Was DH being unreasonable?

DH just walked to the shop for a few bits, got to the check out and said "Morning love, crazy weather out there!" She refused to serve him because he'd called her love. For context, we're in Yorkshire where every one calls every one love, DH calls his male friends love. This will probably divide opinion on MN but I'm wondering if it served him right or whether the lady should have served him? He had to walk as we can't get the car out due to the snow and the next shop is going to be a good 40 min walk each way!

I live in SYorks and have definitely heard men calling each other love.

MsGameandWatching · 01/03/2018 11:44

In Leicester and Nottingham and other Midlands places everyone called everyone "me duck" as in "thanks me duck". I well believe that men call each other "love" if they call each other "duck".

BertrandRussell · 01/03/2018 11:47

“Where was your research done?“

Well it included 37 men of varying ages on a Bradford shop floor. .......

BarbarianMum · 01/03/2018 11:50

Bertrand Try it again in S Yorkshire and see how you go.

Jaxhog · 01/03/2018 11:51

I hate being called Love, but I wouldn't refuse to serve someone for it. Especially in this weather.

Thymeout · 01/03/2018 11:52

Londoner here. My roofer calls me 'mate'. A black male assistant at Superdrug's checkout called me 'Ma'. I felt like Precious Ramotswe. I'm often told to 'be careful, love' by bus-drivers.

I like it and it makes me so cross when zealots of whatever cause try to police the way normal people interact with each other.

MsGameandWatching · 01/03/2018 11:53

In Abu Dhabi and Dubai all the men call me "sister". I quite like it.

Wdigin2this · 01/03/2018 11:53

Never heard anything so ridiculous, she be reported, she's obviously got a problem with customer service!

goose1964 · 01/03/2018 11:54

My Fil stopped going to a restaurant because the waitress called him love. Some people find it disrespectful

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2018 11:57

I visited Yorkshire a few weeks back and felt all warm and fuzzy being "loved" by every tom dick and harry I met. My DD, a hardened Southerner, noticed too and loved it. Even darn sarf here I get called love and darling, usually by women. I myself called a child I don't know darling only yesterday after he got chatting and wanted to know why I didn't have a dinosaur t-shirt

Can't wait to hear how the OP gets on

Bertrand you do seem particularly strident in your troll hunting these last few days. I've noticed it myself.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 01/03/2018 11:57

Hi there everyone,
Could we please call a halt to the trollhunting? It's against our very minimalist guidelines www.mumsnet.com/info/netiquette and from what we can see there are no stated exceptions for memes.

If people think that someone is trolling, can they report? We don't have any reason to believe in this instance that this OP is here to cause trouble, she has been with us a fair while. If you still think it's rubbish but can't be bothered reporting, consider moving along and experiencing some of the other wonders of the MN boards...

newcarsmell · 01/03/2018 11:57

In Australia you'd get darl, sweetheart, love, mate. Never been offended by it. The only time I get annoyed is when someone half my age calls me hun, sweet or honey.

Bluelady · 01/03/2018 11:58

I think a lot of us have noticed it. And very tedious it is too.

happinessischocolate · 01/03/2018 11:59

I'm getting wrapped up and going down there now. Will report back!

Hope you called her love too 😂

I'd pay for my stuff and then when she gives you the change say "thanks love, have a great day love" 😂

She's obviously feeling power crazed vis everyone has to walk to the shop and there's not another one nearby. A little power sends people mental 😂😂😂

CavoliRiscaldati · 01/03/2018 12:06

Hmm oh come on, that wasn't troll hunting! Or at least it wasn't meant to be.

Oh well, sorry

Shadow666 · 01/03/2018 12:07

Just place marking to find out what happened when the OP went down there.

MammaTJ · 01/03/2018 12:08

I think the OP has gone down there, called her Love and been locked in the shop!

LadySainsburySeal · 01/03/2018 12:11

If I didn't get addressed as "me ducks" in a shop I would wonder what I had done to offend! Grin

upsideup · 01/03/2018 12:15

Well it included 37 men of varying ages on a Bradford shop floor

Wow, that must of been all of the 37 men form the whole of Yorkshire!

mollied · 01/03/2018 12:26

Completely ridiculous if it offended her she could have just asked him not to call her that not out right refuse to serve him. I was in retail for years and got called all sorts of things never refused to serve anyone, the only time I refused to serve someone immediately was when I was a waitress and the customer clicked at me.

Aridane · 01/03/2018 12:28

What a trivial thread to trollhunt on!

Love the message, Helen Grin

smileygrapefruit · 01/03/2018 12:35

Haha just got back online as our power went. How funny that this has been reported/troll hunted on.

Yes, men round here definitely call each other love. Sorry if you don't believe it but it's true so believe what you want.

Anyway I went down there, chickened out of using "love" to greet her as we needed the shopping. When she gave me my change I said "thanks love" and she gave me a bit of a death stare and didn't reply so I guess she doesn't like it from women either, although she was pretty sour faced throughout so maybe she's just a bit of a dick.

OP posts:
mamahanji · 01/03/2018 12:37

I'm a massive hypocrite and so not mind being called 'love, sweetheart, darling, sweetie' as long as they are female.

When it comes from a man I find it condescending or inappropriate. But I'm from the south and we don't show affection down here. I thought it was normal for northerners to call everyone love of pet?

MichaelBendfaster · 01/03/2018 12:43

But I'm from the south and we don't show affection down here.

I'm in London and I get love, dear and, particularly, darling all the time!
