To find the term 'child free' annoying?

Why not just say you don't want kids? Why do people have to make it sound like some dietary requirement? It's as if they see small humans as some kind of allergen or digestive irritation to be avoided.

OP, you need to have a serious think about why a term chosen by other people is getting to you so much...

stuffstuffeverywhere · 14/03/2018 12:59

A mate has started spouting this, that's why. Read the OP.

With every post you're sounding even more ridiculous.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 14/03/2018 13:00

You seem very angry and sweary about this.

Are you one of those people who thinks the whole world revolves around their babies by any chance?

I do a mild eyebrow lift when someone describes themselves as a full time Mum. But not enough to get sweary and stompy about it.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 14/03/2018 13:01

Would you like to suggest an alternative you like for my coeliac students? I'm sure they'd not want to offend you with their wanky bollock words.

reddressblueshoes · 14/03/2018 13:01

"I don't have kids'" is followed in many people's mind with 'yet'.

Childfree suggests you don't and are never going to have children. Childless makes it sound as though you are missing something.

I don't understand why it's hard. People
Have been talking about how it's the less offensive terminology to use for years. You sound v aggressive and quite lacking in empathy.

I've found that these 'child free' people are often also 'gluten free' and 'dairy free' for no medical reason, other than " it's healthier " or " more natural ". Possible also wibbling on about paleo-bollocks or clean eating. Or they only want 'positive people' in their lives.
This reads as both a stupid generalisation and a nasty little dig at people who've chosen not to have children.

Thursdaydreaming · 14/03/2018 13:03

It's a term meaning people chose not to have children and/or are happy without them, a play on and in contrast to the term "childless".

Hth.

I guess people don't normally say they are scorpion free or sweet corn free is that scorpions and sweet corn aren't really a big part of most people's lives or society as a whole. That seems pretty obvious.

Monkeybunkey · 14/03/2018 13:04

I'm child-free (by choice) and enjoy 10 pints of lager and a kebab from time to time. I can assure you I've never had a chia-seed and turmeric, dairy-free latte with carob sprinkles, nor would I want one!

VladmirsPoutine · 14/03/2018 13:04

And apparently all these 'child free' people are often also:

'gluten free' and 'dairy free' for no medical reason, other than " it's healthier " or " more natural ". Possible also wibbling on about paleo-bollocks or clean eating. Or they only want 'positive people' in their lives.

Care to continue offending an entire demographic of people?

Lottapianos · 14/03/2018 13:04

"I don't have kids'" is followed in many people's mind with 'yet'.

Spot on. If saying 'childfree' deflects any of this intrusive, potentially upsetting crap, then crack on I say

OP, are you possibly a teeny bit jealous of your 'childfree' friend? Your comment about lie-ins is very telling

CanIBuffalo · 14/03/2018 13:05

Hmm.
Lots of people have given good explanations about why the phrase is useful.
It irritates me somewhat but then I have a fucking words with myself about that.

Teacuphiccup · 14/03/2018 13:06

I agree with reddress
‘I haven’t got kids’ sound like you haven’t had kids yet rather than you’ve made the decision (or had the decision made for you) not to have kids full stop.

I like it because it sounds like a choice rather than a deficit.

VladmirsPoutine · 14/03/2018 13:06

^It's just so superior and smug, "I'm not adding to the burden on the planet and I get a lie in while I write the next, world class literary novel".
Hope you choke on your chia-seed and turmeric, dairy-free latte with carob sprinkles.^

Now you're surely just goading. Pathetic.

treeofhearts · 14/03/2018 13:06

They ARE an irritation to be avoided...

ThymeLord · 14/03/2018 13:06

I like it. Child-less implies deprived. Not everyone wants or decides to have kids. Childfree is a better way to describe this as a valid choice and lifestyle rather than a disappointment

Well put. I very much agree with you.

whiskyowl · 14/03/2018 13:06

"Child free" is a positive term that covers both personal choice not to have children and those who can't have them.

"Child-less" and to a lesser extent "I don't have children" are both negative definitions, that suggest (albeit faintly) that having children is the default, normative state, and that other choices are fundamentally a lack.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 14/03/2018 13:06

Well going gluten free or dairy free for no reason, is fairly wanky.

As is describing small human beings as something unpleasant to avoid, that's basically what the term 'child free' implies.

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 14/03/2018 13:06

If people want to use that term, then it's up to them. It can be a valid choice. Why so many people opt to have children when they can be so troublesome and expensive is a mystery we must put down to hormones over logic.

Teacuphiccup · 14/03/2018 13:07

Op it sounds like you need a rest, this is slightly unhinged.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/03/2018 13:08

the free bit sounds good to me. they are erm, a little restricting. sometimes.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 14/03/2018 13:08

I'm am child free (not that I would use that phrase) but I am also in that great no mans lan of being step-parent so I am child free, and not child free all at once. I'm also veggie so I presume I would really grind your gears Op!

Andto your last point- small children are quite often grubby beings and to be avoided! Snot, sick, puke, tantrums- no thanks!

MarthaArthur · 14/03/2018 13:08

Op sounds very upset someone has made a valid choice o not have kids and is using a lot of anger at their harmless accuratw turn of phrase. I am child free. I have never eaten anyrhing that sounds like that. However my friends small baby has followed me to the toilet on occassion. Is annoying poor parents Grin

Idontdowindows · 14/03/2018 13:08

I'd go and have a lie down OP, you seem to be tired and in need of a nap. And lay off the sugar.
