To think people should not have been rewarded for staying until work closed the site yesterday?

SkaPunkPrincess · 02/03/2018 12:52

So I got up yesterday and started out super early for my shift start time because I was driving in and y'know, snow.
at 9.30 they told all of us who made it in that we could go on full pay if we wanted if we believed our journey home to be dangerous. I consulted with my husband (minimal experience driving in this weather) and made the decision to start off home as the general weather was getting worse and road conditions not improving.
Site was officially closed at lunchtime yesterday and everyone went home.

This morning, staff who stayed until official site closure have been emailed thanking them for staying (fine) but then rewarded with a personal face to face thank you each and a box of chocolates!

AIBU to think I(and the others who left early) am effectively being punished for leaving due to safety concerns. Especially after they agreed to pay us in full (therefore admitting it was dangerous out there). Those who stayed were within walking/ public transport distance.

I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back for turning up to work like I am expected to but this is a bit off no?

What do you think would have been fair?

CobraKai · 02/03/2018 13:13

Fucking hell.

Look up what punishment means - no it doesn't apply.

OnionKnight · 02/03/2018 13:14

Really? Hmm

SilverySurfer · 02/03/2018 13:14

I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back for turning up to work

Just as well you didn't get either then. YABVU - you got paid for a whole day - what more do you want.

Here, have another Biscuit

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/03/2018 13:16

I don’t really understand your gripe.

When given the option, you chose to leave immediately (& still got paid).

Others who could have chosen to leave, didn’t. They chose to stay and help the company out because they felt able to. They could have chosen to go home, but they dudnt. A personal thank you and a box of chocolates was nice of the company and NO reflection on you for leaving,

They’re not thanking those who stayed to infer those who left are slackers. They’re thanking people that stayed, that could have left despite getting home not being an issue.

You’re taking it as a personal attack on your decision to leave, it’s not.

Partypopper123 · 02/03/2018 13:16

I think you do want the chocolate and the pat on the back!
Your company sounds nice, lots of firms would have said you lose half a day's pay for going at that time.

sailorcherries · 02/03/2018 13:17

I'm betting that the opportunity to let others go was partly down to those who stayed being able to do so.
Someone has to stay until site closure; someone has to answer phones, set redirects, update systems, inform clients etc; someone has to lock up.

If people didn't volunteer to stay no one would leave until site closure.

LittleMe03 · 02/03/2018 13:21

YABVU you were told you could leave on full pay so you did. They were told the same but stayed. So they have been rewarded for their decision to stay and help and you are sulking because you don't think they should have been rewarded? How have you been 'punished'???

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 02/03/2018 13:22

My boss provided 30 pizzas at lunchtime yesterday to say thank you to the people who came in, under very trying circumstances. Full respect to those who chose not to but are we supposed to post them a couple of slices so they don't feel left out? Everyone got paid.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/03/2018 13:23

I got up at stupid-o'clock to drive to work.
Did some stock taking and some Mandatory online training in the gaps where patients cancelled.

If I'm lucky , I might get an online Thank You (not a personal one , it'll be a whole Trust email)
No chocolates though .

I don't expect a pat on the back either .

Hmm
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/03/2018 13:24

Oh , yes, we have to take Annual/Unpaid leave if we cannot come in.

MissionItsPossible · 02/03/2018 13:25

It’s only chocolate Confused
(I know that’s practically a sin to say round these parts but I’m not a fan so this wouldn’t bother me)
I thought you were going to say they got double pay and extra holiday to use in the future or something!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 02/03/2018 13:26

You're jealous over a box of thank you chocolates?? Grin

If you don't care about it why does it bother you rather than you just realising what a kind gesture it was for those who stayed to man the fort when they could have gone home?

YellowMakesMeSmile · 02/03/2018 13:29

YABVU, you bailed on full pay so why shouldn't those who stayed and actually worked be rewarded?

NameChangeCuddleBums · 02/03/2018 13:29

You got paid to be at home. They didn’t - they got paid to work and a box of chocolates for their dedication. I am sure you ‘got’ more than them.

Cheby · 02/03/2018 13:31

YABFR (fucking ridiculous)

CocoPuffsInGodMode · 02/03/2018 13:35

It's just an acknowledgement, a little gesture to say thanks. Surely that's a nice thing for an employer to do? Why on earth would you think those employees shouldn't have had that frankly quite small "reward"?

They sound like a decent employer as there are plenty who won't be paying where staff were sent home/couldn't get in. If you think about it you've got the better deal here as you got paid to not work!

LakieLady · 02/03/2018 13:37

The last time we had a snowy spell, I wrapped up warm and walked to the office, because the hill where I live was littered with cars that had slid down or been unable to make the climb. I was quite chuffed and fully expected a brownie point or two for making the effort.

I was within sight of the office when I got the text telling all staff that the office was closed and we should take a day's leave or work from home! I could have stayed snuggled up in my nice warm bed.

Worldsworstcook · 02/03/2018 13:41

Hmmmmm 🤔

Several hours at home with DH and dcs safe saved from a later dangerous drive through the snow and on full pay

or

sitting on site, away from DH and dcs and worrying about delayed drive through dangerous snow but with a box of chocolates.

I'd go with the former!

Given the ones that stayed were possibly covering the work of their colleagues who'd left, don't you think a box of chocolates is a nice gesture? Confused

FluffyWuffy100 · 02/03/2018 13:43

Just buy yourself some chocolate, and tell yoursefl "well done, @SkaPunkPrincess you are a good girl, good job, so proud of you"

This is the lest punk thread ever. although it is quite princessey (read - pathetic)

CosmicCanary · 02/03/2018 13:45

YABU.

They stayed when they had the option to leave and have been thanked for it.

You chose to leave.

I dont really understand your tantrum tbh. Confused

Passportto · 02/03/2018 13:45

Maybe the staff who left early should buy flowers to thank the staff who stayed and made it possible?

TempusEejit · 02/03/2018 13:45

Surely you getting paid to be at home is a bigger "reward" than the same time others spent working to be "rewarded" with a box of chocolates? YABVVU.
