To think people should not have been rewarded for staying until work closed the site yesterday?

So I got up yesterday and started out super early for my shift start time because I was driving in and y'know, snow.
at 9.30 they told all of us who made it in that we could go on full pay if we wanted if we believed our journey home to be dangerous. I consulted with my husband (minimal experience driving in this weather) and made the decision to start off home as the general weather was getting worse and road conditions not improving.
Site was officially closed at lunchtime yesterday and everyone went home.

This morning, staff who stayed until official site closure have been emailed thanking them for staying (fine) but then rewarded with a personal face to face thank you each and a box of chocolates!

AIBU to think I(and the others who left early) am effectively being punished for leaving due to safety concerns. Especially after they agreed to pay us in full (therefore admitting it was dangerous out there). Those who stayed were within walking/ public transport distance.

I don't want the bloody chocolate or a pat on the back for turning up to work like I am expected to but this is a bit off no?

You went home on full pay, that's not being punished.

Get a grip

Love51 · 02/03/2018 14:22

There is a parable in the Bible about this. Except it isn't snowy, and the work is field labouring. The employer pays all the staff a full day rate, even those that didn't start til lunch time. The ones that started in the morning felt hard done by.

Clearly your boss knows the parable, didn't want them to feel hard done by, and got them some chocs. Now OP feels hard done by. Moral? You cant win, people always want more than others.

There's also the non biblical parable about a mummy monkey sharing a banana - the kids whinge like the OP and end up with nothing.

applesareredandgreen · 02/03/2018 14:26

Where do u work OP? How fantastic for you - a company which advises employees to go home on full pay and rewards those who go the extra mile!

Are you aware that most people either have to use their holiday allowance, make up hours or lose pay - generally along with emotional blackmail about letting colleagues down - and those who struggle in or stay over are rarely thanked?

SkaPunkPrincess · 02/03/2018 14:37

ilovesushi That's exactly how it feels.

thank you for putting it in a much simpler and less emotive way.

To those issuing personal insults 😛

Would you of stayed if they offered you the chocolates? It's a box of chocolates not a grand in their bank account.

CobraKai · 02/03/2018 14:43

Gotta love it when the OP only acknowledges the ONE post agreeing with her.

I walked 45 minutes in 6 inches of snow to work this morning while other people who couldn't get in stayed in bed and have had a lovely cosy day at home.

Yes I appreciate the fact I got a personal thank you from bosses as I was the only person to come in.

I won't get a box of chocolates but if I did I think any of my colleagues that moaned were being fucking twats.

kaytee87 · 02/03/2018 14:46

@ilovesushi op has said

Those who stayed were within walking/ public transport distance.

So your point about driving in dangerous conditions is void.

Booie09 · 02/03/2018 14:49

So presumably if you left at 9.30 you got home well before lunch time? So your colleagues had to walk home because I bet public transport was up the swanny! And you begrudge them a box of chocolates! Or are you more pissed off the fact that you left home extra early was not acknowledged by your bosses! Jeez people are so petty.

KenAdams · 02/03/2018 15:00

People like you are why we can't do nice things.

UnicornRainbowColours · 02/03/2018 15:07

look you did the right thing for you, leaving because your not a confident snow driver. And got paid for it. I would of left too.. however they decided to stay maybe they don’t mind driving in snow whatever. So for going that extra mile they got an extra thank you.

It’s not a slight on you or anyone else for leaving it’s just A thank you to the ones who stayed.

thank you for putting it in a much simpler and less emotive way. *

Congratulations OP. You found the ONE SINGLE person who agreed with you despite the other near hundred who didn’t. Have a Star (and another one of these Biscuit)

ScreamingValenta · 02/03/2018 15:12

The staff who left got the nice bonus of some paid free time at home. The staff who stayed got the nice bonus of some chocolates and a personal thank you. The company has been very fair in my opinion.

midnightmisssuki · 02/03/2018 15:18

HAHAHAHAHA. I refuse to believe this is about a box of chocolates. If it really is - then you cannot have real people problems OP. YABU. Box of chocolates. No way. Ive heard it all now! This is so funny that ive decided this was going to be the joke to break the ice between my mum and me. Grin Thanks for the laugh OP.Smile

Bluelady · 02/03/2018 15:26

A box of chocolates?

Imagine Lady Bracknell saying this.

OP, you do realise this is ridiculous?

LittleMe03 · 02/03/2018 15:28

OP you may not have got a box of chocolates but you almost have a full box of biscuits GrinBiscuit

Bluelady · 02/03/2018 15:29

I should have added I'd have felt more aggrieved if I'd stayed and done half a day's work and ONLY got a box of chocolates.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 02/03/2018 15:30

Ew sour grapes, me thinks

EB123 · 02/03/2018 15:36

YABU you were not punished.

At my husbands work one man left early to catch his bus home (many were being cancelled and taxis weren't running), he was not paid, told it would be marked as an unexplained absence and was made to feel like he was letting them down. That is punishment.

lynmilne65 · 02/03/2018 15:39

some arses here

Glumglowworm · 02/03/2018 15:53

typical delusional OP who clings to the single poster who agrees with them

YABVU

Grow up.

Snowysky20009 · 02/03/2018 16:09

LittleMe03 she'll probably complain they are the wrong type....

ClaryFray · 02/03/2018 16:12

I think YABU.

They chose to stay despite being told they could go home. Your company sounds nice.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 02/03/2018 16:22

Ummm.... you got paid. I don't see your problem.

I'd be slightly annoyed that some of my colleagues were praised for choosing to stay, I think it was a tactless gesture in the circumstances although I'd probably privately thank staff who stayed, as a manager. They hardly got a worthwhile reward for it considering they possibly made their commutes home more dangerous.
