This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

StupideSaucisse I must be so boring! I don't like any you've listed, Good or the bad!

thesockgap · 15/03/2018 22:10

I really like Mum. I agree it's a mistake to look at it as a sitcom. It's not usually laugh out loud funny (although I do laugh a lot at her foul mouthed PILs) but more gentle humour. I have to admit I can't stand Jason and Kelly as they are infuriating, but I love the other characters!
I agree with PPs who have mentioned Two Doors Down - my favourite comedy of recent years! Honourable mentions too for Motherland, Coupling and Catastrophe,

Helmetbymidnight · 15/03/2018 22:15

Yes, that Easter episode of rev was extraordinary.
I worried that being called rev and being set in a church would put people off. Grin as a committed atheist, it almost did put me off. But- it's themes were so universal, it's insights so true and the rev himself so likeable...aww, I was a big fan.

Dh and I enjoy arguing over who's the most irritating in 'mum'
I say:
Fil
Sil
dil (Kelly)

He says:
Sil
Bil
Kelly

Helmetbymidnight · 15/03/2018 22:17

Ooh I've not heard of two doors down or this country. Will look out for those, thank ye.

Taffeta · 15/03/2018 22:31

Tried This Country.

Not a patch on Mum!

MotherOfWurzel · 15/03/2018 22:44

I'm going to try Rev and Two Doors Down

TheMrsDepp · 15/03/2018 22:45

I really enjoy Mum, it’s beautifully written and acted, very subtle.
Not Going Out is utterly dire, always has been.
My absolute favourite is This Country. Completely hilarious. Genius!

Thinkingofausername1 · 15/03/2018 22:47

Ha I'm glad I didn't watch it then.
I've been watching collateral and keeping the faith. Not comedy but keep you wanting to watch the next episode Smile

SimonBridges · 15/03/2018 22:52

I'm just starting to watch Mum but it only starts from episode 4 on iplayer. I like it. Good acting.
Who is Michael? In fact, who is everyone?

It’s a shame not to watch from the start.

Micheal - Cathy’s husbands best friend. Unspoken love between him and Cathy is the mainstay of the story
Cathy - recently widowed.
Jason (I think) - son
Kelly - lovely but feckless girlfriend, moves in.
Nan and Grandad - Cathy’s in laws
Derek - Cathy’s brother
Pauline - his partner.
Kelly’s mum - very unpleasant woman who always runs Kelly down.

leccybill · 15/03/2018 22:56

Thanks Simon!
I'd like you have watched from the start but it's not available.

MillieMoon94 · 15/03/2018 23:56

@TheRebel yep absolutely down to personal taste, but I like that we all view different programmes in different ways, how boring life would be if we all thought the same!

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 16/03/2018 00:37

I had a feeling this would be about Mum! I live in the area it's set so gave it a go hut didn't laugh much :/

Tartyflette · 16/03/2018 01:04

I've tried to like Mum but it's been a struggle.... I find it hard to empathise with any of the main characters.
But Damned is shaping up to be really good -- this week's episode was very sobering as well as funny. I also liked Jo Brand's earlier comedy Getting On.
And I thought Derry Girls was wonderful -- particularly the final episode.

Tartyflette · 16/03/2018 01:17

W.R.T. 'Damned' I think I might start a Nitin (or rather Nye-tin) fan club. He's an irritating shit but his heart's in the right place.
A Ch4 series that I liked a lot a couple of years ago, 2016 I think, was Not Safe For Work with Zawe Ashton (also great in Fresh Meat) about a government dept relocated to some godawful industrial estate far from London. A dramedy but very touching in parts and an (in)decent amount of Unresolved Sexual Tension too.

Ineke · 16/03/2018 02:42

Derry Girls, Catastrophe, Young Offenders, The Detectorists, Motherland, to name a few comedies that cheer me up. Mum is good but not in my opinion a laugh a minute. Touching and well acted though.

Yogafanatic · 16/03/2018 05:38

I persevered with a few episodes of ‘Mum’ but it just makes me feel really uncomfortable. It is so depressing and the situation is everyone’s worse domestic nightmare. It is so toxic🤮

84CharingCrossRoad · 16/03/2018 09:44

I love As Time Goes By.....

84CharingCrossRoad · 16/03/2018 09:47

Won't watch On the Buses and Rising Damp. Sexist and Racist rubbish....... Angry

Yogafanatic · 16/03/2018 10:41

84CharingCrossRoad
I love As Time Goes By too. I Watch the re-runs on Sky!

manicmij · 16/03/2018 11:05

Mum I enjoy, the son's girlfriend really is typical of a lot of young females, can't see past themself, same with the son. Brother and his girlfriend take a swipe at how folk like to think of themselves as better than others. Mum hasn't yet got to terms with loss of husband. Waiting on her rising up and telling them all how she views them all. A lot of showing human nature in the series. Great. Not going out - not keen on at all.

CaptainCardamom · 16/03/2018 11:44

Yes Kelly is exaggerated but that kind of clueless young person is a real thing - just watch Big Brother or similar (not that I do any more..)

But, she's complex too, there was a moment in this series where she suddenly realised she might hurt Cathy's feelings and reined it in, and she and Cathy do love each other. IMO she's too young and inexperienced to realise it but Cathy as a mother figure is what she actually loves about Jason.

Bloomed · 16/03/2018 11:48

I used to watch as time goes by with my grandmother and still go back to it when I need comfort.

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 16/03/2018 11:51

Interesting -captain- yes I see what you're saying , so many nuances - like reading a book rather than just blankly watching entertainment isn't it - there's bits to pick up on and share observations about these characters.

Kelly is vulnerable - I do think the actress conveys what the script is asking very well.

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 16/03/2018 13:19

Basically everyone is in love with Cathy, Kelly included.

For each of them I guess she has what they lack.

WereThereAnySexualProblems · 16/03/2018 13:26

I love 'mum'! The sister in law character is just brilliant! My all time favourites though are League of Gentleman, Phoenix Nights and 80's classic 'Dear John'...
