My British husband and MIL insist that adding sugar to cereals (rice crispies/shredders/corn flakes) is a thing that everyone does. I have never heard of this before and although I’ve lived in several different places no one I know has ever done this!! AIBU to think if you’d like a sweet version of corn flakes you’d just go ahead and buy Frosties????

When I first met DH he used to take sugar on his Frosties!! When we were growing up (70s and 80s) we did have sugar on our cereals but thinking about it now that confuses me a bit as in so many other ways Mum was very strict about sugar/biscuits/chocolate. Our kids don’t take sugar on their cereals, and DH just has Frosties sans extra sugar these days. I haven’t had cereal for breakfast for ages and had some All Bran the other day - so sweet, what happened? The kids love going to stay at SIL’s as a) she’s fab and they live their cousins but b) she lets them have sugar on their breakfast Smile

Dark brown sugar and a chopped banana in porridge is the best. Sugar goes all melty.

We did as kids in the 70s and 80s.

I have a conniption if mine did it though! Enlightened times...

I hate sugar on morning cereal/muesli, if I eat sugar in the morning it makes me feel like sh*te for the whole morning. I guess it is common to add it but maybe not normal as our sugar consumption as a society is wrecking our health. I've noticed that children who eat sugary stuff get very picky about eating 'real' food--it just doesn't taste good to them any more.

Yes we had sugar on cereal and porridge (and a sprinkle on well buttered toast) when we were kids (in 70's). We don't eat a lot of cereal now and use dried fruit in porridge to sweeten it up now.

Still do have on some cereals - wetabix especially . Normal in my 70s household . Wouldn’t do it for DD though .
Also had the pop man . But very little in the way of junk food , ready meals , takeaways , sweets .

We grew up putting sugar on cereals like weetabix and cornflakes, however I have always chosen not to, not for any health kick but purely because a absolutely hate the gritty graininess of sugar, I do add fruit for sweetness though

WinstonlovesJulia1984 · 18/03/2018 12:30

I never do this. If I want sweetness I add fruit

bonbonours · 18/03/2018 13:23

Completely normal to me. Weetabix, cornflakes, rice crispies shreddies shredded wheat etc taste gross without sugar. I am amazed anyone eats them without. If I am dieting I have to put sweetner powder or a ton of banana or other fruit on it for it to be edible.
