Apart from house

I would say my laptop cost £800 so probably that.

Vet fees for our dogs. Somewhere in the region of about 7k probably, and didn't save them Sad

Car £16k easily the tops after the house. Dog or skiing kit is possibly second both over £1k. I don’t have much else in my life in terms of expenses tbh, I go skiing a couple of times a year and spend a lot of time in the car so for me value for money. Might have to reassess if I ever have kids though.

blaaake · 18/03/2018 14:56

Current car. £85k for an Audi SQ7 that I don't really like anymore. Angry

alittlequinnie · 18/03/2018 14:59

Baby grand piano. £6.5K.

Never spent that much on a car or anything.

I got knocked off my bike and my hand was shattered - had to have screws put in and everything.

Got compensation and instead of investing the money wisely I blew the lot on a Kawai!

I've had it about 5 years now - every single time I sit down to play I can't believe I've got it!

Midnightpony · 18/03/2018 15:02

My wedding . Wedding dress. Wedding rings. Venue. Meal. All individually the most expensive thing ever but then we put them all together!

LBOCS2 · 18/03/2018 15:03

Car, at £15k.

Sofa was a couple of grand.

Oh, and house renovations. They were pricey too.

WillowWept · 18/03/2018 15:11

I've been fortunate enough to afford a number of big expenses over the years but 15+ years ago I spent 7k on a wedding dress.

I'm still married but that expenditure feels ludicrous today.

Coastalcommand · 18/03/2018 15:16

My education. University is expensive, but for me it was worth it.

BigFatGoalie · 18/03/2018 15:21

Besides houses and cars:

School fees ☹️
£2000 on a mulberry handbag.

Tortycat · 18/03/2018 15:29

Aside from the house...
10k on a car
3k ish on 3 months volunteering in africa
Generally a few thousand a year on holidays pre dc - now cottage breaks in the uk so not much...

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/03/2018 15:41

After house and extensions it would be the car ...it was around £25k....

Ratonastick · 18/03/2018 15:41

My car. It’s a Ford Mustang and I am a middle aged woman. I suspect I look absurd and it would have been cheaper to have an affair with a 25 year old. But I just don’t care because it makes me irrationally happy every single day.

80sMum · 18/03/2018 15:43

Aside from the house (including extensions, refurbishments and maintenance) and cars, the most expensive items I've bought have been art works.

As an ongoing outlay though, as opposed to a single purchase, the "children" win hands down! I have never calculated it exactly, but in the last 15 years we must have spent a small fortune on the kids - on their weddings, on helping to finance house purchases, paying for house improvements, Christmas and birthday money, monetary gifts when grandchildren were born etc etc.

RJnomore1 · 18/03/2018 15:47

I've just spent 16k on a car.

Next probably my sofa at 3k

I'll get years out of both though.

NCbecauseIdontwanttooutasaman · 18/03/2018 15:52

Aside from property, my wife's engagement ring paid for with a big chunk of the cash I saved whilst serving in Afghanistan. I like to look at it as something she'll wear every day for decades so only a pound or two a day.

KanielOutis · 18/03/2018 15:55

My engagement and wedding rings come to £1k. Other than that - home renovations. We will have spent £50k going up the place and it only cost £100k to buy!

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2018 15:56

DH has paid for all the big purchases, so I suppose a Phil & Ted's pushchair, which DH thought we didn't need. (I so did, best purchase ever). Actually, I did buy an expensive carpet for our large living room last summer.

I can't tell you how much it cost as I just handed over my card and stuck my finger on my ears and said "Blah, blah, I can't hear you." to the salesman in the shop.

bigKiteFlying · 18/03/2018 15:58

Excluding house and works done on house - ( first house was a money pit despite survey and all the basics needed to be done)

MSc - got me into industry I wanted had to pay fees and 12 months living costs and paid loan all back within a few years.

Wedding - but that broke down into series of bills but all told very tiny do and still cost about 3K.

OU courses - all added up and done before huge price hikes.

Holidays - last on accommodation nudged 1.5 K and travel there and items on it would make that more - takes all year to save for as is mainly so expensive has to be in school holidays and there are a few of us.

LesLavandes · 18/03/2018 16:03

School fees for 2 children

RedPandaMama · 18/03/2018 16:09

My car was an 18 birthday gift, we rent our house, DD is only 7 months and a lot of her stuff (pram, cot, wardrobe etc) was kindly bought for us by DP's family. I haven't actually paid off any of my degree get as I haven't started working so I've managed to avoid lots of big costs so far Grin

Biggest costs I can think of:
Car repairs a couple of weeks ago - £700
2 weeks interrailling around Switzerland - £800
University trip around Europe - £500

Redpriestandmozart · 18/03/2018 16:23

House
Car
Horse
Horse box
Driveway
Saddle
Camera
Laptop

Not all at once, over a 25 year period..

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 18/03/2018 16:27

@quinnie. Our piano was £6.5k too although it's an upright (Grotrian-Steinweg) and it sounds lovely, at least it does when DH is playing it. A good piano is worth spending on and ours gets used every day. My MIL bought a baby grand (very cheap one, a few hundred) that sounds awful but she thought it looked nice.
Other than piano, car (obviously) and engagement ring.
