This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

I should say I haven't actually watched Mum, but it is by the same bloke who wrote Him and Her - and that would aways get rave revues from the critics...I would watch it now and then and think it was just a bit too grim and grungy and not enough actual jokes to persuade me to watch it regularly.

As others have said, Damned is brilliant.

It is a total pile of shit.

BuzzKillington · 14/03/2018 20:51

Our son loves Mum, but it drives us a bit mad.

The main character is so insipid and a complete doormat. I can't bear simpering people like her.

The would-be boyfriend is very creepy.

The halfwit son, his moronic girlfriend and the brother are just too stupid to be believable.

The only one we love is Pauline. She is worth watching it for.

MikeUniformMike · 14/03/2018 20:54

Fleabag was brilliant.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 14/03/2018 21:01

Roger and Val have Just Got In. With alfred Molina and Dawn French. That was in a similar vein to Mum.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 21:05

BuzzKillington I think you might’ve hit the nail on the head there

“The main character is so insipid and a complete doormat. I can't bear simpering people like her.

The would-be boyfriend is very creepy.

The halfwit son, his moronic girlfriend and the brother are just too stupid to be believable”

I’d just add that the stuck up girlfriend would probably make up an excuse not to go to her house, as she seems to find it completely unbearable to be there.

MrsHathaway I’ve kust comeback on to say I’ve been watching Damned and it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen for ages.

sparklepops123 · 14/03/2018 21:07

Find " the middle" best ever

OliviaStabler · 14/03/2018 21:14

I think you'll find The Royale Family is GENIUS!

I think not.

IJustLostTheGame · 14/03/2018 21:18

Fleabag was brilliant.

I rewatched Goodnight Sweetheart the other day. Gary, what a total cheating nasty twat. Why the fuck was his character ever acceptable?????

Ginmakesitallok · 14/03/2018 21:21

Has anyone recommended Two doors down yet? Fabulous Scottish comedy

PastramiAndRye · 14/03/2018 21:22

I loved Mum. It's so subtle and understated.

I think people DO put up with awful members of their family to keep the peace.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 14/03/2018 21:24

OP are we watching the same thing? Mum is one of the best written things that’s been on TV in years.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 14/03/2018 21:26

Also if you didn’t cry at last nights episode you have no heart.

Ronnyhotdog · 14/03/2018 21:29

Mum is brilliant. I also love This Country & I binged watched Damed last week and enjoyed that.
Cuckoo, Man Down & Game Face are all hilarious.
American comedy - it’s always sunny is probably my favourite. I’ve been watching Life In Pieces and that has some real laugh out loud moments in it.

MikeUniformMike · 14/03/2018 21:36

The Royle Family was genius.

calzone · 14/03/2018 21:40

I’m really enjoying Mum.

Hold the sunset is good too but I do love Jason Watkins.....

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/03/2018 21:44

I want to watch the rest of Inside Number 9 . I Saw two and they crack me up. I love the timing and the different characters . The actors are so talented as are the writers. I like the anthology style and the mix of genres.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 21:48

I’ve just realised that no one has mentioned I’m Alan Partridge, surely one of the most laugh out loud funny BBC sitcoms ever Blush

Anyone looking for a good comedy, Back (Mitchell & Webb) from a few months ago was excellent. All on 4od.

I really liked the first series of Mum, but not finding this one as good. Same for This Country - still funny, but it's a bit 'second album syndrome'.

Itsnotanthrax · 14/03/2018 21:54

I love Mum.
I agree you need to watch from the beginning.
I love hating the SIL from hell. The characters are so well written imo.
I think there will be a happy ending and it will end up being a classic a la Gavin and Stacey.

MrsMaxwell · 14/03/2018 21:58

I love Mum it’s just THE BEST thing on TV.

The crap non romance.

The parents who bicker whilst doing loving things for each other and miss their dead son.

The ditzy girlfriend who is has a really abusive mother and the social climbing down SIL who is now reduced to being driven around in a KA 😂😂😂

It’s just genius and poingnant and first class acting so. YABU Grin

Inthedeepdarkwinter · 14/03/2018 22:09

A really underrated sitcom which is poignant and well acted but basically sad is 'Getting On' by Jo Brand and friends. It is set in a geriatric ward, and I just wept and wept at the last episode. It's about the mundane, the funny, everyday life as we age and as some of their patient die. The fussy posh consultant who wants everyone to participate in her stool chart research is hilarious.

Getting On is still on Netflix but hardly anyone I know has heard of it. Do watch it if you can.

Lottapianos · 14/03/2018 22:11

Inthedeep, I adore Getting On. It's brilliantly acted. The consultant is PERFECT. It's a real shame it wasn't seen by more people
