To tell friend/bride her choice in shoes is terrible

So my friend is getting married in 6 months and has just told us bridesmaids (im the MOH) that she wants us to wear converse shoes with our lovely dresses.

The shoes will look terrible with the dresses and Im dreading wearing them.

Should I say anything? And if so, what?
Or should I just suck it up?

My step sister and I walking down the aisle at my brothers wedding.

The photographer had us making claws with our hands and snarling.

We had little mini picnic baskets with flowers in.

The photographer also tried to get us to do a roly poly down the hill. Think he got the gist from my face that if he tried he would be seeing his fancy camera going down the hill.

Honestly converse aren't that bad. They may not be to your taste but it's one day that you're there to support them and give them the best day you can. So yeah just smile sweetly and have fun with it!

Oh dear god, the bear outfits Shock I am NEVER going to complain again about any of the hideous dresses I’ve had to wear as a bridesmaid!

throwawayagain · 09/03/2018 21:12

I think the bride has styled this intentionally. If you really find it unacceptable, I'd ask them to choose another bridesmaid. Genuinely.

I had a great deal of compromise for my wedding, but if they had stated that my choices were wrong, I would have looked for new bridesmaids.
Perhaps you will get to choose when it's your wedding?

CottonSock · 09/03/2018 21:16

My sis in law had everyone wear converse after the service. They were grateful to switch from the towering heals and dance the night away.
Unfortunately my wide feet would never fit in them

Inthedeepdarkwinter · 09/03/2018 21:17

MotherOfBeagles you really are a good sister!

throwawayagain · 09/03/2018 21:20

...and to get this in perspective, I bought French Sole pumps for the bridesmaids.

Horses for courses. They loved them.

I'd wear Converse if a close friend styled her wedding that way. I'd wear slippers, if that was the theme.

I guess it separates the true friends from the self centred guests!

Teacher22 · 09/03/2018 21:21

Would rather die than wear Converse to a wedding. But then I don’t have any friends and that is perhaps why.

smilingontheinside · 09/03/2018 21:34

Omg my dd is a bridesmaid this year and is desperate to wear converse/trainers as she dosn't do heels, dress shoes or anything girly. She is in a lacy dress that she hates and has been shown shoes at £70 plus which she cannot afford or will ever wear again. She usually wears jeans and trainers (overpriced I think) and tee shirts this is do out of her comfort zone Grin

Buxbaum · 09/03/2018 21:38

Hang on, have I read this right? She’s in an emotionally abusive relationship and about to marry said abuser? You are tacitly approving this marriage by participating in the wedding, and you’re worried about your footwear?

CotswoldStrife · 09/03/2018 21:39

throwawayagain the OP has already stated that she is married and didn't make any rules about shoes.

The bling ones really do look like Lelli Kelly toddler shoes to me.

TheWonderfulCat · 09/03/2018 23:26

I have told her how I feel about the wedding, she still wants to marry him and said she really wants me to be there. She is aware his behavior is quite awful.

Me not going to her wedding wont stop the wedding

@MotherOfBeagles

Are you still speaking to the bride?

Puffycat · 10/03/2018 00:58

Please share why you are Nanny Ogg

Bitlost · 10/03/2018 06:30

I just don't understand why anyone would think it appropriate to ever tell you what you wear, be it their wedding or not.

NorthernKnickers · 10/03/2018 06:47

@motherofbeagles I’m crying here!!! And bless your heart, you were actually smiling in the photograph 😂😂😂

MockneyReject · 10/03/2018 07:58

If the cost really is an issue, you can get unbranded ones, glue some sparklies on and swap the laces for ribbon.
In fact, you could all get together and do it, over coffee/wine in the run up.

I have lots of similar footwear, including platform styles, which feel slightly less 'plain'

Actual Converse will have resale value, afterwards if you really won't wear them again.

dontbesillyhenry · 10/03/2018 08:03

Am I the only one who thinks converse are the most uncomfortable pumps going ?

dontbesillyhenry · 10/03/2018 08:05

After reading the full thread now...no I'm not Blush

MockneyReject · 10/03/2018 08:20

Oh, and yes, YWBU to make a big deal out of this.
You don't like her choice of footwear, but you can make the choice to embrace it. Less stressful for you than agonising over how to get away with not wearing them.

Have fun with it :)

EdmundSlackbladder · 10/03/2018 09:13

Hey Op, if you’ve gotta go and gotta wear the canvas trainer, go for Rocket Dog. They look similar to converse but are much wider so don’t do that thing where you want to cut off your own little toe. Cheaper too.

ForalltheSaints · 10/03/2018 09:18

I suggest pointing out this is the Lily Allen in her early days look, and see if this influences her choice.

Fbnick · 10/03/2018 10:58

Converse now do a small pump slip on style, as well as the original lace ups. They will be more comfortable for most and can be worn again. An orthotic insert will help your arch support problems. They can look relatively nice, maybe add some sparkling clear gems to them or a brooch with a glue gun.
I had my old blue ones on under my wedding dress after I walked down the Isle in killer heels. They were so so comfy.

Grin

And it wasn't a good look then.

JanKind · 11/03/2018 01:42

Go for the Primarni version and some arch supporting insoles. JOb done ...
