AIBU or are we all going to be trapped in the UK from next March?

So, Ryanair and Thomas Cook are inserting clauses in their booking terms to say that if your flight abroad doesn't go ahead because of Brexit that's your problem. No doubt others will follow. If any deal is ever done, to allow planes to fly, it is bound to be a lot more expensive than it is now.

Is everyone planning many years of UK-only holidaying?

@noextreme it was I
Is there something wrong with hoping that people being paid to do a job actually do it ?

Sharperthanasharpie · 12/03/2018 22:26

Which is odd as the EU has benefited from the taxpayer at larger amounts

This makes no sense

MochaRioja · 12/03/2018 22:27

Get a job where you can't afford a holiday - problem solved! GrinGrin

SnorkFavour · 12/03/2018 22:37

Is this post serious even?? Is the OP M OLeary in disguise???

I can't believe people actually fall for his rubbish! He's been a staunch remoaner since the beginning, threatening all sorts before the referendum. He didn't get his way and has been trying to scare everyone ever since!

If you think that Ryanair are worrying unnecessarily, can you explain why please?

OP, Ryanair AREN'T worried at all in the way you think - he's obviously got some personal financial reason to stay in the eu and that's whats bothering him imo.

The eu desperately need our business in all areas and they can't possibly afford to lose the revenue our tourism brings in. Even German manufacturers are beginning to panic and are begging the leaders to sort it out, saying that if we're not given a proper trade deal they'll lose 61 billion a year!

We went to Europe before the eu and we'll go again after Brexit. If we have to get a visa, it'll be a simple matter of filling in a form and paying a small fee. Incidentally, if being in the club is so great and the eu bods are such lovely people, WHY are they being SO nasty and vindictive towards us? Why not say, ok UK, yes leave and we'll then have all these brilliant benefits to share between fewer of us, so it'll be much better - but as we're such nice people, you'd be welcome back at any time if you feel it was a mistake? Why?? Because they know the sham will be exposed, the UK will thrive and the union falls apart right there!

Look at all the tiny countries that manage perfectly well without being strapped to a blood sucking leech, yet apparently the 6th biggest world economy can't manage alone. Good grief, we're like an abused spouse, we really believe we can't cope alone.

Look at America responding to eu bully threats regarding the tariffs this week, it's been so funny to see the eu squirm. Wilbur Ross said this: "The tariffs that have been potential proposed by the European Union covers something like $3.5 billion of products. We have approximately an $18-to-$19-trillion economy, so this is two-tenths of one percent of our economy. That doesn't sound like much of a roar to me"

You've got to love it as their sham gets exposed.

But to ask if YABU, yes, of course you are.

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:38

The EU has received a higher amount of funding than it has returned

pawpatrolearworm · 12/03/2018 22:40

Snork, have you understood that this is not about ryanair and MO'L, but a huge concern to the whole industry and an actual real problem?

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:44

And all this nonsense from people claiming to have 3 digit IQ . The same people I presume that agree to shutting almost all of our coal fired power stations for the sake of global warming and then happily allowing the EU to open brand new coal fired power stations in Germany for instance. Seems odd

Sharperthanasharpie · 12/03/2018 22:46

The benefits we get from being part of the EU and single market pay more the £ contributions we make to the EU. Both in monetary and non monetary terms.

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:48

Then of course the remainers claim that they live democracy. However that democracy must fall within their beliefs and anyone who doesn’t agree is suffering a low IQ or is just plain racist. Then they claim the EU is democratic but can’t say how they themselves actually interact with their leaders
And what about financial stuff ? Which one of you remainers has the link to the accounts from the EU as from what I’ve read there aren’t any that have actually ever been able to be “signed off” as they’re incorrect constantly. Who runs a business like this ?

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:50

Sharpie how so ? I have never seen that balance in our favour . Always up for learning though if you have any “independent “ links

LineysOfArabia · 12/03/2018 22:51

Oh please singledadstu just stop making a massive tit of yourself. It's painful to watch now. Trust me.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/03/2018 22:51

Do threads in AIBU stay for ever, or are they deleted after a month like _chat?

I hope it stays, it will be interesting to look back at this thread in 5 / 10 years time to see how blissfully ignorant people were.

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:54

Tit ? Really ? Are you saying there aren’t any power stations closed here and that at the same time Germany didn’t open at least 5 ? Or are you saying that there are actual accounts that are signed off ? Or is it because there is no real answer and then I must be belittled ?

Sharperthanasharpie · 12/03/2018 22:55

I don't even think you are real @singledad tbh. I'm wasting my time.

singledadstu · 12/03/2018 22:57

Good answer sharpie much better than a real answer

Sharperthanasharpie · 12/03/2018 22:59

That was a real answer.

LineysOfArabia · 12/03/2018 23:00

AIBUs are forever ...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/03/2018 23:01

That's quite profound Lineys!

riceuten · 12/03/2018 23:02

I love all this pathetic ‘they need us more than we need them’ malarkey. Based on bluster, arrogance, and zero evidence whatsoever

IrenetheQuaint · 12/03/2018 23:02

The EU accounts are pretty much in order these days:

fullfact.org/europe/did-auditors-sign-eu-budget/

givemesteel · 12/03/2018 23:06

I actually work in tourism, and we are already suffering a big reduction in interest from EU visitors. If the issue with flights is not sorted very soon, we will probably go out of business.

Really clarissalarissa?

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2017/nov/17/weak-pound-record-number-tourists-uk-august

But yes I'm sure your anecdote from your personal experience trumps data from our national tourist board.

manicmij · 12/03/2018 23:13

Hasn't Michael O'Leary already declared he will be stopping Ryanair flights to and from UK unless there is a complete turnaround and there is no Brexit. Believe that is you will! The EU countries will not want to lose holiday trade never mind business trade via flights. Before free movement in EU only had to produce a passport not visas 2019so may be similar after March 2019.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/03/2018 23:14

Depends what happens to our currency. If it sinks in March then obviously we won't be going anywhere, regardless of whether other countries miss our former buying power as tourists. Some of us will even be pushed to afford to renew our passports.

usernamealreadytaken · 12/03/2018 23:16

@IrenetheQuaint did you actually read that link? "But it has consistently found significant errorss_ in how the money is paid out since it began giving opinions in 1995, for the 1994 EU financial year.
The exception to this is the most recent year. The latest report has, for the first time ever, foundd_ a significant amount of payments to be largely error-free. It found that “Payments for 2016 were legal and regular, except for cost reimbursement payments”."

Clarissalarissa · 12/03/2018 23:21

It certainly trumps it for our business, yes.
Our region is worried - they are not banking on being able to rely long term on a weak pound to keep them going. Which of course brings its own problems anyway. Many costs are up. And long term for people to visit your country, that country needs a good image. The people we deal with tend to be the ones who read the papers. They're fairly well aware of what's happening here.
