“This wasn't a sex stereotype slogan....”

Yes, I think we’ve established that.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 16:22

Okay

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 16:22

Should we stand around in awkward silence now?

SnibbleAgain · 16/03/2018 16:53

I could sing?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 16:55

Will it be a song from Annie?

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/03/2018 17:01

We could start celebrating St. Patrick's Day early.GrinGrinGrin

Or would that offend atheists?Confused

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 17:03

I invented the principle that it’s not a good idea for girls - or boys , for that matter - have sex stereotyped slogans on their clothes? I don’t think I did!

You invented the idea that THIS (nonexistant) (non) slogan was an example of THAT.
It isn't a slogan, it isn't a sex stereotype, it isn't clothes.

Are you that terminally unable to admit to being wrong?

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 17:04

Dione its the atheists that do most of the celebrating!

Why don't we have any shamrock or pint or snakes or harp emojis, anyway? Now there is an issue! I call racism against the Irish posters, I'm mortally offended I tell ya!

I'm not that familiar with Annie it used to irritate me as a child, I'm not much of a musical person although I did enjoy the book or mormon :D

I'm currently on an 80s kick I could have a bash at "Gloria" for you, might help the mood?

AlexanderHamilton · 16/03/2018 17:18

Snibble - when Dd was 14 I bought her a t shirt with Hasa Diga Eebowai on.

Samantha77hat · 16/03/2018 18:53

You know, with this sort of stupidity, we’ll soon end up with culture and anything fun grinding to a halt

And in the meantime hardcore pornography is literally everywhere and becoming increasingly acceptable and is actually quite harmful

SnibbleAgain · 16/03/2018 19:09

Grin alexander

SnibbleAgain · 16/03/2018 19:09

You won't find any argument from me on the hardcore porn thing, samantha

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 19:23

Me neither. There are quite a lot of things that I feel very strongly, less strongly/a bit strongly about. Porn is at the very strongly end of the scale.

It’s the people who roll their eyes and say ‘get a life, stop clutching your pearls, you’re such a snowflake’ that I actually find the most bizarre in all this. Most people that are interested in discussing the messages that young girls and boys are exposed to and the effect these might have, can do so quite rationally and calmly, it doesn’t mean they’re miserable or offended about everything, just that they think it worth thinking about these things. I see slogans I don’t like on T-shirts when I’m shopping for my daughter quite often, I don’t wring my hands and pass out in the shop, I just have a momentary thought that whilst only a tiny part of the overall picture, it’s nonetheless not a message I want my daughter growing up thinking is normal, and move on. This particular example is borderline for me, I wouldn’t buy it, but wouldn’t lose sleep over it either- I get it doesn’t even exist but the debate is surely still relevant because there are loads of much worse examples out there that the OP could have picked. It just seems sad we can’t even debate stuff like this without the snowflake line coming out.

Luckyme2 · 17/03/2018 14:49

I agree with you actually rosegoldeagle. Objections to that t shirt on this thread appear to include

  • It sends the wrong message to girls that they have to be girly and smile all the time
  • It could encourage men to start up a conversation with a young girl
  • You might be going through a bad time and not want to see t shirts with Smile on them
  • You wouldn't find this on a boy's t shirt I disagree with all of them and just saw it as a line from a musical but it's been an interesting debate. At the end of it all though we still don't know why the OP found it so wtf! 😂

Didn't read the thread did you? Most of us ARE interested in discussing that, but not when the example of what to be offended by a) DOES NOT EXIST and b) DOESN'T SAY WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT DID.

Not sure how many times the same thing can be said.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 17/03/2018 15:31

that exactly!

BertrandRussell · 17/03/2018 16:30

“Didn't read the thread did you? Most of us ARE interested in discussing that, but not when the example of what to be offended by a) DOES NOT EXIST and b) DOESN'T SAY WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT DID.“

Well, the T shirt does actually say what I thought it did. It’s not a high street t shirt for girls, but it certainly says what I thought it does. The fact that it’s a line from a song ( I didn’t know that) doesn’t detract from the fact that, if it had been on a little girl's T shirt it would have been yet another in a long line of stereotyping slogans sold to girls. Unless it came with footnotes. “*Please note that the above slogan is a line from a popular musical, and should in no way be taken as an exhortation for girls/women to be smilingly accommodating and people pleasing. Unlike many similar slogans, which perpetuate unacceptable gender stereotypes, and are not exempted by virtue of being quotations”

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 17/03/2018 16:33

you will never convince the professionally offended who see sexists attack in the most random nothing.

CompleteAisling · 17/03/2018 16:35

No it didn't say what you thought it did (had it existed, which it did not). It is NOT a stereotyping slogan, its a song lyric. Which you admit you didn't know, but still think you are right!
The arrogance is astonishing. It must be nice to be you, never ever wrong.

Luckyme2 · 17/03/2018 16:38

How is it an example of gender stereotyping though (assuming the t shirt existed) if it also appears on a boy's t shirt?

CompleteAisling · 17/03/2018 16:39

It's not. (but Bert et al can't admit they got it wrong)

BertrandRussell · 17/03/2018 17:01

I have said about 50 times (slight exaggeration) that the shirt the OP posted about isn’t real, and I didn’t recognize the slogan as a line from a song. Not sure what else you want me to “admit” I got wrong!
