AIBU or are we all going to be trapped in the UK from next March?

So, Ryanair and Thomas Cook are inserting clauses in their booking terms to say that if your flight abroad doesn't go ahead because of Brexit that's your problem. No doubt others will follow. If any deal is ever done, to allow planes to fly, it is bound to be a lot more expensive than it is now.

Is everyone planning many years of UK-only holidaying?

Brittany, I went to Spain last October. Nothing like Kent at all where I was Confused. Not sure what that has to do with the open skies agreement (or lack of) though,

Brittanyspears · 11/03/2018 21:12

yes i saw Benidorm on TV last week, it looks awful

Chattymummyhere · 11/03/2018 21:14

Well it would be great for uk for all those going aboard to use the uk holiday sites. Silver lining and what not, keeping cash in the country.

quizqueen · 11/03/2018 21:14

If you want this country to succeed after Brexit then start supporting British companies. I would not give Ryan Air the time of day let alone my custom.

paniconthestreetsofdreams · 11/03/2018 21:15

Just posted this on another thread... fits in nicely here too! Depressing!

Sheasksmehowthecatsbeen · 11/03/2018 21:17

Which British companies?

Helmetbymidnight · 11/03/2018 21:17

The UK leaves the EU in March 2019 and ceases to be a signatory to Open Skies and about 750 other treaties that influence daily life in the UK, and which will take years to replace or re-negotiate

I knew you didn't understand this, squarecorners.

I know, just shout 'we won, get over it' to cover up your ignorance.

littlebillie · 11/03/2018 21:17

I think there was some issues over air space but as we import export food this way that is more of a concern. They won't let that happen.

What?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/03/2018 21:19

Yeah, because JC and his lot are a shining pro EU example.

The only one openly pro Remain Labour politician seems to be Tony Blair.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/03/2018 21:19

I dont get it panic

SisterFrancisBeaverhausen · 11/03/2018 21:20

Funnily enough I had this conversation with dh yesterday. We were discussing potential places we could drive to from the tunnel to go camping next year; I said there is no way I am booking anything after next March - not because I think we won’t be able to get to France but because I can’t face sitting on the M20/at the terminal for hours on end to try to get through the border checks. We can’t be the only ones being put off so of course there are going to be effects on the travel industry.

And to those saying ‘it’ll be FINE, it’ll just cost more/be more of a hassle/take longer’ - that’s ok then, I am totally up for that given that I never wanted this in the first place. Why should I put up and shut up, que sera sera, blah blah blah, of course I’m going to moan about it Hmm

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/03/2018 21:20

I would also like to know what British companies we should be supporting given that so many of them have been sold off to foreign investors

TalkinPeace · 11/03/2018 21:21

Could you explain ?
Who will not let what happen?
If European producers will make more selling to other than the UK after Brexit, they will do so
its very simple business maths

Sorry! I thought you were talking about O'Leary! You were talking about Boris, right?

LineyOfArabia · 11/03/2018 21:23

Ah, the mighty 'they', who have to mop up after the thicko voting disasters

squarecorners · 11/03/2018 21:28

Ah yes, the "I disagree with you therefore I'm super educated and informed and you live in a cave and think fire is magic" argument.
Do please bore off you supercilious prat.

Helmetbymidnight · 11/03/2018 21:30

You're defending the point is O'Leary is a cunt therefore nothing he says is true?

That's all you can offer, yeah?

Ninoo25 · 11/03/2018 21:35

I was planning to take our LOs on their first foreign holiday next year. It will be our 10 year wedding anniversary and we were planning a holiday to Italy. We would have been spending a lot more as usual, as we normally go on short holidays in the UK and wanted to push the boat out as it’s a special occasion. We’re now not sure whether to book at all, as it is a lot of money and we’re worried it wouldn’t go ahead due to the necessary customs and flights agreements being in place so soon after Brexit (we’d be going in May half term)

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 21:38

Have you been to Spain recently? Its like going to Kent!

In what exactly is Spain like Kent? The food, the weather, the beaches, the language, the people.....all quite different to Kent.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/03/2018 21:38

If there is some turbulence leaving the EU then its a price worth paying to leave. However saying we cant leave because of regulations is just nonsense, that is why we are having a negotiation and an implementation period, so we can sort out the regulations.

We were warned of a disaster the day after we voted to leave, it didn't happen. We were taken to court to stop us leaving, it didn't stop us. We were told we would never get past stage one, we did. We were told EU nationals would be deported they wont. Everyday we were told we were going off a cliff edge but that shriek seems to have went quiet recently except on MN Everything is moving along, a transition is being sorted and everyone wants a good free trade deal.

So yes there are some who want to derail the process by saying 'but its toooooo hard we have to stop'. Well there is no sign of it stopping anytime soon.

ForalltheSaints · 11/03/2018 21:38

Ryanair have inserted a clause as another reason not to pay compensation as they hate the EU rules for this in any case. Longer queues for customs they can blame on Brexit, or if they cancel any flights at short notice as they did at the back end of last year.

I expect there to be some agreement to maintain existing flight paths and departures at the very least. Getting the Borders Agency to smoothly manage any changes to passport and other checks might be the most difficult bit, or longer queues if staff absenteeism rises.

IllustriouslyIllogical · 11/03/2018 21:40

So if Brits can't get out of the UK for their holidays where are they going to go & spend all their lovely (dirty) UK cash?

That's right, in the UK - boosting business, keeping people in jobs & taking a huge chunk of cash away from the EU.

Who're the winners & who're the losers in that situation????
