AIBU to regret DD’s name?

My DD is 2.5 and I loved her name when I chose it. However, unbeknownst to me, when we chose it we picked THE most popular middle name ever. Every little girl I meet has it! I’ve also met two girls with exactly the same first and second name. I’m starting to really regret the choice of middle name now I know every girl has it. I feel like my DD will grow up to hate it as it’s so common. AIBU? Sometimes I consider changing it before she is aware but then think I’m going mad? I’m 30 weeks pregnant so names are in my mind a lot.

Does anybody really ever use middle names?

VileyRose · 13/03/2018 14:56

Schools don't really use them anyway so I wouldn't bother.

deno · 13/03/2018 14:57

Oooh... is it Rose? May?

And I really wouldn't saddle her with a name change - that will make her life so complicated in the future whenever she applies for any passport/DBS check (if she wants to work with kids)/birth certificate.

No-one actually cares what anyone else's middle name is - it's not going to affect her life in any way.

Just remember why you liked it originally.

geekone · 13/03/2018 14:58

I doubt al of the Johns in the world feel "common" YABU

ThePinkOcelot · 13/03/2018 14:58

I wouldn’t worry if it’s only her middle name. It’s not like they’re used on a regular basis.

ParadiseCity · 13/03/2018 14:58

Don't change it, unless you have called her Theresa May in which case definitely do change it!!!

pawpatrolearworm · 13/03/2018 14:59

Why do some people get all het up about middle names? I can't even remember my siblings middle names, I haven't a clue what anyone elses is. They are never used, you could go your whole life without telling anyone your middle name.
It literally could not matter less.

Unihorn · 13/03/2018 14:59

Growing up I feel like 90% of my friends' middle names were Louise. Noone cared. My daughter's middle name is also one of those super popular ones but I can't see it ever having an effect on her.

pawpatrolearworm · 13/03/2018 15:00

(it's Rose, May or Grace, isn't it?)

HunsUnite · 13/03/2018 15:02

I'm a Kate, with the most popular 80s middle name. In my primary class there were 5 different Katie/Katy/Kate's and I honestly didn't and now don't really give it a second thought.
When you think about it, childhood lasts for all of five minutes and then your out into the big wide world. I actually really rarely meet a Kate in real life now.

rollingonariver · 13/03/2018 15:02

My daughter and my best friends DD have the same middle name and another friend of ours has that name as her DDs first name 😂 middle names don't matter much, I'd leave it!

implantsandaDyson · 13/03/2018 15:03

We never use middle names, our kids have them but they've never been used and all mine are at school. In fact I think they would have to take 5 mins to think of each other's middle names. I don't like my middle name (it's one of those Bernadette/Assumpta/Maureen names) but I just don't like it, it's never given me any cause for actual stress. Every one I know has a middle name after a granny/granda/saint - no one really cares or uses them.

tealandteal · 13/03/2018 15:03

I have a very common first name and middle name, and maiden surname. While I did sometime dream of having an exotic name I don't hate my name and I wouldn't want to change it l.

Could she be known by a nickname or shortened form of her first name on a day-to-day basis? She is young enough for to get used to it before she starts school and then she could be known by the name you choose, although her real name could be kept for passports and other official stuff.

DalekDalekDalek · 13/03/2018 15:07

Who cares about middle names? I wouldn't worry.

There were three other girls in my year five class with the same first and middle names as me. Did I care? Nope. We always thought it was funny and were friends because of it.

aaahhhBump · 13/03/2018 15:07

Lilly. There are only 3 girls in DD1(5)'s class who do not have it as their first name or middle name.

whampiece · 13/03/2018 15:08

I don't think this will help. It's the middle name that's the problem.

OP, in the nicest way possible, get over it! You are wasting time being emotional over something that doesn't matter at all.

Emma198 · 13/03/2018 15:09

Don't worry. I was one of 4 Emma's in some of my classes at school, I didn't mind it, actually quite liked it and certainly didn't leave me resentful.

I am of the Louise as a middle name vintage but have a different middle name. I felt a bit annoyed I didn’t have one of the “popular” middle names when I was growing up Grin

Paleblue · 13/03/2018 15:12

I changed my son's middle name. I was lucky that when I did it it was changed on the birth certificate. I think it was because I did it before he was 2. My son is 10 now and he found out recently and didn't seem bothered about it. He says the name he has now is better than the original one. I had different reasons to you for changing it. I am glad I did it. My son full name appears on the computer system they use at school so all his class mates and parents see his middle name.

PuppyMonkey · 13/03/2018 15:12

Both my Dsis and my DP don’t even have middle names. Parents somehow forgot when registering the births. Don’t ask, I haven’t a clue.

They have both survived.

readysetcake · 13/03/2018 15:12

It’s rose! I wanted it as a first name but DH vetoed it. Of course you’re all right, no one cares about middle names; expect maybe twatish, hormonal parents. Thanks for the virtual slap.

Though I like having a middle name myself. I wonder why they are still so common even though rarely used? It never occurred to me not to give her a middle name.
