Interesting how things differ area to area.
Bus drivers carry change where I live. They bring on that change thingy and leave with it when their shift ends and another driver takes over. Sometimes they don't have enough change but will generally change a £10 note when they are able. They occasionally change £20 when the occasional warrants (ie large fare).

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:05

The other bus driver was a senior one who was stood supervising a learner bus driver

Nicknacky it had been that long since been on a bus I genuinely thought he'd have change

Nicknacky · 21/03/2018 13:06

So a senior bus driver told you a driver can never refuse travel? I’m gonna start taking buses!!

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 13:08

apologies, I didn't realise that my views on this specific situation were to be codified as universally applicable laws

You didn't realise that when you say "But if their policy is to give change they should have it available" then you actually had to mean that? Are you confused as to how words work somehow?
He didn't have change for OP. He can't possibly always have change for everyone.

I didn't refuse to pay,I had more than the amount needed

And you refused to pay it and take the change in a credit note.

Refusing to pay would be me getting on and saying morning id like a free bus ride please
That is what you said. You had the money, you refused to give it and take the credit note, and then you asked to get on anyway. You literally asked for a free bus ride.

ButchyRestingFace · 21/03/2018 13:08

Were there no other passengers on the bus when you boarded?

Where I live, usually what happens when someone gets on a bus without the correct change is that they ask the other passengers for change - not the driver.

YABU. Driver tried to help you.

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:09

italiancortado it was a bus ticket that could use for the whole day which is why got on another bus for my return journey.I didn't need to spend any more money

This is one of the banes of my life. If I know I'm going to need to catch a bus (or park a car) in an unfamiliar place I have to have my pockets bulging with change in case there are no alternative ways of paying. It's infuriating because there's usually no way of finding out what the fare is until you get on the bus. In some cities the driver has no control: you have to put the exact change into a machine on the bus to get a ticket.

Shops won't give change unless you buy something, and if you pay for a packet of chewing gum with a £10 note they'll often complain. I have identified all the shops with automated checkouts on my regular drive home so I can go into one or two of them and buy small items with large-denomination notes to get change.

The short answer to the OP's question is: the bus company was unreasonable for not publishing its fares, providing the driver with an adequate float to give change or offering an alternative way of paying (e.g. through an app). If the driver has no change there's nothing s/he can do

WhiteCoyote · 21/03/2018 13:11

So basically you complained to a senior bus driver that the first one refused you travel and you have potentially got him into trouble with the company when he did not in fact deny you travel - you kicked up a hissy fit at something beyond his control. Well done 👍🏻

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:11

Skiiltan thanks for a reasonable answer

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 21/03/2018 13:13

I’m not sure what you expect to happen under these circumstances? I’ve once or twice been in this situation and the bus driver has let me off the fare but they’re under no obligation to. I have also got the next bus if they’ve no change for me.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 13:13

it was a bus ticket that could use for the whole day which is why got on another bus for my return journey

Well I'm sure you understand my confusion as you said I have no need to travel on any more buses.

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:14

WhiteCoyote er no I mentioned it to him when got on.No hissy fit needed thanks and I could have only got him into trouble if I had chose to complain. I knew I was partly in the wrong as I've said upthread

@CompleteAisling either you're being deliberately obtuse or you don't understand context clues. I've made it unbelievably clear that I was referring to OP's situation, and I've clarified what I think regarding your imaginary £50 note. Stop spoiling for a fight.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 13:15

The other bus driver was a senior one who was stood supervising a learner bus driver

That would make him a driving instructor fgs.

Now please, tell me how the fuck you managed to access the training busConfused

Nicknacky · 21/03/2018 13:15

I don’t see what you think the driver has done wrong? He had no change, he gave you what is the company policy as an alternative which you said no to. Why do you think you can complain and get him in trouble?

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:18

Nicknacky because anyone in theory could complain about anything but I chose not to as said earlier. The senior bus driver asked me if I wanted to do that giving me the impression that it was something he shouldn't have done

OP posts:
Topseyt · 21/03/2018 13:18

You were wrong, OP. This is quite common now, and is for the safety of the drivers and the passengers. If they carry lots of cash then they become targets for attack and robbery.

Also, bus driver 2 is wrong if they suggested passengers should never be refused travel. Perhaps never refuse a lone female, elderly or disabled passenger late at night in a lonely spot if short on fare, but overall passengers must pay to travel.

They can also refuse travel to unreasonable passengers behaving in a threatening way, or get them removed from the bus if they kick off while on it.

We are fairly rural. You still pay the driver here, or did the last time I used the bus a year or so ago. They did still give change, but it was always preferred if you had correct change, or as close to it as possible.

Nicknacky · 21/03/2018 13:20

sarah you said you could only have got him in trouble IF you complained. You haven’t answered, what do you think he has done wrong?

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:20

italiancortado 😂 where I live trainee drivers are supervised on the job with public on

OP posts:
greenyblue · 21/03/2018 13:21

How long would the credit note last? You know you would definitely never need another bus in that time??

The bus driver used the only option available to him (which is more than some companies). Even drivers with floats may use it all up at any given point.

How did you get to appointment?

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 13:22

either you're being deliberately obtuse or you don't understand context clues. I've made it unbelievably clear that I was referring to OP's situation, and I've clarified what I think regarding your imaginary £50 note. Stop spoiling for a fight

Nonsense. Not my fault you didn't make any sense, and were wrong either way.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 13:24

😂 where I live trainee drivers are supervised on the job with public on

You can stick your emoji dripping with sarcasm where the sun don't shine.

'Learner bus drivers' do not drive joe public about. Ever.

Topseyt · 21/03/2018 13:26

Italian, I have seen driving instructors on buses supervising new drivers. It does happen. They can also be assessing existing drivers to ascertain that they remain at the correct standard, I believe.

That doesn't mean that you are on the training bus.

TotHappy · 21/03/2018 13:27

Wow, i haven't got a bus in years and would def not know you needed the correct change! I wonder if you do round here? It's rural. I cant imagine all the little old ladies paying by app or card. I dont even have a contactless card so that wouldn't work. Don't usually know what the fare will be till i get on, so i would prob take a fiver or tenner with me rather than ten pound of change, and would expect the change, not a credit note. It's not much different from parking machines is it? Unless they say exact money only i expect change and there seems to be enough. Although true, they dont take notes.
I think if that had happened round here, someone would've offered to change your tenner for you on the bus, op.
I think the comment about 'its really annoying or other passengers when people pay cash and want change' is ridiculous. Cash is still acceptable currency, not everyone wants to pay electronically, and if you use the bus then you have to be prepared to wait for other people also using it. Aaah so glad i dont live in a city!
