My British husband and MIL insist that adding sugar to cereals (rice crispies/shredders/corn flakes) is a thing that everyone does. I have never heard of this before and although I’ve lived in several different places no one I know has ever done this!! AIBU to think if you’d like a sweet version of corn flakes you’d just go ahead and buy Frosties????

I still sneak sugar onto my cereal. I like the texture. The cornflakes I buy have no added sugar in them so I figure it's not too bad to sprinkle a bit on.

Kids don't get any though.

kateandme · 16/03/2018 08:04

cereal used to be our snack from school.we used to douse the stuff with sugar then get the sugary milk at the end.slirrrp...shreddies ,cornflakes,w.bix all had sugar.and its very different to frosted things.
also though I grew out of it.i would slowly have less naturally.parents made us aware we were overdoing it but they never pushed it otherwise I no we would have rebelled.whereas now I just like it better without so much.

Slartybartfast · 16/03/2018 08:09

sugar on sandwiches, lovely, you could get special multi coloured sugar, find Alpen though far too sweet now. shows how tastes have changed perhaps since in the 1970s it wasnt considered sweet.
i would have sugar on strawberries, cornflakes, shreddies, however my dsis would not

Slartybartfast · 16/03/2018 08:10

and yep to brown sugar on porridge

SoundofSilence · 16/03/2018 08:38

My dad used to love sugar sandwiches. He lost all his teeth...

ButchyRestingFace · 16/03/2018 08:41

My mama used to glucose - not sugar - my weetabix when I was little.

Wouldn’t sugar any breakfast cereals nor am I aware of it being a ‘thing’.

Osopolar · 16/03/2018 09:09

DGM used to give me Weetabix with sugar on and strawberries with sugar. My parents never did though so it was a rare treat. DS has never had sugar on cereal but is partial to Weetos so probably not much better. I console myself with the fact that he likes porridge plain Grin

whywontteenswearcoats · 16/03/2018 09:50

We never put sugar on cereal. Sometimes let the kids put a drizzle of golden syrup on their weetabix

WashBasketsAreUs · 16/03/2018 10:33

My kids were horrified when I told them about condensed milk sandwiches. They don't travel well in a lunchbox tho! They need to be made and eaten in one place. Really fancy one now!
Also we had tomato sauce sandwiches, and I think salad cream sandwiches? Always with white bread and proper butter. Those were the days!
Ooh and another one- tinned spaghetti or beans (hot not straight out the tin) bread and butter then made into a sandwich. The hot beans melts the butter and it drips down your chin!
I would like to say I'm a size 10, have been skinny all my life so it never did me any harm.

Soubriquet · 16/03/2018 10:44

I put sugar on my Frosties Blush

Zapdos · 16/03/2018 11:16

Child of the late '70s here. I used to get cold toast for breakfast, with a thick layer of butter on, ripped into pieces and dipped into sugar! Shock

I have never had sugar on cereal though. Although now I really fancy cornflakes with sugar on...

itsonlysubterfuge · 16/03/2018 11:36

I do this, but only to rice crispies, everything else I eat plain. I am American and this was a pretty normal thing for other children as well.

tomhazard · 16/03/2018 13:18

I did when I was a child but I wouldn't let my DC do this now!

Snobbles · 16/03/2018 13:29

I haven't eaten cereal since childhood but when I did it always had a teaspoon of sugar added.

MadScientist10 · 16/03/2018 13:34

Having this thread up has made me go out and buy a multi pack of cereal to try some of them out - it’s been years. I am not adding sugar to any in silent protest either DH (who I made the mistake of showing this thread to and now feels like he’s right).

Sgtmajormummy · 16/03/2018 13:37

I read somewhere that the amount of sugar in breakfast cereals has increased A LOT since the 70s. So there shouldn’t be any need for it now.

Personally I have porridge with full fat milk and chia seeds but no sugar. We get a variety pack of cereals once a year on holiday (and chuck the Cinnamon Whatsits every time, bleurgh!) but never add sugar.

DailyMailFail101 · 16/03/2018 14:10

It’s strange in the 80s and 90s I think it was the thing to do and most people did it, in this day and age with all the healthy eating advertising and the more people know about sugar it’s a very strange concept.

MySockIsWetAgain · 16/03/2018 14:17

OMG - all that time I spent in the cereal isle looking for cereal with the smallest possible amount of sugar... "DH! I found one with 9.4!! What do you have?" "I have 7.2!!" "Should we take yours?" "No wait let me check another couple..."

And there are people out there ADDING sugar to them??!! Shock

CadyHeron · 16/03/2018 14:17

This thread is making me want to vom! Love cereal, but sugar added to your bowl of cereal is absolutely vile.
Definitely was a thing when I was little,as I remember if I stayed anywhere and told them I didn't want sugar on, they'd forget and I get it anyway. Hmm
The pp who said about sugar on strawberries and apples?! Ew. Never heard of that. Just why? They're sweet enough!
Blee.

MadScientist10 · 16/03/2018 14:21

This multi pack has been relatively eye opening. There is boatloads of sugar...and salt!! Think my LOs might just be getting porridge for breakfast from now on, even the rice crispies have a crazy amount of salt all things considered.

Another 70's child here who likes a good sugar crust on a weetabix, and agree that ice cold full fat milk and sugar on cornflakes is divine. Another favourite is mashed banana with sugar sprinkled (ok ladled) on top. My mother thinks this is completely normal (hence my taste in sugar) and years ago produced a mashed banana for my DC when weaning saying to me that she had added "a couple of teaspoons of sugar in to make it sweet". She totally didn't get the problem.

I am however reasonable well educated and have never allowed my kids to add sugar to anything and we don't even own a sugar bowl. My own sugar consumption is totally illicit these days.

GUMBYMUMBY · 16/03/2018 15:29

I don't put sugar on cereal... I like wheat and rice flakes with yoghurt and banana.
No sugar... I don't ever use it really.I do eat chocolate though.

Pinkvoid · 16/03/2018 16:08

My DP acts like I’m torturing my DC not putting sugar on their cereal, even already sugary ones like coco pops! I wasn’t raised to add sugar. We put jam in porridge but that was it.

callmekitten · 16/03/2018 17:28

MMmmmmm! Sugar! Totally normal to me. And a bit off topic but - I grew up on a dairy farm and we ate cream on our cereal instead of milk. Fabulous!!

OhGood · 16/03/2018 17:56

Honey on oats porridge. Not loads, but some.
