My British husband and MIL insist that adding sugar to cereals (rice crispies/shredders/corn flakes) is a thing that everyone does. I have never heard of this before and although I’ve lived in several different places no one I know has ever done this!! AIBU to think if you’d like a sweet version of corn flakes you’d just go ahead and buy Frosties????

Plain cereals are minging, i can't eat them without a lot of sugar.

& whoever says fruit sweetens cereals.... not to my taste buds it doesn't!

Luckily i rarely have cereal Grin

laddylonglocks · 15/03/2018 14:24

This was standard when I was a child (early 90s) but since getting to adulthood and having to make sensible choices I don't bother. It does taste better with though!

Esker · 15/03/2018 15:44

Deviating from OP's original question... but on the subject of cereal may I recommend the divine feast that is crunchy nut cornflakes covered in cream? Currently a forbidden fruit as I am pregnant and have type 1 diabetes... but once this baby has arrived I will be be indulgingGrin

windchimesabotage · 15/03/2018 15:58

When ive bought tesco value cornflakes because ive run out of money, if i have any sugar left then I put sugar on them to try and make them taste better lol!! Would never do it in front of my children though because I dont want them to think its normal (my son has porridge every morning anyway I just buy the cornflakes for me and my husband) Cereal is usually pumped full of sugar anyway so adding sugar is certainly not something anyone should do every day I dont think.

MotherOfWurzel · 15/03/2018 16:03

Sugar on weetabix and rice crispies is delicious!

Grimbles · 15/03/2018 16:07

We used to have sugar sandwiches Shock

Makes my teeth itch to think of it now.

WashBasketsAreUs · 15/03/2018 16:26

We had sugar on cereal like Weetabix, corn flakes and rice crispies but not on Frosties. Rarely had coco pops but they didn't have sugar put on them. When we had porridge mum used to sprinkle sugar on and it used to make a crunchy topping- yum!
On a separate issue, Weetabix- cold milk or hot? (with sugar obvs!) My husband eats it with cold milk, bloody heathen.

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 16:33

Sugar sandwiches?! I was only just getting my head around chip sandwiches - I still don’t really understand if that means chips like from the chip shop or chips as in crisps (I’ve lived in the U.K. nearly 15 years but it still blows my mind).

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 16:34

Cold milk every time. Cereal has to be refreshing, except porridge which is supposed to be hearty and warming in the winter. Wink

You can have chips and crisps in a sandwich Grin

Crisp sandwiches are amazing!

reddressblueshoes · 15/03/2018 16:43

Grew up on Ireland in the eighties- I still put sugar on cornflakes and Rice Krispies, but never weetabix- weirdly, that's my 'healthy' cereal. While I had them every day as a child, nowadays I'd only have Rice Krispies or cornflakes as a weekend thing, or the occasional treat/snack- even without the added sugar, they're basically super processed carbs.

This may all be very illogical but it makes sense to me! Sugar on cereal was definitely a thing visiting friends houses as a child but I've no idea how many of them still do it.

KennDodd · 15/03/2018 18:58

I remember when I was a kid we did this. I would never do it now and my children have never seen this so don't do it. We do add honey or golden syrup to porridge though.

wakemeupbefore · 15/03/2018 19:24

YABU and your DH and DMIL even more UR for eating such crap in the first place.
[grumpy]

jarhead123 · 15/03/2018 19:29

As a kid, but not now no and I don't put it on my kids cereal either

WashBasketsAreUs · 15/03/2018 19:35

MadScientist never mind sugar sandwiches (We had them) but we also had condensed milk sandwiches! You had to put the tin in the fridge overnight otherwise it's too runny; white bread or fruit bread, butter then condensed milk smeared on then eat- quickly!
By the way you can now buy condensed milk in a squeeze tube like toothpaste, and you can buy proper "thick cream on the top " milk in Waitrose. Bloody lovely it is.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 15/03/2018 19:43

We always added sugar in the 80s/90s and I still do on corn flakes.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 15/03/2018 20:00

On weetabix definitely and I like so much sugar in readybrek that it makes a saturated solution and no longer dissolves so its crunchy!!

The rest of the cereals i can manage without extra sugar.

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 20:07

@wakemeupbefore if you think cereal (minus sugar I think we’ve established I’m not a fan) is eating crap what do you say to eating cake for breakfast some days? I love being an adult some days Grin

I’m sorry, condensed milk sandwiches?!?!?! How have I lived here so long and know so little.

I am however the same weirdo who has just made pancakes for dessert and eaten them totally plain - even the kids have them with blueberries - so I admit to maybe not being well placed to judge!

Kid from the seventies here too. The use of sugar on cereals was just ..well....normal!

I use honey now, and it is so much nicer and you still get that sugar "kick".

toolazytobakeacake · 15/03/2018 20:43

I don't like sugar on cereal, probably because my parents never had it and never told us it was an option, so I'm very used to not having it. DH used to add it but has stopped of his own accord over the years, although he will occasionally eat cereal that is already sugary (e.g. Frosties) in a hotel or somewhere where the choice is different from home.

I was aware that some adults like it, but I was shocked when DC were little and a woman I knew through the toddler circuit was telling a story about how her husband "forgot" to put sugar on her son's Shreddies and he didn't like them. Why would you start putting sugar on a toddler's cereal? They'd be just as happy with it as it is if they hadn't been encouraged to eat it with sugar from the start!

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2018 21:25

I remember this in my childhood in the 80s, but am surprised to hear that people still do it now. It's getting rarer and rarer to have sugar in tea as well and I'm always quite surprised when people ask for it. I'm no health freak and I like sugary stuff, but actually adding a spoonful of sugar to something...

Sprogletsmuvva · 15/03/2018 21:59

My tastes have definitely gone away from the sweet since I was young. I was hoping to bring DD up in my own (current) image. However, DP has a very sweet tooth (despite being 25 years older than me) and is also SAHP. Which means more sugar on/in DD’s food than I’d like... however, as Weetabix is one of the few iron-rich foods she’ eat, I’m not going to back-seat drive over it.

Oh, and granola is a fantastic food if you’re backpacking in the middle of nowhere. You can eat it conventionally, turn it into porridge, or have it straight from the packet as a snack / quick lunch. Not so great if your arse is parked in an office chair all day, though Sad.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 15/03/2018 22:50

I've just realised that DS has so far been deprived of the joy of a weetabix sugar crust! It was so common when I was I kid, I wouldn't have dreamed if not sugaring my cereal, yet now it wouldn't occur to me to add sugar - just shows how attitudes change. I'm not particularly anti sugar for DS either, he's allowed sugary yogurt, biscuits and we bake a lot etc.

LeighaJ · 15/03/2018 23:15

This is common where I grew up in the US, but usually only done by kids when their parents aren't looking.
