Posting for traffic, sorry

What areas of Manchester are nice to live in? Minimum 3 bed, family style life

Agree with other posters. Clayton - just no, I live in a neighbouring borough and it's got an awful crime rate. Same applies for the majority of north Manchester. Try parts of Tameside, further up the tram route from Clayton but nicer areas such as Droylsden and Audenshaw. Levenshulme has a lot of appealing factors, but parts of it are still extremely deprived and house prices reflect this in comparison to neighbouring Didsbury. Prestwich is lovely, but pricey - the Didsbury of north Manchester (even though its technically not classed as Manchester. Bury is a good prospect, especially near Unsworth/ Sunnybank or around Bury/ Bolton road going up towards Tottington/ Ainsworth.

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 17/03/2018 19:30

I agree, don't touch levenshulme or longsight.

The best thing about levenshulme is the mcvitie's factory. I had a holiday job doing viewings for a didsbury letting agent and there was a couple of houses in levenshulme that let purely because of the scent from that factory - the houses smelled of golden biscuits all day long!!

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 17/03/2018 19:31

Oh my god, "there WERE a couple of houses"!!!! BlushBlushBlush

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 17/03/2018 19:31

not on Cheddars day Ian - far too cheesy.

Partypopper123 · 17/03/2018 19:39

You could get a decent 3 bed house in bolton for around £150k. 20 mins drive into the city centre, and a 10 mins drive into open country side from many areas in bolton.
There's rough areas and some more expensive areas, but it meets your budget.

Woodfordhound · 17/03/2018 19:49

I live just south of Manchester but it’s pricey and in a lot of it you’d be looking at 350-400k+ for 3beds so for 150k you’re better off looking North of the city as you’ll get much better value for your money. Or maybe central Stockport? Im in Stockport but literally the very Southern tip. Schools are generally good in Stockport as a whole and the Manchester end of Stockport is much more affordable and would make the commute much easier. Greater Manchester isn’t particularly green though.

HerculesMulligan · 17/03/2018 19:49

If you're looking in Chadderton, the bits I'd aim for are either side of the stretch of Middleton Road between Broadway and Mills Hill and off Haigh Lane / Burnley Lane to the west of Broadway.

MoorMummy · 17/03/2018 20:27

Have a look at Bredbury Stockport there’s a few semis at 165 ish might be able to do a deal. My gyms in Bredbury, there’s some lovely houses, decent supermarket etc and a train station or get you to MCr.

Also Reddish , really up and coming now as people are priced out of the Heatons. Getting new restaurants and bars, primary schools ( South Reddish ) are good and the high school is really in the up.

SunshineAllTheWhile · 17/03/2018 20:38

We leave in South Reddish (wouldn’t recommend North Reddish/Gorton) & whilst it’s no didsbury (where we used to live before kids) we have a lovely period 3 bed semi, decent garden, wonderful neighbours & Heaton Moor next door, Didsbury down the road & 20 mins from City Centre. M60 is also round the corner so geographically speaking it’s hard to beat.

People from the more expensive areas of South Manchester are moving here so will only get better and better in terms of cafes, bars etc.

Also have a look at Denton.

Good luck with the move!

Fuzzyduck0 · 17/03/2018 20:49

Thank you all for your suggestions/links, it's definitely food for thought!

Lol-ing at the idea of CheAdle being cheap. Cheadle Hulme no. Cheadle village without any transport links no.
We moved from London and looked at the usual altrincham Bowden hale spots but all too WAG-gy. So we moved to Prestbury.....only one or two wags to contend with.

JustMarriedBecca · 17/03/2018 21:38

You might want to look at Macclesfield.

gillybeanz · 17/03/2018 22:06

I have a friend who lives in Chorlton and has been there for many years,
She can't believe how much her house has increased in value recently, it's mad.

Cheadle Heath? Grin

InspMorse · 17/03/2018 22:11

I really wouldn't discount Derbyshire border especially on the budget you are talking about OP. Yes, you might get something nearer town but it won't be the leafy suburb.
30 mins by train to Manchester Isn't bad.

gillybeanz · 17/03/2018 22:11

The guided bus route is 20 mins from Leigh to city centre, even quicker from Atherton or tyldesley.
The East Lancs is a pain but really not as bad as the junction at Worsley, whatever it's called, I don't drive.
Once you're on the East Lancs, it's fine, it's just queuing to get on the bloody thing if you don't live very close to it.

gillybeanz · 17/03/2018 22:13

I suggested the Derbyshire border too, it really isn't that far away and the transport lincs are great.
Lots of greenery, lovely villages, and you don't have to travel miles, just the bordering villages.

If you want to make money buy this. Next door has an Aston Martin.

userxx · 17/03/2018 23:21

@notangelinajolie I've looked at that a few times but it would cost a fortune to get it up to scratch.

Angie169 · 17/03/2018 23:33

I agree with Ianrush todmorden is lovely but by god its hilly !
Perhaps not the nicest place to live but you will get a lot of house for you money in east Manchester very close to Manchester Citys Ground , Clayton droylsden ashton under lyne and they are all linked by a good bus and tram route.

banannabreadforme · 17/03/2018 23:36

Warrington and Newton-le-Willows

gillybeanz · 18/03/2018 11:47

Wasn't Todmorden the capital of swinging couples?
I'm sure I read an article about it, I'll see if I can find it.
It's absolutely miles from Manchester though, not a quick commute, and bleak in winter.

Greenicicle · 18/03/2018 11:51

Dukinfield/Hyde/Stalybridge/Ashton under Lyne. Do your research but its 30-45 mins into City centre depending what time you travel

Batmanwearspants · 18/03/2018 18:31

inspMorse Cheadle Heath is going up. We bought out 3 bed semi there last year for 255k

KellyanneConway · 18/03/2018 18:38

I would not recommend Trafford as there's a Grammar school system - the "good" (grammar) schools are selective and you need to be able to afford a tutor. My friend move to Sale just before her daughter started high school (she was incredibly bright but just hadn't been trained for the 11+) and had a nightmare finding a decent school for her - she ended up travelling way out of the area an hour's bus journey each way to school.
