This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

I have grown to love it. It's very gentle and I know people like all of them.
I find her and Michaels struggle almost too painful to watch though.

I also adored Derry girls and young offenders.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 15/03/2018 17:41

Go and watch May to December on YouTube

Fightthebear · 15/03/2018 17:41

I agree gezza.

His character’s painful, courageous struggling to express himself in such absurd circumstances and retain dignity in the face of being crushed.

So well portrayed.

Mmmmmmmchips · 15/03/2018 17:42

I absolutely loathe Mrs Browns Boys. It’s not funny in the slightest. Actually gives me rage 🤬

rachaelclaire1 · 15/03/2018 17:42

Mum is brilliant !!

Fightthebear · 15/03/2018 17:43

Personally I think Mum is a very relatable portrayal of female experience. There’s a lot there I recognise.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/03/2018 17:45

Me too...

  • she is like my sister (but I'm not like the sister in law)

The son is so like so many people- I laugh when er he speaks!

Yes peter mullan is great. What an expressive face.

Mummadeeze · 15/03/2018 17:48

I love everything about Mum and savour every minute of it. I laugh out loud a lot and would put it up there with some of my favourite comedies ever. Am so surprised that some of you don't get it or find it funny. The writer is a genius!

TheRebel · 15/03/2018 17:48

Mum is an unusual brilliantly written sitcom but due to its depth and subtlety I can see it won’t appeal to most. If you’ve watched it from the very start it makes much more sense too.*

Well I am shallow and very very stupid so maybe I should stick Teletubbies instead Hmm

I totally get the melancholy and subtlety. Just because I don't much like the programme doesn't mean I don't understand it.

The acting's great - I just find it too cliched.

nakedscientist · 15/03/2018 17:51

My ‘don’t get it’ is Seinfeld. Only ever liked one US comedy and that’s MASH.
Love Fr Ted and the IT crowd.
Adore Mum

Chickinlikin · 15/03/2018 17:58

It's written by the same guy who did Him and Her, which was very funny and sweet, although a bit weird in places. I kind of like it but if I was "mum" I would have gone on the rampage by now and slapped them all - the other characters are so annoying but I think that's the point.

HectorlovesKiki · 15/03/2018 18:02

Gotta say, I love it!
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Hope you get better soon.
Look after yourself.

Peartree17 · 15/03/2018 18:02

I loved Rev, (everything was just brilliant) Motherland and ....the one with Phoebe Waller Thingy...called Slapper or Minger or something like that. The Beeb is still putting good new comedy out.

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/03/2018 18:05

Never even heard of it and don't like 'not going out'. But then I don't like many comedies to be honest. I can put up with Mrs Brown or whatever its called, at a push and I really can't stomach the American sit coms either canned laughter. Maybe I'm just a boring old fart!

Peartree17 · 15/03/2018 18:06

Fleabag! that's what it was called!

mummaCL · 15/03/2018 18:08

Love Mum, can’t get on with Hold the Sunset

Purplealienpuke · 15/03/2018 18:09

I really enjoy Mum. The anticipation of whether she'll get together with Peter Mullens character (brilliant actor) and the quiet way she puts up with the comings and goings of her boorish SIL and parents in law is genius.
I box setted Young Offenders the other day... really made me laugh out loud!
I couldn't stand Derek .... wtf was Ricky Gervais thinking?
My favourite thing ever was definitely Father Ted. It still makes me belly laugh 😂

MCamp10 · 15/03/2018 18:12

Astonished at the negative comments on “Mum”! I think it’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. Skilfully written, finely drawn characters, excellent actors, well directed and poignant as well as funny! The facial expressions are just brilliant and the emotion is real and understated rather than obvious and slapstick. Lesley Manville is superlative as always and she is supported by a great cast. It has shades of “Friday Night Dinner” and “The Royle Family” both of which were examples of brilliant observational comedy!

MillieMoon94 · 15/03/2018 18:12

Mum is quite brilliant, it seems to get better with every new episode. Its beauty lies in what isn't said as much as what is. It's not laugh out loud hilarious most of the time, but it's subtle and quite beautiful.
Michael's performance in the latest episode was sublime, and the scene with Cathy's in-laws in the previous episode was so bittersweet and a perfect portrayal of the personal struggle of grief.
I am not at all having a go at you OP, everyone is entitled to their opinion, we will just have to agree to differ on this one.

SimonBridges · 15/03/2018 18:12

I love Mum.
It’s not laugh-out-loud funny.
You need to have watched it from the beginning to make sense.

I wouldn’t say it is a sitcom. More of a drama with laughs.

Peartree17 · 15/03/2018 18:14

And if we're casting our nets wider, Frasier has still got be tops. I liked Friday Night Dinner, but I think pretty much every ensemble comedy just shows up how far and away better than everything else Frasier was - and still is.

Loonoon · 15/03/2018 18:21

I love Mum but Lesley Manville's (Cathy?) character infuriates me. She should pull up her big girl pants.

I also like Not Going Out and Two Doors Down but the comedy of the decade has to be Derry Girls.

S0upertrooper · 15/03/2018 18:22

Just watched The Young Offenders. Genius!!! Thanks for the top tip!
