This is all the snow where I live and everyone’s got their knickers in a twist! Talks of possible school closures and one of the departments in my husbands work have been told to take Friday off because of the “adverse weather” 😂😂😂

@StripySocksAndDocs, we're North County Dublin and to be honest there's not enough to close us down (about 4 inches). Friend is in SCD and said exactly the same thing, except she's a bit more.

Don't get me wrong we're all enjoying the time off but it seems OTT at the moment to close down the whole country.

Dailystuck71 · 01/03/2018 17:54

It may seem OTT but the difficulty is the type of snow that is falling. It’s not wet snow that we are used to. It’s dry snow and very powdery - think little polystyrene balls you get in a bean bag. With the wind that is following the snow, the drifts are the biggest problem. Factor in heavy snow fall with rush hour traffic and that’s how accident happen and people get stuck.

We’ve had years with more snow fall. We did four weeks ago. It’s the drifting that is the huge problem.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 01/03/2018 17:57

We have a lot of snow, but this made my head wobble - A nursery round here has posted on facebbok that they are closed due to "unseasonable weather" HmmConfused
(If winter isn't the season for snow, then when is?!)

beardies · 01/03/2018 17:59

OP totally agree with you. I’m from Scotland too. I live in Hertfordshire and work in Bedfordshire now and we have not even an inch of snow, no ice, just slush on the roads. Absolute idiots in their 4x4s doing 5 miles an hour. Absolutely pathetic and dangerous!

BrrImBloodyFreezing · 01/03/2018 17:59

Well, the snow here (Devon) started as predicted mid afternoon. By the time the schools would have got out, there was enough snow on the side roads that it would have been very dangerous having large numbers of children plus vehicles trying to do pick-ups, so the advice to shut down at lunch time was absolutely spot on. It's coming down at about 2cm an hour, already quite a thick covering. We're just back from an afternoon sledging in the park.

Portia that's dreadful Sad

speakout · 01/03/2018 17:59

Agreed about the snow.

It's stopped for now ( been snowing all day) but the wind is so strong an d the snow so light and powdery that it is being whipped up by the wind and blowing in all directions.

There is as much snow in the air as there has been when its actually snowing.
This mechanism is leading to snow being moved around to such an extent that we have drifts of 5 or six foot in places, against cars, in roads.
It's very unsafe to go out.

StripySocksAndDocs · 01/03/2018 17:59

I think the 'In by 4' (in ireland) is for what's on the way, rather than what's here at the moment.

It's similar to storm Ophelia. The shut down and 'get inside and stay inside' probably save lives or prevent injury. Lots in the east of the country thought it stuff of nonsense. But the east wasn't as bad.

There is the risk of cause these things might not happen Meteorology is quite a capricious science. There's the risk it might end up looking like an over reaction. But from what they can predict what's coming at us looks like it's going to be bad enough to warrant the lost of economy a shut down causes.

shakeyourcaboose · 01/03/2018 17:59

There's just been a story on local radio about a home care worker who has been found dead in the snow while on home visits. Was uncontactable and then traced using phone app. It's really starting to worry me as have never seen it this bad.

Shona52 · 01/03/2018 18:01

Well it’s been so bad here - I’m up in Scotland in the red risk area and a friend on mine was stuck on the M80 for 13 hours. I’m having to dig my way out of the house today

Re. “unseasonable weather”, well actually this is the first day of Spring.

dementedma · 01/03/2018 18:03

agree with daily. We are used to snow in this part of the country but the wind and the drifting are making conditions far far worse. Now knee deep in the garden and much deeper in drifts. Has been snowing all day and shows no sign of stopping.

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 18:03

(If winter isn't the season for snow, then when is?!)

In some places its never the season for snow. They never get snow, ergo it is unseasonable weather.

Richdebtomdom · 01/03/2018 18:08

If you’re happy to spend millions each year to maintain an infrastructure to cope with a once in a ten year snow fall then... fine.

OJZJ · 01/03/2018 18:09

Bah my message deleted....
MumboJumboo Another Northerner shaking her head in dispair....
Never understood the mad hysteria down south.
Am in Kent not even a cm of snow here no Ice on roads and v little snow on pathways (although bloody cold!)
Half the schools are shut (ok elderly heating systems may be unable to cope in some schools but last year my sons broke down and got told options were wrap em up as much as possible if sending in or they can have a day off IF they have to.. )I set off to work today and got a message they had decided to close the whole building rather than open up half staffed-not a danger option we are in an office. We used to reguarly get 6-10inches of snow back home and remember digging thecar out of snow- if it was too bad to drive, you walked and never remember trains cancelling over a flurry... I understand back home they are on red alert in some areas with drifts, Ice, no power etc but down het

OJZJ · 01/03/2018 18:10

Gilead I am jealous!

ItMadeMyEyesWater · 01/03/2018 18:12

What really pisses me off is all this feckin panic buying. WHY FFS!!!

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 01/03/2018 18:15

We have snow on our beaches and the tidal surges over the coastal paths are unreal. We currently have a lighthouse at the end of the pier, but no pier as it's constantly under waves haha. I'm happy with the hysteria, I ain't going anywhere and I won't be til it lets up. Work and school closed til Monday, that'll do for me :) Until then, it's 3 in a bed, keeping warm, watching movies and raiding the freezers for whatever random 'batch cook' I've saved :D

Blackteadrinker77 · 01/03/2018 18:26

If winter isn't the season for snow, then when is?

It's not winter any more, it's spring

Barbara1956 · 01/03/2018 18:38

Wiltshire...snowed in and it is chucking it down...my hound is happy but I am not going out anytime soon!!! He can stay in the gardenConfused

Lovemusic33 · 01/03/2018 18:46

Snowed in here too now and still snowing.

It is late for snow, it is spring, hopefully in a weeks time spring will actually arrive and the snow will be long gone.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 01/03/2018 19:07

I know it’s been a long time since we’ve had snow like this! I actually attempted to go out this morning as I work in community nursing and there were a few urgent visits that needed done but I finished those and came straight back home and this has happened since then!

We are down to one door can still just about go out the front door but it’s heading the same way!

mikeyssister · 01/03/2018 19:12

@StripySocksAndDocs were you around in 1982? Now that was snow!!

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/03/2018 19:17

Were you around in 1982? Now that was snow!!

We drove from Cornwall to Scotland to visit my grandparents that winter. Then couldn't drive back. 8 of us crammed into a very small terraced house. Joy!

StripySocksAndDocs · 01/03/2018 19:26

Yes. But as I've already said the 'shut down' is because that's what is expected. It of course still might not happen.

Though where I am there's a good bit of snow - not 82 levels - but as the temp rose enough to csuse a slight defrost and then dropped again theres a lot of frozen snow about. Frozen snow is higher risk than fluffy.

mikeyssister · 01/03/2018 19:35

@StripySocksAndDocs but that's my point about it being what's expected. There was no need for schools to be closed yesterday or Dublin Bus to be off today.

By all means stop things as needed but not hugely on advance.
