doesn't change the fact that learners don't carry passengers. The whole point of me posting that was in case the OP had incorrectly assumed!

NFATR · 21/03/2018 14:36

Yes, I am agreeing with you! Why are you arguing with me?

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 14:38

It's because I am 'invested' Grin

TotHappy · 21/03/2018 14:38

Wait, off topic but... It's not illegal for learner drivers to carry passengers in general is it? In cars? When i was learning i had my mum beside me supervising but sometimes my dad or sister in the back.
