My British husband and MIL insist that adding sugar to cereals (rice crispies/shredders/corn flakes) is a thing that everyone does. I have never heard of this before and although I’ve lived in several different places no one I know has ever done this!! AIBU to think if you’d like a sweet version of corn flakes you’d just go ahead and buy Frosties????

I used to in the 80s. Was totally normal. There would always be a big jar of sugar on the table to pour all over your already sugary cereal. My grandma used to make porridge and then stir in a generous helping of condensed milk, which make it really thick and sugary like syrup.

I don't let DS do it though, and don't know anyone who still piles on the sugar.

SoundofSilence · 15/03/2018 12:36

I've always put sugar on my cereal (70s child). I tried to give it up, but cereal is just ghastly without it. I'm used to the crunch. I have reduced it to about half a teaspoon though, instead of the generous dessertspoonful I would have used as a child.

I never let on to the kids that sugar on cereal was a thing, so that they didn't get used to it (blatant hypocrisy, I know). However, DP blithely went ahead and introduced them to HIS family practice of pouring condensed milk over it instead. Neither of them will now eat cereal without 'Daddy's cream'. I could cheerfully throttle him.

Ginkypig · 15/03/2018 12:36

I did as a kid to rice crispies or corn flakes which I also had full fat (blue) with them too!

These days I don't really eat cereal and don't have blue milk in the house. If I were to though I'd have to get blue milk and I'd still want a tiny sprinkle of sugar [blue]

I had some Frosties recently when I was staying in a b&b and I'm not joking my teeth hurt because they were so sweet!

I will declare though that the best ever cereal ever to be created was frosted shreddies! Oh my goodness they were lovely.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/03/2018 12:38

I would put sugar on cornflakes and weetabix etc but not on muesli or the like.

One of our regular B&B guests was an American who would drench his cornflakes in orange juice instead of milk.

MarklahMarklah · 15/03/2018 12:38

I have a sweet tooth and as a child I added sugar to cereals. As a child, also, I had to have lots of fillings.
Reading the packaging, the majority of breakfast cereal products already contain sugar, so there is no need to add more.
I still eat sweet things, but try to not add to the existing sugar - so bran flakes without sugar but I might put a handful of raisins in.

Kikashi · 15/03/2018 12:39

Used to be normal in the 70's/80's. Wouldn't dream of it now. My mum even bought us Glucose powder to use instead for extra energy!! but then where I lived some kids had sugar sandwiches for tea or packed lunch.

My granny ( and mum) thought it was good for you - gave you energy. Her favourite remedy for illness was a lump of butter rolled in sugar.

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 12:40

Corona as in the Mexican beer?!

chandlersfraud · 15/03/2018 12:40

Ah yes, had totally forgotten about this. did this in my childhood (in 80s), remember that it was a point of discussion when breakfasting elsewhere whether you should put the sugar on before or after the milk (after obviously!)

possumgoddess · 15/03/2018 12:41

I grew up with sugar on cereals unless they were sugar-coated and don't like cereals without (which is why I don't eat cereals now - sweetener isn't the same), but my little nephews have never had sugar on their cereals and I don't give it to them when they come to stay with me. I really fancy porridge with golden syrup right now...... (I don't eat that now either...)

MegEmski · 15/03/2018 12:54

I put sugar in cornflakes, shreddies, rice krispies, weetabix. I wouldn't (obviously!) on anything sweet like crunchy nut, frosted cornflakes, anything like that

I had my rice krispies the other day without sugar....not the same :(

Jaygee61 · 15/03/2018 12:57

Don't add sugar to wetabix but do add honey to porridge.

mummyhaschangedhername · 15/03/2018 13:00

Depends on the cereal but yes, I tend to find most sweet already, but I certainly did this as a child.

MaximumVolume · 15/03/2018 13:02

Corona was pop from the milkman, @MadScientist10.

user1467662525 · 15/03/2018 13:06

If you read the ingredients in cereals, most have added sugar, unlike years ago.

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 15/03/2018 13:06

When we ran out of sugar my mum used to put golden syrup on my rice crispies. Oh I loved it when we ran out of sugar.

DextroDependant · 15/03/2018 13:09

We used to do this growing up bit I don't do it any more and have never done it for the DC.

O don't actually have sugar or sweetener on the house.

mintich · 15/03/2018 13:10

I add sugar to corn flakes and rice crispies

Hoobledoop · 15/03/2018 13:11

MadScientist No - Corona was a brand of fizzy drink in the UK. Haha imagine if there was a beer van, epic!

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 15/03/2018 13:11

Completely normal when I was growing up - as was having two heaped spoonfuls of sugar in every hot drink Shock Wouldn't ever do it now though - my taste buds have adjusted over the years.
My Dad would only ever eat Weetabix with butter spread on them - they're lovely (as long as it IS butter, not some horrible spread) and I like them as a snack occasionally - so does DD - and DGD. It's a family thing...Grin

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 13:28

@Hoobledoop I wanted to make sure just in case beer vans still existed Wink

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 15/03/2018 13:30

My dad likes cheddar cheese on fruit cake!

Our fizzy drinks delivery service was called Maine I think, not Corona. He came separately to the milkman. We were allowed full sugar fizzy drinks, but always had skimmed milk... Fat was the bad guy back then!

MadScientist10 · 15/03/2018 13:32

@soundofsilence remind me is condensed milk the sweet one or is that the evaporated milk?

OP posts:
SoundofSilence · 15/03/2018 13:35

MadScientist10 The sweet one.

Ohyesiam · 15/03/2018 13:39

British born and never put sugar on cereal.

Earlyup · 15/03/2018 13:43

Added sugar all my life until I had a kid. Never thought I'd get used to 'plain' Shreddies.
