To think people should not have been rewarded for staying until work closed the site yesterday?

So I got up yesterday and started out super early for my shift start time because I was driving in and y'know, snow.
at 9.30 they told all of us who made it in that we could go on full pay if we wanted if we believed our journey home to be dangerous. I consulted with my husband (minimal experience driving in this weather) and made the decision to start off home as the general weather was getting worse and road conditions not improving.
Site was officially closed at lunchtime yesterday and everyone went home.

This morning, staff who stayed until official site closure have been emailed thanking them for staying (fine) but then rewarded with a personal face to face thank you each and a box of chocolates!

AIBU to think I(and the others who left early) am effectively being punished for leaving due to safety concerns. Especially after they agreed to pay us in full (therefore admitting it was dangerous out there). Those who stayed were within walking/ public transport distance.

I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back for turning up to work like I am expected to but this is a bit off no?

Wow.
What an odd post.
YABVVVU.
Your bosses sound lovely, and incredibly generous in the way they take care of their staff.
You are actually complaining that you got to go home at 9.30am, on full pay, and not expected to take work home, or take the time out your annual leave, because they didn't also give you a box of chocolates Confused

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 02/03/2018 13:49

Yabu. A free half day is worth way more than chocolates.

ChocolateCrunch · 02/03/2018 13:50

To answer your question - yes, those that stayed and worked should have been rewarded.

BearPear · 02/03/2018 13:50

I couldn’t get in yesterday (first time in over 20 years) and I will lose a day’s holiday. YABU

elQuintoConyo · 02/03/2018 13:52

Depends - were they Cadbury's chocolates?

SillySallySingsSongs · 02/03/2018 13:53

YABVU you are getting paid even though you left.

sinceyouask · 02/03/2018 13:54

Not being rewarded is not the same as being punished, YABU.

Pinkfrangipani · 02/03/2018 13:55

I don't think there is anything further to add!

Glumglowworm · 02/03/2018 13:55

YABVU

Your company sound great, you sound like an ungrateful brat.

Like a PP, my work bought everyone who stayed lunch yesterday, as a gesture of appreciation. They were supportive of people who had to leave earlier but also rewarded those who stayed to actually do the work that has to be done.

Today, the weather has worsened, public transport was all cancelled and the roads were treacherous. I didn’t make it to the office, like 90% or more of my colleagues. I HOPE that those who did go in get rewarded!

BackforGood · 02/03/2018 13:56

Am still trying to work out how you being paid for several hours of doing nothing in your own home, is "punished", when your collegaues continued to work for another 2 - 3 hours for their wage, and gained a box of chocs for their efforts. Can't help thinking you could buy more than one box of chocs with the money you got for doing nothing whilst they were working. Hmm

ilovesushi · 02/03/2018 13:56

I am going to disagree with everyone. It is odd to reward people for staying until the bitter end and potentially risking a dangerous drive home and adding to the chaos on the roads and burden on emergency services. You did the more sensible thing and headed off while conditions were still okay. My DH spent 11 hours stuck in his vehicle overnight coming home from work late. You rightly didn't want to put yourself in that sort of situation. Seems like they are rewarding blind obedience rather than common sense.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/03/2018 13:57

Weird reaction OP. I honestly don’t understand why you’re so cross.
Obviously management were grateful to those who stayed and showed it with a box of chocolates. Sounds like a fab place to work.

Lovesagin · 02/03/2018 13:58

So people didn't stay until the end of the day, the site closed at lunch, and you left before this, is that right?

CavoliRiscaldati · 02/03/2018 14:01

Seems like they are rewarding blind obedience rather than common sense.

with a box of CHOCOLATES? Get over yourself. Sounds like a fab company to work for, if some of their employees are not happy they are free to look for another job.

mollied · 02/03/2018 14:01

I can see how you would be annoyed about this but its not worth the brain power to continue being annoyed

Cheeseislife · 02/03/2018 14:03

You may not have got chocolates but at least you now have a selection of Biscuit

SparkyTheCat · 02/03/2018 14:04

As someone without dependent children and who lives within walking distance, it's often taken for granted that I'll cover when everyone else wants/needs to leave early, work certain hours, take leave at particular times etc. I don't usually mind, but it's nice to have it acknowledged sometimes. Yabu.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 02/03/2018 14:05

YABVU. They were kind enough to offer you an entire days pay even if you went home, they just wanted to give a little something extra to those that did stay as they really appreciated it.

Do you often feel hard done by when you’ve actually come out of a situation really well?

LemonSqueezy0 · 02/03/2018 14:10

You seem the type to always feel hard done by, no matter what. It's such a negative trait.

Take your free day off, and go.

HuskyMcClusky · 02/03/2018 14:10

Christ on a cracker, it’s a box of chocolates.

SillySallySingsSongs · 02/03/2018 14:11

Seems like they are rewarding blind obedience rather than common sense.

With a thank you email and box of chocolates. Hardly the crown jewels!

The office closed at lunchtime which in many places was before red warnings hit.

healthyheart · 02/03/2018 14:16

cheeseislife 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To OP here is another for your collection 🍩

ilovesushi · 02/03/2018 14:16

Wow! Just expressing another point of view on what seems like a really small issue.

Love51 · 02/03/2018 14:17

Someone in my family lives in walking distance of their workplace (less than 5 minutes walk). They were volunteered to cover yesterday's late and this morning's early because they could do so without risk to life or limb. If their colleagues are being sent home on full pay, to watch TV or play in the snow, I don't think they'd begrudge my family member a box of chocolates by way of compensation!

Creambun2 · 02/03/2018 14:19

You sound mega entitled. Grow up.
