would you employ household staff if money were no object?

I'm a Nanny and I work in a household of 20+ staff. Mum doesn't work.
I was wondering today whether, if money were no object, I'd have a similar set up or not.

For context, there are several children, each with their own nanny and I manage those nannies, in a "Head Nanny" role.
There are also several housekeepers, butlers, maids, chauffeurs etc.
The family consists of the children and both parents.

I think I'd HAVE to go out to work, even though I wouldn't need to, as I get bored incredibly easily. But I suspect that I'd get bored of my job and then end up starting new things again and again. (In short, I'd suck at being wealthy)

Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, this is in AIBU because it was going to be "AIBU to be uncomfortable with the idea of household staff?" but then I thought I'd get ripped apart for not being neutral

Hell yes!

JanuaryJuniper · 02/03/2018 14:54

Without a doubt

UnsuspectedItem · 02/03/2018 14:54

Also, just to be super super clear I have no issue with people having household staff

Really? So your house is constantly full of staff? All of the time?

You premis seems to be more about the wife not working, but if money were no object, I think I’d be more likely to have household staff if I worked than if I didn’t.

SEsofty · 02/03/2018 14:55

Wow, it's hard to say that there really are these set ups.

Yep to housekeeping, cook and chauffeur oh and gardener

KurriKurri · 02/03/2018 14:55

If I could afford it I'd pay someone to cook for me - I hate cooking, and thinking of meals. Other than that probably not, I'm happy to do other stuff myself.

Minestheoneinthegreen · 02/03/2018 14:55

No. Categorically not.

dingdongdigeridoo · 02/03/2018 14:56

Not to that extent, but If I had more money I’d have a regular cleaner and a nanny for DS. It’d be nice to have a break!

Even if I were really rich I wouldn’t live in a massive house, so I’d never need a butler etc.

liz70 · 02/03/2018 14:56

Where do you work, OP - Downton Abbey?

SkaTastic · 02/03/2018 14:56

Definitely!!!!! But I would still work. I would just have a cleaner and a nanny for school runs.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/03/2018 14:56

No.

However, the adults must do something, whether it be hobbies or charity work or whatever.

And they are providing employment for 20+ people which is pretty worthwhile in itself.

DarthNigel · 02/03/2018 14:57

By not a nanny though. I'd have someone to clean, wash and iron and cook and drive me places. And do my hair. But I'd look after the kids myself (which is good of me isn't it? Wink)

FluffyWuffy100 · 02/03/2018 14:57

Hell yes! I would 100% have a housekeeper who would sort out the other staff which would include cleaner, cook, maintenance/gardener.

LittleMissCantbebothered · 02/03/2018 14:58

We all want to know who you work for now!

WTFIsThisVirus · 02/03/2018 14:58

Yes.

I would love to have a cleaner, and a gardener. We, technically, can already afford a cleaner, but DP would think it's unnecessary. We're only in a 3 bed semi and we manage to keep on top of it.

DarthNigel · 02/03/2018 14:58

I'd quite like someone to do full life admin for me too actually...pay the water bill etc...

FuzzyCustard · 02/03/2018 14:59

No, because I like my house to myself, but someone could come round with dinner every day.

Sparklesocks · 02/03/2018 14:59

I would definitely have a cleaner or cleaners, and maybe a night nanny to help with babies, but I think that would be it. Would probably get an account with a car company rather than a chauffeur as I quite like driving!

FitzFoolFoveverInTheNighteyes · 02/03/2018 14:59

hell yeah!!

i wouldn't have nannies though (no offence to you!!) but i would outsource everything from the cleaning to the gardening to the laundry then i could bake, read, write and play with the kids all day. sounds fab to me!!

Sparklesocks · 02/03/2018 14:59

And probably no not a chef, but would pay someone to cook and clean up when I have people over!

HerRoyalNotness · 02/03/2018 14:59

Of course I would.

Then I’d spend my days learning new things, playing golf and tennis, maybe have a crack at horse riding.

Being unaccountable for anything must be so freeing. I can’t even take a pee or shower without one of the DC checking where I am these days. Let alone go for a haircut or run an errand. My house is a mess, I have so much to do and none of it gets done properly.

FitzFoolFoveverInTheNighteyes · 02/03/2018 15:00

to add, would have a house with a 'play annex' - large playroom and kitchenette for me and the kids during the day so i wouldnt have to see said staff if i didn't want to!!

52FestiveRoad · 02/03/2018 15:00

I would, yes. I'd like to do all the fun stuff with my DC but then all the drudgery handed to staff instead. Do you work for someone well known? Nosey

TossieFleacake · 02/03/2018 15:00

I would absolutely 100% have a chef to come and cook every evening for us all. I find thinking of meals, shopping for ingredients and then preparing and cooking, mind numbingly boring and tedious.
