This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

Men behaving badly - pile of misogynistic wank.

Cherryburn · 15/03/2018 19:59

I think Mum is utterly brilliant. Hadn't heard anything about it but started watching the repeats of Series 1 by accident after Newsnight and was hooked! Told DH about it and watched all episodes again with him. He's hooked too (and he's not easily pleased). Really reminds me of The Royle Family.

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/03/2018 20:00

Well, after reading the posts about a mum on here I thought I'd have a look. On the 3rd episode, but Sky only start from episode 4! Well, dh and I are watching it, to be honest it's so stupid we're having to watch it to see if it gets any worse or better. its mildly amusing dh says. Imo the only sane one is the mum so far. The rest are so thick!

Helmetbymidnight · 15/03/2018 20:00

You do have to sort of give some comedies time to bed in- it can take a while to get used to the characters and the dynamics. Often they don't hit their stride til a few episodes in.

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/03/2018 20:00

About * 'Mum' not a mum!

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/03/2018 20:01

Helmetbymidnight that's what I think too so am persevering

Rewn7 · 15/03/2018 20:04

If it’s not been said already... download “Outnumbered” from the beginning. Now that’s a funny family sitcom Grin

MrsHathaway · 15/03/2018 20:08

Rev was beautiful. The Passion/Easter episode was pure brilliance.

TheRebel · 15/03/2018 20:09

Rewn7 Yes, I really liked Outnumbered, I’m pretty sure that was the catalyst for DH wanting children Grin it’s just a shame they had to grow up!

Mum is brilliant. Gentle humour and so well acted. I love it.

ArtieMae · 15/03/2018 20:11

Just discovered the sitcom ‘Two Doors Down’ about a group of neighbours and it’s hilarious. Great cast and well observed realistic characters. I agree with others that ‘Not Going Out’ is unfunny and cringe but have to say Lee Mack is a comic genius on ‘Would I Lie to you’. My favourite show.

peachgreen · 15/03/2018 20:15

I'm so glad people mentioned Detectorists - what a lovely, gentle, moving comedy. And so beautiful.

SukiTheDog · 15/03/2018 20:19

Anyone watched the mockumentary “This Country”? My son watches it and really laughs his head off. He’s 17 and has autism so, has a quirky sense of humour. I’m warming to it.

TheWickerWoman · 15/03/2018 20:22

I love Mum. I don’t think it’s supposed to be laugh out loud funny, it’s subtle and and a bit uncomfortable (which I love) same as The Office.

Also loving This Country at the moment, that does make me laugh more.

SukiTheDog · 15/03/2018 20:24

Love Two Doors Down! Brilliantly done. Love Arabella Weir 😊

Darkstarrheart · 15/03/2018 20:31

Check out The IT Crowd on Netflix really funny! Grin

isadorable · 15/03/2018 20:54

Mum is wonderfully written, observed and acted. Wry humour, not sitcom style laughs.

StupideSaucisse · 15/03/2018 21:14

Not watched Mum yet, but will give it a go on the back of this thread (as well as many others)

My faves are:
Alan Partridge
Bottom
Red Dwarf (up to series 8, but think they ought to have left it there personally)
IT Crowd
Man Down
Friday Night Dinner
Father Ted
Only Fools and Horses
A League of Gentlemen
Mr Bean
Vicar of Dibley

Worst:
Miranda (I just don't get it, it's not funny)
Not Going Out (I like Lee Mack but christ almighty, this is just bloody awful)
Monty Python (I can't stand John Cleese)
Plebs (Gooood what is this tripe?!)

Best American comedies definitely Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond for me.

Worst American comedies - sorry but, The Big Bang Theory, and it's rip-off with Stephen Fry, The Great Indoors (So cringeworthingly bad)

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/03/2018 21:21

I loved outnumbered!

leccybill · 15/03/2018 21:36

I liked Josh. Sitcom with Josh Widdicombe and Jack Dee. Made me laugh.

dementedma · 15/03/2018 21:39

don't get the love for Lee Mack. Smug, grinning tosser who appears on every game show or panel show going.

like7 · 15/03/2018 21:40

I really love 'mum'. I watched it on catch up after someone recommended it and just went through the lot quickly as so enjoyed it. Now watching the second series live. This week's was so touching - brilliant acting. Do want things to 'move along' now though!

SB1808 · 15/03/2018 21:41

I think Mum is absolutely brilliant. I laughed out loud at last weeks episode.

leccybill · 15/03/2018 21:58

I'm just starting to watch Mum but it only starts from episode 4 on iplayer. I like it. Good acting.
Who is Michael? In fact, who is everyone?

Slartybartfast · 15/03/2018 22:06

Michael is her deceased husband oldest friend, played by Peter Mulham or something
