This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

I quite liked Mum in a slow sort of way. It wasn't a fits of tears comedy, more a wry smirk when you recognise the scenarios. She was a bit wet though.

Flowers I didn't get at all.

I hate Not Going Out and couldn't watch more than half an episode of the John Cleese one.

Twoweekcruise · 14/03/2018 22:17

There's just not enough good comedy on TV these days.
I love Mum, like others say it's subtle humour.
I also loved Camping, thought that was hilarious.
But imo, you need to go way back for great comedy and nothing beats Only Fools and Horses, DH and I watch it every week and we still laugh even though we've seen them all a million times!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 14/03/2018 22:19

Has anyone watched the 5 minute comedy that follows Mum. Think I may have actually snorted during episode 2.

Agree that Friday Night Dinner is hard to beat. Make sure you’ve watch it from the beginning.

FridgeCut · 14/03/2018 22:22

Someone mentioned Bliss, SM is a great Actor, Green Wing was epic. This is hideous, awww poor man is fucking over two families, isn't he charmingly crap? No, he is just a fucking cheaty mc cheaty fucker.

Love Mum, it's a grower not a show-er.

GiantHulkHands · 14/03/2018 22:22

I'm really enjoying Mum. Last week's episode had a beautifully moving scene when the sexist rude father of deceased Dave related to his wife that people in the garden were reminiscing about their son.

His face, the way he conveyed his sadness for the loss of his son just in that one moment, while his wife wasn't looking and was chatting away, aw man.

It isn't cartoonish or over the top, it doesn't have a laughter track (and there is nothing wrong with those in a sitcom); it's very good.

Team Mum over here Grin

falang · 14/03/2018 22:24

I watched 2 episodes of Mum but had to stop because of the son's girlfriend who was really annoying. I love Not Going Out. So corny, lots of good one liners. This Country is really really funny.

Taffeta · 14/03/2018 22:26

Love Mum. Subtle, superb acting, exquisitely cringe in parts, like many of the best comedies.

For those that love Catastrophe - if you’re a Sharon Horgan fan, try Free Agents - her & Stephen Mangan. One of my faves.

Also love love loved W1A

Coconuthusk · 14/03/2018 22:33

I hated Fleabag. I thought the main character was vile.

zukiecat · 14/03/2018 22:35

Never heard of Mum

Still Game is the best and funniest comedy programme ever

Grilledaubergines · 14/03/2018 22:38

Mum is fantastic, brilliantly written and done very touching moments in it.

Two doors down, also brilliant.

Derry Girls wasn’t for me. The main actress’ facial expressions were so overboard it distracted me from anything potentially worth a laugh.

glsgow107 · 14/03/2018 22:41

Two doors down is hilarious! Latest serious is on player Smile

Bloomed · 14/03/2018 22:42

Something from a few years back which I really enjoyed was Sensitive Skin. With Joanna Lumley.

RubyLennoxExists · 14/03/2018 22:43

But Mum doesn't simper OP and Buzz - she gets on with stuff and takes a serene view of the world around her. I like the relationship between her and Kelly, especially having seen how Kelly's mum is to Kelly.

LanaorAna2 · 14/03/2018 22:44

Mum's only got one joke. Poor Lesley Manville gives it all she's got, which is superb, but I suspect the script was simplified by the BBC - ie hammered into non-existence.

Poor Mum. Poor Us.

xcxxcx · 14/03/2018 22:46

Watched 4 episodes of Mum last night & really enjoyed it; the scenes between the DIL and her MIL are priceless. 'Mum' really has got an atrocious family... For a real twist she could do something really dramatic to get rid of the parasitic horrors ((please!!)

I also loved Him & Her...

Loved the Jack Dee 'moving to the countryside' show. Favourite character was the father in law and the unpleasant shopkeeper...

Has anyone seen the show with two Irish teenagers who impersonating mate local thug, nick bikes and generally get into a mess - really funny. Can't remember what it was called!

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 14/03/2018 22:47

Yes
The grotesque characters suddenly reveal glimpses of something else underneath...

I love Mum - like a pp I wish it wouldn’t end.
Definitely given up on Hold the Sunset - it’s got even worse as it’s gone on.
Bliss I’m still watching - by a thread - even tho it stresses me out. Might delete the series link after tonight as last week’s was definitely the worst.
Agree with (only one?) pp We all love The Middle in our house - fab family viewing repeated constantly on Comedy Central. We also loved Mom. Scrubs is currently re-running and I now have 46 episodes stacked up Confused but we’re loving that.

OliviaStabler · 14/03/2018 22:52

The Royle Family was genius

It was shit.

babyinthacorner · 14/03/2018 22:54

I knew this was going to be about Mum... I love it! My friend recommended it to me when I was off sick and I watched the whole of series 1 within 2 days. Just finished watching again with DH and even he loved it, and he's hard to please.
Series 1 episode 1 was just perfection- funny and heartbreaking. Lesley Manville is EXQUISITE. Best comedy/drama I've watched for ages.

Hotfootit · 14/03/2018 22:58

The Young Offenders - bbc3, iplayer. Very, very funny!

Ilovetea33 · 14/03/2018 23:09

I watched the repeat of the first two episodes, but much as I wanted to see Peter Mullen in a likeable role, I just couldn't get into it. I don't know anybody like this and there are so many other series I want to watch - I just felt I was wasting my time.

Jux · 14/03/2018 23:12

I love 'Mum'.

userlotsanumbers · 14/03/2018 23:16

Another vote for Derry Girls if you've time on your hands and don't like 'Mum'. Hilarious.

ToffeeUp · 15/03/2018 07:56

xcxxcx ; Jock and Connor from The Young Offenders

There is also a film which is just as funny.

Lottapianos · 15/03/2018 07:57

Had totally forgotten about Flowers. I loved it so much. One to seek out if you like your comedy very dark
