  • fits with her opinion

the driver was supposed to write you a ticket that means you have to go to the garage and pay the fare within 7 days or so. Not many do this as they can't be bothered. I know this as my husband drove London buses for over a decade. Not sure if other bus companies have different policies though.

dustarr73 · 21/03/2018 12:44

I think the only time you travel for free is if the money machine or teh card swiper are not working.I know i got home for free on a few occasions because of teh leap card reader not working.

Missingstreetlife · 21/03/2018 12:45

Public transport should be free

JacquesHammer · 21/03/2018 12:45

Bus drivers should have a float like most other people who handle cash

Even if it was safe in all areas for drivers to carry float, surely it’s fairly obvious that gets depleted if a lot of people need change?

It’s putting extra pressure on drivers. Here they have a small float but payments from passengers go into a locked box. It’s going to cause delays for them to keep transferring money from fare to float and keep record

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 12:46

Public transport should be free

How do you propose this would work?

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 12:46

the driver was supposed to write you a ticket that means you have to go to the garage and pay the fare within 7 days or so.

He offered. She said no.

JacquesHammer · 21/03/2018 12:47

Public transport should be free

Cool beans. What’s your plan for covering the cost?

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 12:47

Sorry ignore that I thought you meant to go to collect the balance.

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 12:47

the driver was supposed to write you a ticket that means you have to go to the garage and pay the fare within 7 days or so. Not many do this as they can't be bothered

That's not how it works any more, this is not the policy.

Deliverytostore · 21/03/2018 12:48

italiancortado no he didn't. He wanted to keep the change and write her a credit note. That's different to writing a ticket and owing the money to the bus company.

italiancortado · 21/03/2018 12:48

Yes I know. Have already acknowledged my error.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 21/03/2018 12:49

Why should he let you on for free? For all he knows it could be a ruse and you could be merrily getting loads of free bus rides. They may even have ‘mystery passengers’ that check for this sort of thing.

Deliverytostore · 21/03/2018 12:50

italiancortado sorry cross post.
And to the other poster, depends which bus company you are talking about? The one local to me still does.

goose1964 · 21/03/2018 12:51

Our buses give change tickets which you can get redeemed in either the office or on another bus ,or you can use it against another journey. They've just started using card readers so you can use your debit card

Redpony1 · 21/03/2018 12:52

I haven't got a bus since i was at school, i'm Shock at the costs, i imagined they were still 50/80p for a journey Grin

* Totally misses the point of the OP *

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 12:53

I spoke to another bus driver and he said they should never refuse a passenger,he said i could complain but as I was partly wrong decided not to

They can refuse passengers on lots of grounds, including them refusing to pay, like you did.

Ihatemyclients · 21/03/2018 12:53

@CompleteAisling but it wasn't a 50, it was a 10. the most common note in circulation. OP wasn't handing him a gold ingot and asking for change. It was the minimum note you can get from almost all ATMs. It's not unreasonable to expect a bus that has a policy of giving change to be able to produce that change when required.

insancerre · 21/03/2018 12:53

You should have got change from a shop before you got on the bus

CompleteAisling · 21/03/2018 12:55

but it wasn't a 50, it was a 10. the most common note in circulation. OP wasn't handing him a gold ingot and asking for change

That doesn't change the principle. You asserted they should carry enough change for all passengers, so you must mean he should be able to change my 50 as easily as your 10? If not then you don't mean what you said you meant.

Deliverytostore · 21/03/2018 12:58

CompleteAisling a simple google search will tell you that many bus companies all over the country have the same policy of filling a form for the passenger to pay back the fare within 7 days.

snozzlemaid · 21/03/2018 12:59

It only takes a few passengers who pay with notes to clear out their float. So they may start the day with a good amount of change but once that's gone, that's it.
Drivers have to physically carry their float with them. They're not working in a bank with endless supplies of change.
He didn't refuse to take you. You refused his offer of a credit note. Your decision I'm afraid.
Dp is a bus driver and I'm pleased to see drivers being stuck up for on this thread. They normally get a right bashing on here.

Ihatemyclients · 21/03/2018 13:00

@CompleteAisling apologies, I didn't realise that my views on this specific situation were to be codified as universally applicable laws.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a bus service which has a policy of providing change to be able to provide change for a £10 note (especially given the fare was £4). That is the situation we are discussing here.

I also don't think it would be unreasonable for a bus company to have a policy of not accepting notes over a certain value. I can't see how that's relevant to this situation but that's my view if you want it.

Buses in my area don't give change at all and I'm fine with that because that's their policy.

Does that cover all the basis for you?!

Sarahh2014 · 21/03/2018 13:03

I didn't refuse to pay,I had more than the amount needed.Refusing to pay would be me getting on and saying morning id like a free bus ride please

But he offered an alternative and you said no. What did you expect?
