This is all the snow where I live and everyone’s got their knickers in a twist! Talks of possible school closures and one of the departments in my husbands work have been told to take Friday off because of the “adverse weather” 😂😂😂

Some of our main roads are closed now due to snow drifts and this other pic is a local pier.......... the waves are coming over the beach, up the prom and hitting the carparks

Clarrisa I'm in Scotland to and of course we are used to snow but I've never seen anything like this. I can only assume you are not in the worst affected areas. You say we should just get on with things? Buses are off. Main roads aren't ok at all, never mind my street. Ive tried over the last 2 days but my car just cant get out.

LagunaBubbles · 01/03/2018 19:51

This is Glasgow Central Station, right in the middle of the city. Can see why the trains are off.

Mikeyssister Im in lucan. The buses were sliding all over the M50 yesterday. You couldn't get in or out of lucan village this morning and its been snowing all day. Not sure how exactly you think the schools should have been opened when cars were sliding across the roads in estates trying to go around corners and uncleared back roads with steep hills that people would have to navigate. The schools were off to keep as many people off the roads as possible for the people who had to be on them. I for one was delighted to see the majority of my neighbours stayed put today. When the wind picked up and the snow drifts started it would have been so unsafe to drive. The storm hasn't even hit us yet. If where you are isnt as bad as us thats fine but we aren't far from you and it would have been madness to be on the roads today for a lot of people. I'd much rather a day off school than to put ourselves and others in danger trying to get there.

StripySocksAndDocs · 01/03/2018 20:09

They weren't yesterday were they @mikeyssister? Certainly not all school had to close, and luas and Dublin bus were running (dependant on route clearance). Red Alert wasn't countrywide.

You were originally taking about no need for the 'shut down' and the get inside at 4. Which is today. Shops and transport only close en mass today. Mostly this afternoon. But the whole shut down is for what forecast to arrive tonight.

There's no doubt it's going to to embarrassing if it doesn't. Met Eirann are probably feeling twitchy at the moment!!

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 01/03/2018 20:14

@LagunaBubbles course the trains can get through, just need Thomas the Tank Engine with his snow plough Wink

Latest news from our end -

  • 31 vehicles involved in 2 crashes
  • 20 crashes on one stretch of road
  • Local public transport running minimum/reduced service from 7pm this evening
  • Local police force begging people to stay in unless travel is absolutely necessary
  • Nurses and Doctors sleeping over in hospitals to ensure the hospitals are staffed
  • Red alert for flooding due to tidal surges and high winds

Even the gritters/snow ploughs are struggling and sliding down the roads/hills

I don't remember 1982 (wasn't born til 85) but I assume this is the worst I'll see it for another 30 odd years. My dad has been telling me about the winter of 1962, so if it was 50 odd years ago he remembers that, I may be telling my grandkids the same story of the 'spring storms of 2018'...............

On another note, would I be unreasonable to make my son watch The Day After Tomorrow, my DH thinks I am Wink Wink

Clarissa you are, talking bollocks to be frank. I have no idea where you are but where I am in Scotland there is no public transport. We are snowed in by snow drifts taller than me so, NO you most definitely cannot get about. The council are learning roads but there is a massive backlog with several roads completely closed due to snow fall and drifts m

Finally, this is the motorway near to where I live mid morning today.

Dailystuck71 · 01/03/2018 20:28

Urgh, it learning. Clearing.

WickedLazy · 01/03/2018 20:33

"We have pretty deep snow here but the roads are clear and I'm not understanding the fuss people are making. Leave in enough time, don't drive like a dick, jobs done."

Yes, because of course everyone can drive.

Purplealienpuke · 01/03/2018 20:36

I'm in central belt Scotland. Nobody is driving anywhere here.... snow up to our knees, can't distinguish pavement from road. Few roads cleared, no buses running, airport shut. So maybe we won't calm down just yet......

yolofish · 01/03/2018 20:43

I did actually do some panic buying today - red wine. I think that's entirely reasonable?!

FairfaxAikman · 01/03/2018 20:52

I drove a motorway home today after getting stuck at work last night.

I am a confident snow driver, having grown up is a rural area that was rarely gritted but I have to say today was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life - drifts materialising in the middle of the carriageway (having been obscured by blowing snow) that you couldn't see till you were practically on top of it, the tarmac disappearing altogether in places, snow coming in very suddenly reducing your visibility to three feet and "invincible" 4x4 drivers thinking you are driving at 25mph to piss them off and overtaking in snowbound outside lanes.

But yeah, this is no big deal Hmm

babyno5 · 01/03/2018 20:56

Meanwhile in Scotland!

To tell everyone to calm the fuck down?
Shockers · 01/03/2018 21:09

The wind is making things worse. The snow is so powdery that even when the snow stops falling, it’s lifted by the gales and spun around.

The wind is bloody scary here!

Shockers · 01/03/2018 21:10

And apparently due to get worse tomorrow!

speakout · 01/03/2018 21:15

It is so eerie here. Nothing is moving, no noise, no traffic on the streets, no kids out playing.

We did get a break from the snow this morning, DD and I ventured out to the main road- not a car, nothing, no noise even in the distance.

It's like a zombie apocalypse.

SaintJimmy · 01/03/2018 21:18

Same where I am, all seems a bit ott

Laiste · 01/03/2018 21:21

It is OTT.

DH pressed his face against the window just now and said ok, enough's e bloody nough.

We're rural here and it's getting hard to stay chirpy.

BrrImBloodyFreezing · 01/03/2018 21:24

speakout, we were just saying that - sat up in DS's bedroom doing crafts/stop mo, suddenly realised it was absolutely silent outside. We live within earshot of a main road that normally has traffic on all the time.

Lovemusic33 · 01/03/2018 21:25

I’m rural too, I have enough food for a few days but just hate not being able to go anywhere. I’m pretty sure I am now stuck as nothing has gone along the road outside for a few hours now, it’s a main road but no sign of any gritters or snow ploughs. I can’t see outside now as there’s no street lights.

manicmij · 01/03/2018 21:27

Where I live in Scotland there has been worse snow than what is here now. No red, Amber etc warnings were available just that there would be snow. At lot of younger folk have moved here and just do not know how to cope with it. Expecting snowplough to come along and clear their streets, fritters to be doing rounds 24 hours a day so they can drive as normal. Would never occur to them to walk short distances and also allow a lot more time for a journey, drive slower (a lot) and leave bigger distance to vehicle in front. They seem to consider that 2cms of snow is horrendous and can't deal with it. Everyone else has to fix it!!

speakout · 01/03/2018 21:30

Laiste- I feel that too.

It's just getting really tedious now.- and it's still snowing.
We are a family of 5 ( youngest is 17) and usually enjoy a busy life. Tomorrow is the 3rd day of being shut in the house, 3rd day of schools shut, 3 day of OH working from home.

I have had enough.

Strygil · 01/03/2018 21:38

Winter happens on a regular basis and it continues to take us by surprise every year.

LineysShanks · 01/03/2018 21:40

Oh how witty.
