AIBU or are we all going to be trapped in the UK from next March?

So, Ryanair and Thomas Cook are inserting clauses in their booking terms to say that if your flight abroad doesn't go ahead because of Brexit that's your problem. No doubt others will follow. If any deal is ever done, to allow planes to fly, it is bound to be a lot more expensive than it is now.

Is everyone planning many years of UK-only holidaying?

He is a lovely lovely man and very proud of his country Smile

MinnieMousse · 11/03/2018 22:42

The UK government has actually described most of the issues in its own briefing paper. It doesn't come up with any solutions, other than quotations from Chris Grayling about feeling "very confident", but it does explain the European Common Aviation Area and the EU-US Open Skies arrangement fairly clearly. The report can be downloaded here.

So if Brits can't get out of the UK for their holidays where are they going to go & spend all their lovely (dirty) UK cash?

Illogical (beautiful name, by the way), it won't be a problem.

After the rise food prices etc., there won't be very little lovely cash to spare, dirty or otherwise.

Problem solved.

Hogwash
We were warned of a disaster the day after we voted to leave, it didn't happen.

The £ immediately lost value. Notice a number of firms going bankrupt recently? Maplins, ToysRUs in the last couple of weeks?

We were taken to court to stop us leaving, it didn't stop us.
Nope we were taking to court to make sure Parliament had a say in the decision. We have a Parliamentary democracy, and the Leave campaign was big on take back control, so if not to Parliament, to whom? May messed around appealing the decision and wasting precious time and money doing so.

We were told we would never get past stage one, we did.
Now stalled. There needs to be a solution to the Irish border question and one which doesn't break an International Treaty which the Good Friday Agreement is.

We were told EU nationals would be deported they wont.
Some cases have hit the headlines, and then the oxygen of publicity somehow causes the Home Office to rethink. Meanwhile,EU citizens are leaving or not coming to the UK.

Everyday we were told we were going off a cliff edge but that shriek seems to have went quiet recently except on MN Everything is moving along, a transition is being sorted and everyone wants a good free trade deal.
Nope but already discussed above, unless you think that Bankruptcies and job losses don't matter, that rising prices don't matter, that Peace in Northern Ireland doesn't matter.

OhHappyDayz · 11/03/2018 23:21

Yep. This actually has nothing to do with other EU countries wanting our tourism trade. Once our existing Open Skies agreements are cancelled (because we leave the EU) and there are no agreements to replace them (because all the agreements from 40+ years ago were cancelled when we joined the EU) there will be no legal framework for UK airlines to fly to Europe or the US.

Of course new agreements will be put in place and of course EU countries will still want our tourism business. But the point is that it takes years to put these agreements in place and in the meantime there will be no framework. So airlines won't be able to sell flights in advance, as they won't know for sure what agreements will be in place.

I think if anyone else says it's just like the Millennium Bug my head will explode. Flaunt your ignorance like it's 1970, why don't you.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/03/2018 23:38

Why do remainers keep starting these threads, they always end up the same.

"We cant leave the EU insert issue of the day, its to hard, no one has any answers".

Answer: "No one can give an answer yet because its still being negotiated and decided how it will work."
"But its to hard, why didn't Leavers think of this before they voted"
Leaver: "It will be fine, stop panicking"
"No, you are all stupid, its a disaster, the UK is going to fall apart"

And round and round. Why bother? Lets just wait to see what the outcome is and make a decision based on facts rather than fear?

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 23:40

yeah, that isn't what happened here or anywhere else.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/03/2018 23:41

If there was another referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, how would you vote? ComRes 2nd March 2018
43% Remain
46% Leave
All the doom mongering isn't changing anyone's mind.

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 23:42

Its called reality. you might try some.

JassyRadlett · 11/03/2018 23:43

In fact, over the past 100 years we’re one of the main places in the world that other countries have sought independence FROM!!!!

Yes, as someone from one of those places I find it interesting and quite telling that Britain, which is a very long distance from either totalitarianism or foreign rule, has decided on this particular issue for its national temper tantrum.

MinnieMousse · 11/03/2018 23:43

Perhaps because "It will be fine, stop panicking" is not actually going to solve the very serious problems this country faces if it leaves the EU without some very sound plans and agreements in place.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/03/2018 23:46

But talking about them on MN never brings any answers. We just have to wait and see, what good does all this hair pulling do?

Clarissalarissa · 11/03/2018 23:50

Walking - I think you should congratulate yourself, though. It takes someone pretty special to read all these threads, week after week, month after month, with contributions by a number of people with real insider knowledge as well as intelligence, and to still insist that we're all just being hysterical, and everything will be fine.

Yes, ladies, know your limits.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/03/2018 00:31

and everything will be fine lol Clarissa
Well its not just me though is it, lots of politicians, experts & commentators who are actually doing the negotiating are saying it will be fine. cue rant about how stupid all politicians are

What good does it do being so negative/stressing about something that might never happen, you will just dig yourself an early grave.

Clarissalarissa · 12/03/2018 00:34

Cry about it.
Remember that the UK once benefited hugely from EU hard nosed bargaining.

We are allegedly leaving the EU Walking , has anything actually been agreed and signed yet ?

Eh, who? Which politicians, experts and commentators are saying it will be fine? Do you read a newspaper? Which one?

What good does it do being so negative/stressing about something that might never happen.

you are pontificating on a current affairs/politics/economics thread but you have zero knowledge about it -and you don't really give a shit.

what a weird attitude.

sashh · 12/03/2018 06:31

We used to travel freely in Europe before ‘free movement’ ie people moving from poor countries to countries with a more generous welfare system. You just turned up and showed your passport - no big deal.

At that time half of Europe was behind the iron curtain. Some countries had limits on the amount of money you could take in or out of the country. If you wanted to work you needed a work permit.
