Was DH being unreasonable?

DH just walked to the shop for a few bits, got to the check out and said "Morning love, crazy weather out there!" She refused to serve him because he'd called her love. For context, we're in Yorkshire where every one calls every one love, DH calls his male friends love. This will probably divide opinion on MN but I'm wondering if it served him right or whether the lady should have served him? He had to walk as we can't get the car out due to the snow and the next shop is going to be a good 40 min walk each way!

And men DEFINITELY call each other 'love' in Yorkshire.. it's just how we talk - absolutely no different to 'duck' or 'pet' that is used in other parts of the country.

Wow what a precious snowflake of a woman. If she's offended by that she won't last 5 minutes in Yorkshire without throwing a wobbly everytime someone opens their mouth.

Please report back OP and if she does serve you then please confront her about your husband.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/03/2018 11:16

@BertrandRussell.

You do this every time someone post what you perceive to be anti-feminist stereotypes, and it's rude
No I don’t. I do it when someone posts something that is patently absurd. And an anti feminist meme

Dammit, you are right, those two things are completely different. I'd forgotten about trollhunting being fine where memes are concerned. Carry on.

BertrandRussell · 01/03/2018 11:17

“And men DEFINITELY call each other 'love' in Yorkshire.. it's just how we talk - absolutely no different to 'duck' or 'pet' that is used in other parts of the country“

I did quite extensive research after one of the last times somebody tried this one - I couldn’t find a single person from Yorkshire who agreed. Apart from an elderly uncle who remembered it happening a bit in his youth. So it is by no means widespread.........

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 01/03/2018 11:18

I work in customer relations and I get called, love, babe, dear, darling, doll. I’m a southerner, it don’t bother me in the slightest. If he was flirting with her and not simply talking about the weather in such obvious circumstances but then fair enough. I personally think she way over reacted.

upsideup · 01/03/2018 11:18

Were you both there? I can totally believe that there are many unreasonable, pathetic and easily offended people out there. Its very fortunate that you have never come across and are able to think that this sort of thing doesnt happen, but it does.

mydogisthebest · 01/03/2018 11:18

The woman was being ridiculous. She may not like being called love but she should never have refused to serve him.

I worked in retail in Essex and often got called "mate" by men. I really disliked it but never said anything and, of course, I served them and was friendly to them.

I have recently moved to Notts and am trying to get used to being called "pet",, "duck", "love" etc. I don't like it at all but guess I will have to get used to it.

Last week I went into a phone shop and the young girl kept calling me "darling". She must honestly have said it about 20 times. I was cringing inside

Fromage · 01/03/2018 11:18

Unless he left out the bit where he then leant over the counter and jiggled her tits, he wasn't unreasonable.

lol at sugartits

and I wouldn't like 'girlie' either but love, sweetheart, darling - said in a
friendly manner with no agenda aren't a problem for me.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/03/2018 11:20

I do wonder whether it's going to turn out DH has done something obnoxious and the 'love' was not the issue.

BarbarianMum · 01/03/2018 11:20

Well Bertrand I hear it fairly regularly. Where was your research done? Maybe include a few working mens clubs and coalfield communities in SYorks next time. Or just hang around the brass band scene a bit. Hmm

legaladvicepls · 01/03/2018 11:21

She totally over reacted. I work for a company with salesman and contractors based all over the country. The number of things I get called during the course of a day... one of my contractors calls me baby. I'm absolutely certain it isn't just me and I dont find it offensive in the slightest.

mehhh · 01/03/2018 11:22

Some people don't like it, I get that, but that's too far!

I'm not in Yorkshire anymore, but I only received love from much older men and in south Yorkshire (specifically Barnsley). Probably had man on man love more in Lancashire.

*as a greeting.

GrandTheftWalrus · 01/03/2018 11:25

Not placemarking

MsGameandWatching · 01/03/2018 11:25

I really would love it if this had actually happened so I am choosing to believe it did and marking my place Grin

sneezingfit · 01/03/2018 11:26

Southener here as well. It is strange when you go up north and people say duck and love but to not serve someone for it. Plus tbh it is (IMO) just everyone being nice to each other rather than myysogynistic
Super mean!

upsideup · 01/03/2018 11:28

Op I would complain, she cant just refuse to serve customers for no reason.

wijjy · 01/03/2018 11:29

I've been called Love by other men ( bus drivers mainly) when I lived in Sheffield. It's not just said by men to women (or women to men).

TempusEejit · 01/03/2018 11:31

I called our plumber an angel today because he came out to us so quickly, I'm wondering now whether he'd have been offended?

DiegoMadonna · 01/03/2018 11:33

Even in the southeast we have "mate" and "darling", etc.

The only people that say "I'm not your mate" are generally those who are about to fight you.

As in, only an overaggressive dick would do that.

TheJoyOfSox · 01/03/2018 11:33

The daily mail will be running this as a story, mark my words! They live this sort of cr@p.
Your DH was quite right to feel upset, the shopgirl is being ridiculous. I call everyone “lovely” and I’m not in Yorkshire, do you suppose woman can get away with calling strangers by a pet name more than men can?

I hope your DH got the bread and milk. Definitely boycott your local shop (once the snow has gone and you can get elsewhere)

Dancingmonkey87 · 01/03/2018 11:34

Blatant placemarking

CaviarAndCigarettes · 01/03/2018 11:34

Just another voice to agree northern men fall each other Love. My DH does it
