This is all the snow where I live and everyone’s got their knickers in a twist! Talks of possible school closures and one of the departments in my husbands work have been told to take Friday off because of the “adverse weather” 😂😂😂

Your snow is due tomorrow and it’s Amber warning. Just because there is no snow now doesn’t mean people are overreacting.

Here in the southwest, the Met Office are telling people not to travel into work unnecessarily AT THE MET OFFICE. Surely that tells you something? We haven’t seen a flake yet.

Sallystyle · 28/02/2018 20:00

It does seem a bit of an overreaction where you live, if you have hardly any snow.

I am not looking forward to the black ice. The main roads aren't so bad as they get gritted at least. It is going to feel like -11 tomorrow with the wind. That's a huge deal for me. Especially as my job requires me to go outside quite often.

Although the snow is stopping, I imagine tomorrow's driving conditions are going to be awful. That scares me.

nokidshere · 28/02/2018 20:01

Exactly. There's virtually none here. It's more like frost on the ground than snow

I'm in Wiltshire and there was a light smattering last night which has gone today. But given the forecast for tomorrow and Friday I'm not planning on going anywhere.

It would be pretty stupid to leave the house in the morning without having a plan on how you are going to get back if the snowfall they are expecting happens.

Added to that I live at the top of two very bendy hills with cars parked on each side, and sadly the gritters only do the main roads so getting the car out will be a nightmare anyway even if it's "only" light snow or ice

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 28/02/2018 20:01

I’ve had a solid 7 inched inches here Wink

LondonHereICome · 28/02/2018 20:04

namechange only main roads are gritted.... those on backroads and ungritted areas can't safely access them

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 28/02/2018 20:05

Farborough was one of the coldest parts of the country last night. Anyway disingenuous to post this then mention you live somewhere with no snow. It’s coming tomorrow anyway

JaneEyre70 · 28/02/2018 20:05

I've just been to get milk as we had run out and fill my car with petrol at our nearest supermarket (6 miles). It was empty!! Had to get longlife milk so DH isn't happy, and there was only organic seeded bread left, no fruit or veg and no bloody multipacks of crisps. Two fecking days of snow predicted, not the end of the fecking world as we know it. Sigh. Though am slightly concerned as DH has got a minor medical procedure tomorrow booked for 4pm........ I'm not battling life and limb to pick him up from hospital when he's a raging hypochondriac and our GP seems to be encouraging him Hmm. They can keep him Grin.

C0untDucku1a · 28/02/2018 20:05

My dad has copd so this weather is making him housebound. Roads have been clear for me getting to work. It will be ice that causes the problem. My husband couldnt get to work yesterday so came home and worked from here. Today he went in but didnt get there until 10.30. If he had worked from home he would have done 1.5 hrs more work. It makes a lot of sense to get non-essential road users off the rosds in terrible weather. If people can work from home surely that is better for the people who cant?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2018 20:09

You are under an amber warning for tomorrow.

StarkintheSouth · 28/02/2018 20:10

We've had a few inches in Essex and the main roads got gritted in good time so driving hasn't been too bad. The tubes though, dear god. eyeroll I ended up staying at home as it just wasn't worth it. I think the ice will be worse tomorrow through so who knows. Like previous posters have said, best to exercise caution where necessary.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/02/2018 20:10

My DF's office in Dublin has closed for the next 2 days because apparently it will be "near suicidal" to be outdoors from tomorrow afternoon.

I definitely think they need to calm down.

BabychamSocialist · 28/02/2018 20:11

Depends where you are. We're semi-rural and the road outside our drive is completely out of use, as are most of the roads round here. The ones in the town near us are alright but the majority aren't. Kids' college couldn't get any of the roads clear and the buses weren't running. Same for my school. I suspect it'll be the same tomorrow as it's started snowing heavily again.

There's also a grit shortage which isn't helping matters. Luckily DH has been able to get out in his 4x4 and get shopping, so we'll be fine and we've checked on our elderly neighbour.

crackerjacket · 28/02/2018 20:12

Just a sec, a snow thread? There's been snow in the UK????

PNGirl · 28/02/2018 20:13

I'm in Wiltshire. Have you completely failed to realise that the snow is forecast for tomorrow and today is irrelevant? Jesus.

VioletCharlotte · 28/02/2018 20:13

I must admit, I love the excitement of possible snow! It's such a break from the monotony of everyday life. I'm going to make the most of it and work from home tomorrow!

Allthebestnamesareused · 28/02/2018 20:13

Marmalade - loving your little stealth boast there.

OP it's the beast from the east. I'm in Cambridge and it hit us today and will be moving eastwards so you may get it tomorrow or Friday is supposed to be the worst day.

ilovekitkats · 28/02/2018 20:14

No snow here but primary school closed tomorrow due to forecast. Seems ridiculous as it was sunny today but it is a rural area and school buses won’t run if it snows.

Secondary pupils who can walk have to go in, they are not amused, as the rest don’t have to. Grin

Back roads don’t get gritted so I won’t get to work if it does snow, plus of course DC is home now so no childcare.

user1486915549 · 28/02/2018 20:14

Surely it depends if you’ve had snow !
Over my wellies on our drive here, and been snowing heavily all day.
The military are out helping the police. I don’t remember snow like this since the early 60’s.

Allthebestnamesareused · 28/02/2018 20:15

I mean moving westwards (Just realised it was a phone autocorrect when I had to type this 3 times to get it right!)

lljkk · 28/02/2018 20:16

Be grateful all you have is a bit of hysteria.

Today (400 schools in county were closed) was fine for us, but burst pipes from today are threatening to totally screw up some plans I have tomorrow, and any further bad weather may dramatically screw up further plans DD has (very expensive) on Friday. I'm not happy bunny.

SomewhereontheM6 · 28/02/2018 20:18

Ok Scotland may have a red warning but it's 450 miles away.

As a child of the 70's and 80's most years had whole winters of freezing temperatures and " proper" snow.
It sort of stopped in the mid to late 90's ( global warming crisis) I think and every winter has been pretty mild since. Which has been fab.

Yes it's been cold this week. But it's nearly a March. Two weeks and it'll be in the mids teens again ( down South).

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 28/02/2018 20:18

I live in a city, it has snowed here for the first time in 10 years, the city has closed Grin not really but oh criky what a panic. whole departments at work were sent home, coms sent out messages warning of treacherous conditions on the road outside work which may have been true for the 10 minutes that the blizzardy snow was actually falling but the main roads were clear in minutes, granted the side roads were a bit tricky but I have staff already saying 'oh I wont be in tomorrow as I wont get my car out of my street!' so park on the main road and walk to your house Hmm some people use it as an excuse not to come in but when public transport is running fine and you are in a city near a main road with a bus route to work why do you need to stay at home?

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 28/02/2018 20:18

We’ve had loads in Sw Scotland, we love just outside a village along a farm track that has a hill to get out of, no way would I have got out and I feel bad enough I work in community nursing services and had to take a day off due to not being able to get car our, schools being shut. Also a lot of the places I had for visits roads were shut. When the really bad blizzards/drifts were on you could hardly see in front of you would have liked to have been caught in it

MumboJumboo · 28/02/2018 20:20

I'm in Wiltshire. Have you completely failed to realise that the snow is forecast for tomorrow and today is irrelevant? Jesus.

Yes, i am aware of the snow forecast but it's only 50% chance. Also, it's not like it's snow falling on top of an existing amount of snow. Growing up in Scotland, snow was just a part of winter. If it got bad, everyone went home. That was the system. That still is the system. Only in exceptional circumstances would preventative steps be taken (such as schools being closed in advance of major snowfall) and even then, there would have to be a large amount of existing snow on the ground for something like that to be done. We have zero snow right now so to me, this all seems a bit dramatic.

"Don't drive like a dick" Good advice.Just hope like hell everyone else on the road is not a dick.I drove with great care over a snowy road first thing this morning.Faithfully tailgated by a prat in a red Audi. When I encountered ice under the snow and was at risk of fishtailing, said pratengaged his lentil (no brain)and thought" I know! I'll overtake", into the face of equally cautious, equally at risk of skidding traffic.Stay home! All of us! It's a red warning for a reason.
