Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

Higher end - tasting menu at the montagu arms in the new forest

Cheaper - Mediterraneo in Brighton. Lovely tiny Italian place only open on Friday and Saturday evenings

BananaHarvest · 28/02/2018 06:49

I think it’s less about the restaurants and more about why you are there, who your with and how happy you are. We’ve done fine dining a plenty but sometimes a dog friendly cafe looking over a beautiful beach, a roaring wood burner and smiley young staff serving bacon rolls with huge mugs of tea comes close to heaven.

ImListening · 28/02/2018 06:51

Also best pasta dish - locanda locatelli

Best Indian Benares closely followed by the Cinnamon Club

Best view - Sharrow bay, the shard followed by inverlochy

Le Gavroche- food was lovely but soft voices so couldn’t relax

Hakkasan is good but not great

Going to the hand & flowers soon so fingers crossed that will be good

Seadrift in Porthleven, Cornwall. Relaxed atmosphere, wonderful service and the most amazing food (not just fish) I have eaten in the UK. Fantastic!

Grumpbum · 28/02/2018 06:57

Locally, Pulpo negro in Alsford.

Fosterdog123 · 28/02/2018 07:01

Quilligans in Blackpool. I mean, not really but it definitely deserves a mention. We ate there recently and it was fantastic. Staff were brilliant, lovely historic building, the menu is huge (both in choice AND the actual menu itself is huge!!), service is super fast, big portions, super food and dead reasonable. Oh and it's licensed too 👍🏼

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/02/2018 07:04

Toss up between Michael Roux at The Landau, Pidgin in Hackney and Aizle in Edinburgh.

Theo Randall at the Intercontinental never disappoints but the atmosphere in the restaurant is a bit flat.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 28/02/2018 07:05

The Waterside Inn and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester are my standouts. Food and service absolutely superb.

One of the nicest pub meals we've had has been at the Cod and Lobster in Staithes. Lovely, home-cooked food which was just what we needed after a long walk.

MrsEricBana · 28/02/2018 07:11

Not been but really fancy the Hand & Flowers. Best individual dish I have ever tasted was at Gidleigh Park years ago.

Jammydodger81 · 28/02/2018 07:16

I was just going to say Michel Roux Jr at the Landau Billy, it’s not just the food but the service was amazing, the staff were so nice and always there as soon as you need them but not hovering round your table. I had the cheese cart which was really good.

Most disappointing I’ve had was Savini’s at the criterion, beautiful restaurant but the food wasn’t amazing and service felt a bit lacking.

minmooch · 28/02/2018 07:19

Tom Kerridge's Hand and Flowers in Marlow. It was spectacular food, every mouthful was a sensation. Need to book three months in advance though.

The Smith in New York - fabulous diner, beautiful 1920's interior, fabulous, fabulous breakfast.

sandgrown · 28/02/2018 07:22

Northcote Manor near Clitheroe. I have a friend who also loves Quilligan's cafe in Blackpool !

GinIsIn · 28/02/2018 07:23

We had a terrible meal at the River Cafe - just grim. It didn’t live up to expectation at all.

Places I’ve loved on the high end side: waterside Inn, the Hand in Flowers, and Quillon was amazing - a really incredible tasting menu.

Also love Maggie Jones in Kensington.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 28/02/2018 07:33

I'm so excited to see that Roganic has reopened. That was probably the best meal I've had in the UK. Also loved Midsummer House.

Best low key restaurant, Seadrift in Porthleven. So many great restaurants around there and this one looks like little more than a cafe but the food is amazing. Had the best mussels of my life there, the size of king prawns and so sweet.

TrickyD · 28/02/2018 07:38

Le Manoir and La Gavroche. Least liked, Hibiscus. (Not sure whether it still exists )

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 28/02/2018 07:39

Chez Roux at the Inver Lodge Hotel, Lochinver for my husband's 50th last year. Absolutely wonderful food and I've never felt more looked after anywhere I've stayed.

At the other end of the scale, the Trawler chip shop in Golspie does the best chips ever :)

WeirdnessOfDoom · 28/02/2018 07:42

Letterbox in Newtonmore. If you’re ever near the Cairngorms deroute a bit from A9. It’s really worth it, their food is amazing.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 28/02/2018 07:45

Another shout out for Le Manoir- most amazing meal / dining experience! We got to meet Raymond Blanc too who was lovely Smile

Welshdragon13 · 28/02/2018 07:47

Alimentum Cambridge
Midsummer house Cambridge
Sticky walnut chester

wintermonster · 28/02/2018 08:32

Le Manor was very special

Loved The Coach in Marlow

Also The old parsonage in Oxford

TheGoodEnoughWife · 28/02/2018 08:45

Midsummer house - so good, see it has a few mentions.
Have booked for the Hand and Flowers in April so pleased to see that mentioned too.

Brasserie Zedal in London is excellent and not too pricey considering location.

BaffledMummy · 28/02/2018 08:58

Another for Castle Terrace. The taster menu with paired wines is amazing.

monkeysee100 · 28/02/2018 09:01

Wales is underrepresented!
James Sommerin in Penarth is wonderful. The Walnut Tree is always fantastic and laid back. The Foxhunter was disappointing

For less ££ the potted pig is great.

Elsewhere, the Hand and Flowers was lovely.

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/02/2018 09:11

Totally forgot about Kitchen Table at Maze. Amazing meal and experience.

bettytaghetti · 28/02/2018 09:15

I love Restaurant Story in London; wonderfully inventive & fun food and the staff are absolutely lovely. Looking forward to going again in a couple of weeks.

Worldwide, we also had the most fantastic experience at the French Laundry. We were also there in 2009 Pikehau; given how few tables there are, it would have been funny if we were there the same night! I think that Tom Sellers who owns Restaurant Story worked under Thomas Keller in NY and the vibe at Restaurant Story reminded me of French Laundry

Think we may be blacklisted from Morston Hall! Last time we were there with friends and we were having such a lovely time catching up that the waiting staff found it hard to interrupt us to serve & introduce the food (we did apologise!). When Galton did the rounds of the tables at the end of the evening, he completely ignored us! We always go to fabulous restaurants with this particular couple, but we may as well eat at Café Rouge for all the attention the food gets when we start talking!
