Posting for traffic, sorry

What areas of Manchester are nice to live in? Minimum 3 bed, family style life

I'm in Chadderton (on the border of Rochdale/Oldham/Manchester). Houses are cheap, the area is really safe, there is greenery (I live on the edge of Tandle Hill country Park), and close to Manchester and Saddleworth. Trains and trams to Manchester, and you can get the train out to the pretty bits of Yorkshire like Todmorden and Hebden Bridge in about half an hour from Rochdale or Mills Hill. Royton, Shaw and Crompton are really nice too.

MoorMummy · 16/03/2018 22:42

Chorlton or Didsbury prices ridiculous, 300-400 for 3bed semis . I live in the Heatons in Stockport prices daft here too, no way would we be able to afford to buy here now.

chock good call on Chadderton! DH used to work at the Police station near Costco and I always thought there were some nice houses and it looked a nice area! Good for city centre too!

Ronnyhotdog · 16/03/2018 22:51

another vote for Royton/Shaw/chadderton area. I’m from round there, lots of green space, not too far from the city centre.

iklboo · 16/03/2018 23:07

Urmston. I love it here (moved from a very rough area). DS is very happy at school too.

Shinycat · 16/03/2018 23:08

Glossop!

Hale is a lovely village/town outside of Manchester.

Fuzzyduck0 · 16/03/2018 23:15

I definitely don't want hilly/rural like Glossop. I'll Google the places I haven't heard of, thank you all!

Stockport. My friend lives there and we live not too far away. It takes 8mins on the train to Pic and she just bought a 3 bed house for £130k next to a lovely park and a good school.

Ooh circle that House is just around the corner from me Grin

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/03/2018 23:27

How funny Alias we nearly bought around there. My friend loves that area of Stockport, we often think about moving there and cutting DHs commute down.

Aliasgrace1 · 16/03/2018 23:30

My kids go to the said school too, I presume you mean primary?

It is a lovely area, really good for motorway access and trains into Manchester. I've always lived around here

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/03/2018 23:35

Yes, the one next to the park?
I think it’s such an underrated area.

Yambabe · 16/03/2018 23:44

Irlam, Cadishead or Flixton might fit the bill too. Not too far out on the train/bus or by car, cheap housing, plenty of greenery around.

We are a little further out (Warrington) and there's some reasonable areas here too.

acquiesce · 16/03/2018 23:50

We live in between Prestwich and Heaton Park, lovely, really family friendly, house prices not too bad either.

x2boys · 17/03/2018 00:31

Bury is great there's some lovely. Areas my mum. And dad live in Greenmount near Ramsbotton, I live in a fairly rough part 9f Bolton but we do have nice areas, edgeworth ,Bradshaw , Horwich, Rivington etc .

KinkyAfro · 17/03/2018 06:48

Hale is definitely not cheap! Hi Iklboo whereabouts in Urmston are you? We're more Flixton side off Western Rd

missadasmith · 17/03/2018 07:45

I'd look more north on Manchester at an £150k budget for a 3 bed. There are nice areas on South Manchester but totally overpriced. You would need a lot more to afford a 3 bed there. Nice areas in the North and it's definitely cheaper there.

Aliasgrace1 · 17/03/2018 08:04

Circle yes that's the one. It's a great school, and the park is lovely.

Flockoftreegulls · 17/03/2018 08:14

Glossop, New Mills, Marple and Romiley are lovely but everyone I worked with who lived up there said the traffic was a nightmare. Don't do it and again NOT Levenshulme. I used to work there and it's awful.

missadasmith · 17/03/2018 08:17

Levenshulme actually has some really nice pockets but if you want something nice, it is really expensive these days. I have a couple of friends who bought in Levenshulme recently for more than £250k for a 3 bed terassed house.

Blushlove · 17/03/2018 08:20

Have a look at Swinton or around the Lancaster Rd area of Salford

InMySpareTime · 17/03/2018 08:31

Sale is good for schools, very suburban and on the trams 20 mins from the city centre, 3 beds are about 200k.
If you want a cheaper area and are less school-focused, Burnage is a good bet. Trains into the city are very regular, and there's a lot of 3 bed 1930s housing stock. You'd want to move away for secondary though, slim pickings there!

Beetlejizz · 17/03/2018 08:41

If your budget is 150k for a 3 bed, there is a great deal in Greater Manchester for that price and way below. None of it is in a naice area though, but plenty of objectively nice ones though not to general MN taste. Don't waste your time on Hale, Chorlton, Urmston or Didsbury. You can't afford it.

If you did want South Manchester on that budget, you're either looking at Wythenshawe (which to be fair is very green) or some of the poorer areas of Stockport. You'd need to ensure being close to a tram station in Wythenshawe or a train station in Stockport, otherwise the commute will be more like 1 hour 20. Stockport roads are appalling for commuting.

Your money will go considerably further if you'll go north or east of the city centre, but again make sure you're close to a tram or train station. Some areas of Greater Manchester have surprisingly shit train coverage and though there are buses, it will take much longer than 20 minutes. There are some very green areas of Bolton, and I think some of the train services are around 20 minutes. You could also look at the area around Mossley in Tameside? It's pretty countryside-ish. About 10 miles from the city centre and plenty there at the 150k mark.

Beetlejizz · 17/03/2018 08:43

I like Burnage but there are no 3 beds for 150k. Closer to 200k. It's because it's nestled inbetween Didsbury and the Heatons, so it's sort of getting picked off around the edges.
