To think people should not have been rewarded for staying until work closed the site yesterday?

SkaPunkPrincess · 02/03/2018 12:52

So I got up yesterday and started out super early for my shift start time because I was driving in and y'know, snow.
at 9.30 they told all of us who made it in that we could go on full pay if we wanted if we believed our journey home to be dangerous. I consulted with my husband (minimal experience driving in this weather) and made the decision to start off home as the general weather was getting worse and road conditions not improving.
Site was officially closed at lunchtime yesterday and everyone went home.

This morning, staff who stayed until official site closure have been emailed thanking them for staying (fine) but then rewarded with a personal face to face thank you each and a box of chocolates!

AIBU to think I(and the others who left early) am effectively being punished for leaving due to safety concerns. Especially after they agreed to pay us in full (therefore admitting it was dangerous out there). Those who stayed were within walking/ public transport distance.

I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back for turning up to work like I am expected to but this is a bit off no?

Your company sounds nice. Can't really see what your issue is.

InsomniacAnonymous · 02/03/2018 12:56

How on earth do you work out that you are being punished, especially as you say "I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back". You were able to go home and still be paid. That's good isn't it?

WonderLime · 02/03/2018 12:58

You got full pay and got to home. I can't believe you are actually throwing a strop because you didn't get a box of chocolates too.

YABU and can have a biscuit instead Biscuit

chickenowner · 02/03/2018 12:58

I really don't understand why you are so angry.

You are being paid for a full day - I'm a supply teacher so lost a couple of hours pay because of the snow. It didn't occur to me to ask to be paid for the whole day. Consider yourself very lucky with your employer.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 02/03/2018 12:58

Have I understood this correctly - you got paid for not working, those who worked got a box of chocolates? And you are complaining? Either I’ve misunderstood or am completely lost for words

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 02/03/2018 12:59

You're not being punished. The others could have left if they wanted but they chose to stay, imo they deserve a reward for that - their loyalty and dedication is being rewarded

Passportto · 02/03/2018 12:59

OMG! The company behaved impeccably in the original offer, then made a small token show of appreciation to those who helped them out when they didn't need to and people are miffed about it?

All the people who stayed are surely owed an extra afternoon's pay/leave not just a box of choc's if you're going to be petty about it.

Enuffsenuffsenuff · 02/03/2018 13:00

You aren't being punished! If they were docking your pay I would understand but they aren't - you just haven't been given a token that others have as appreciation for the fact that they did something you didn't.

Presumably the people who stayed did so because they were able to travel home safely. There's nothing wrong with thanking those people for holding the fort. It isn't a criticism of you that you weren't able to. You made a sensible decision, but why does that mean other people shouldn't get a little nod of thanks?

This seems like a bit of office pettiness. Your company sounds nice, and presumably one day you will be the person who is in a position to stay or help out, and when you do I expect you'll be glad to be thanked.

Flicketyflack · 02/03/2018 13:00

My daughter stayed at school until the end of the day yesterday while 2/3rd of class left due to 'treacherous ' road/rail/paths. Some went for coffee others parents took them to the cinema! She was really peeved as were the teachers who made it in. 😊

SaucyJack · 02/03/2018 13:00

This isn't about you.

This is about thanking people who could've gone home on full pay, but stayed to the bitter end.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/03/2018 13:00

YABU, that’s really thoughtful of them.

melj1213 · 02/03/2018 13:01

YABU you weren't "punished" you just didnt get an extra reward, there is a difference.

You were all offered the option of leaving early or staying on. Those who left early were given exactly what they were entitled to (full pay) but those who chose to stay got their pay and an extra thank you for making that choice.

I don't see the problem with a company choosing to give people a little something to show they appreciate them staying when they didn't have to. I work in retail and we have an internal reward system and this would be how they used it - anyone who stayed on, even just doing their normal role, would get a few points (which you can convert to a cash voucher or put towards certain reward items) to show that the management appreciated that they decided to stay even when they haf the choice to go early.

RavenclawRealist · 02/03/2018 13:01

Your company gave you full pay to go home if you were worried as as an extra they are thanking those that stayed! You work for a decent company! Lots of people have no pay and no thanks for getting in! But yeah throw your toys out of the pram sounds reasonable!

Snowysky20009 · 02/03/2018 13:02

Biscuit here have my first

InsomniacAnonymous · 02/03/2018 13:03

You are lucky to work for a company which treats its employees so well. You have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Groovee · 02/03/2018 13:04

It wouldn't bother me! I have lost 2 days pay this week as I was unable to get in.

52FestiveRoad · 02/03/2018 13:04

My DH worked 5 miles into work today. Do you know what he got? Fuck all. No chocolates, no thank you. But then none of the managers had bothered going in so there was no one to say or do anything. I think your company sounds great, what is your actual complaint?

RoadToRivendell · 02/03/2018 13:05

You sound like trouble. I'd hate to have you as an employee.

52FestiveRoad · 02/03/2018 13:05

my DH walked 5 miles to work,

Happened · 02/03/2018 13:06

I agree with others, you were treated very fairly and what they did wasn't a dig at you.

CapnHaddock · 02/03/2018 13:06

YABU

noenergy · 02/03/2018 13:06

I would count myself lucky to get paid

SEsofty · 02/03/2018 13:06

What is the actual problem, and your company sounds lovely

Passportto · 02/03/2018 13:07

I genuinely believe that in your position I'd think "aw that's nice of them" even though I didn't get the chocs. It must make for a pretty unhappy life to be so concerned about what others have.

Racoonworld · 02/03/2018 13:08

You made the choice to go home when the office wasn't yet closed. Of course your company should reward the people who stayed out of loyalty - they could have chosen to leave too but didn't. It isn't a punishment for you but a reward for them!
