The Annie one from next is a boys T-shirt.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/03/2018 06:49

Quite chameleon

kateandme · 16/03/2018 08:00

I think its a lovely message

MyFavouriteChameleon · 16/03/2018 10:08

OP : ffs!!!
Others: what? Why? Are you saying its offensive to women, why?
Others 2: seems harmless, happy song from musical.
Others 3: its a boys t shirt anyway actually.
OPs supporters:
It could have been a girls t shirt though, and THEN it would have been offensive, honest...
And best of all:
If some people can’t see why this offends others, I can’t be arsed to explain it to you!

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 10:19

The OP, I think has posted twice on this thread. And rather bizarrely, so probably best ignored. Lots of other interesting stuff, though, if you sift through the mockery and abuse!

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 10:22

Not very interesting really. It could be, if it hinged on an actual point, but it didn't.
There was lots of rudeness about how people didn't understand and who were professionally unoffended because they weren't bothered about A TSHIRT THAT DOESN'T EXIST AND DOESN'T SAY WHAT THEY THOUGHT IT DID EVEN IF IT DID EXIST!

Ready to apologise for that yet, Bert?

FairiesVsPixies · 16/03/2018 10:30

I saw one in the boys section of m&co that had SUPERIOR plastered over the front of it. Found it offensive on quite a few levels.

Can I ask why?

DioneTheDiabolist · 16/03/2018 10:42

That Disney sweater.Shock You couldn't wear that in parts of RoI without raising eyebrows or titters.Grin

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 10:48

“Ready to apologise for that yet, Bert?”

Happy to apologise if I’ve been rude. Could you just point me to the posts you want me to apologize for?

pollymere · 16/03/2018 11:01

The song promotes the idea that you don't need fancy labels to look good, just your own natural beauty. I think it's a great message for a t shirt. Well done Next.

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 11:01

You sneerily called people professionally unoffended for not being bothered about a non existent product bearing a message that it didn't even if it existed. Which it didn't.
If I'd said that, I'd be quite embarassed and issue a "my bad".

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 11:20

I have already said that “professionally unoffended”was a bit rude.

Are you asking all the people who called others “terminally offended” “pearl clutchers” “hand wringers””ridiculous””professionally offended””miserable joy suckers” “easily triggered” and urged them to “get a fucking grip” and all before my first post to apologise too?

manicmij · 16/03/2018 11:21

Don't buy it/wear it if you don't like it. I would buy it but not offended by it.

curlilox · 16/03/2018 11:31

You don't know what is happening in other people's lives. Sometimes people have a good reason not to smile. My husband had a massive heart attack last year and took a long time to recover (left with some brain damage as he stopped breathing ). I didn't feel much like smiling at the time, nor did I when he was sent home from hospital infected with clostridium difficile and I had to clean up him, the bathroom and his clothes several times a day. The way I felt then seeing a t-shirt like that might have been the last straw that made me break down in public.

Willow2017 · 16/03/2018 11:51

The t shirt doesnt quote any more of the dong though does it?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 11:52

They would have to pay royalties if it did.

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 11:56

some of them probably should as well, but its more on you when you are arguing from not even a flimsy position, a none existant one!

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 12:22

“some of them probably should as well, but its more on you when you are arguing from not even a flimsy position, a none existant one!”

This is getting tedious. But. Why only some of them? Which particular insults do you think are acceptable and which aren’t?

And I have said hat a) I didn’t recognize the slogan as a quotation. And b) it doesn’t actually matter whether this particular T shirt is real or not - the principle remains, and needs to be discussed. Girls’ clothes very often have this sort of stereotyping slogan on them.

You may not think it’s important, but I see no reason why you (collective you) should be so obnoxious to people who do.

Luckyme2 · 16/03/2018 12:33

With the utmost respect to you curlilox having gone through a horrendous experience my heart goes out to you, but your argument against this t shirt is different to the feminist discussion that's being had here. I've been through some heartbreaking times in my life too. At no point would seeing a piece of clothing with Smile on it have pushed me over the edge though. Are you suggesting clothing needs to be designed so as not to cause offence to anyone who's going through a bad experience? I don't agree with the argument regarding it being unsuitable for girls to wear but I can see the basis for it (ish). But I really can't see the argument for clothes being the final straw for someone. Again with the Frankie says relax t shirts I don't think anyone seeing those would have thought 'how dare you tell me to relax! I'm going through shit at the moment. Equally seeing a t shirt saying you need to smile isn't going to make me think 'wtf I can't smile! Things are so awful. That t shirt should be removed. It's a completely different argument to the little girls shouldn't wear it argument.

BikeRunSki · 16/03/2018 13:55

I have just been in Next. In their defence, not that I think the Annie t shirt is offensive, they are also selling a child’s T shirt that says “Going to change the world” and a “Girl Power” vest.

Coconutspongexo · 16/03/2018 14:39

Maybe some of you should visit the next and Zara websites and see that actually it’s mostly boys tshirts that are talking about smiling.

I’ve only seen smiley faces on girls when I’ve looked the last couple of days not a quote like those on the lads, most of the girls tops everywhere seem to be very empowering

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 14:42

"most of the girls tops everywhere seem to be very empowering"

That's good to hear. Nice to know that we can make a difference.

sidewayswithatescotrolley · 16/03/2018 15:35

And b) it doesn’t actually matter whether this particular T shirt is real or not - the principle remains, and needs to be discussed

Of course it bloody matters, since you have INVENTED the principle in order to discuss it! The tshirt doesn't exist, the slogan isn't one, and the lyric is not what you decided it was. There is NO principle to discuss, you made one up!

You are right, it and you are tedious. If you want to ramble about bad slogans on girls tshirts you can do a thread on that; this isn't it!

BertrandRussell · 16/03/2018 16:05

“since you have INVENTED the principle in order to discuss it!”

I invented the principle that it’s not a good idea for girls - or boys , for that matter - have sex stereotyped slogans on their clothes? I don’t think I did!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 16:06

This wasn't a sex stereotype slogan....
