Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

@goose1965 do you remember anything about the Indian restaurant? I live in Soton and love Indian food and am keen to try it.

pandarific · 27/10/2018 04:20

High end: Bailiffscourt Hotel in West Sussex - lovely, lovely food and incredible spa facilities
Normal: Plateau in Brighton - lovely French bistro, they can't do a bad dish!

cantquitebelieveit12 · 27/10/2018 04:59

not sure if it’s been mentioned but I love the Ivy, great service, relaxed, buzzy & hearty food. I like fine dining but sometimes find it fussy & stuffy. Also love Barrafina.

Biggest disappointment was the Wolseley, had brunch there & the food was only ok.

Chrisinthemorning · 27/10/2018 05:39

The Black Swan at Oldstead is lovely.
L’Enclume wins though, went for my 40th.

gertiethetightsister · 27/10/2018 05:41

Moor hall, ormskirk. Amazing 😁

Henrysmycat · 27/10/2018 05:45

We just came back after celebrating in NYC and having the tasting menu at 11 Madison Park, 2017 best restaurant in the world with Daniel Humm at the helm. Well, I can safely say, I can die happily now as that was the most amazing food, I ever had. Everything else after that is ok.

Nakedavenger74 · 27/10/2018 06:07

64 degrees in Brighton. We'd drive from south london just to go. Down to earth but incredible food. No stuffed shirts or wanky platery. Just amazing food.

Jellycatspyjamas · 27/10/2018 06:23

@Piffpaffpoff
The Bistro in Kingussie. Near Aviemore. Only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, and if you don't book ahead you might not get in. Amazing food. Only has about 10 tables.

We stumbled across this place more by luck than design a few years ago, absolutely beautiful food and lovely personal service - excellent.

OliviaStabler · 27/10/2018 06:25

Best food ever was Restaurant Sat Baines. My favourite restaurant is The Frog by Adam Handling.

Would recommend Le Gavroche. If you want to feel special, go there. If you do, the cheese soufflé is an absolute must.

Lanaa · 27/10/2018 06:38

The Rivals in Manchester. It's the most underrated place ever, I think it's relatively unknown as it's tucked away inside the Royal Exchange building but it's a separate business to the theatre. Anyway the food is magnificent. Decent portions, service is excellent, fairly relaxed and the setting is lovely too.

ILoveGraveGhoul · 27/10/2018 06:41

Mowgli In Liverpool. It's amazing.

famousfour · 27/10/2018 06:54

My favourite meals - went to hedone in Chiswick a few year ago and loved it. Manor as others have said but it was alot of food and I always prefer buzzy restaurants rather than ones where everyone is here on a ‘special occasion’.

Ledbury and Gavroche. The Wolseley is not really about the food but always love eating there.

Liked gymkhana too.

Had a fabulous meal at chez Bruce but it was a long time ago now.

I haven’t been anywhere for a while...

sdaisy26 · 27/10/2018 07:15

@pramface2018 I bet it’s Kohinoor in Portswood. If you haven’t eaten there you should definitely try it.

I love The Pig (in the Forest & near Bath are the 2 I’ve been to). Totally unpretentious but gorgeous food and lovely staff.

And the best jacket potato I’ve ever eaten is at The Quarry Cafe in Machynlleth.

CherryPavlova · 27/10/2018 10:09

It’s less about the restaurants and more about the company, the mood, the joy of the occasion. Sometimes fish and chips on a sea wall watching the sunset is heavenly and couldn’t be bettered by a whole wall of Michelin stars.
We’ve eaten at lovely restaurants in the U.K. and abroad but sometimes they don’t feature in the top 20 favourite meals. Sometimes we get the giggles at the pretentiousness of it all with each of the three types of butter described in detail by a fawning waiter.
Lovely places - Ashers in Birmingham for its cocktails, our The White Horse (which won pub of the year), Casamia in Bristol, Cinnamon club, Manoir Cat, Seahorse in Dartmouth, Taylor’s in Dartmouth, Lima, the Baywatch in St Helens, the shack near Thurlestone, Chewton Glen for tea.
Abroad, again it’s the event rather than the place but Geranium, Septime, Asher Dubai, Arzak but also hot dogs from a stall in Reykjavik in a blizzard, strudel and hot chocolate atop a mountain in Salzburg, a BBQ on an isolated but perfect beach in Greece.

Chez Bruce, SW London
Rules, central London
Nobu, Mayfair, Central London

Delicious.

OHolyNightOwl · 27/10/2018 11:57

I love Sketch, but have been to so many good restaurants and pretty much like ALL food, so find it hard to pick other faves.

Recent big let down was Marcus..and I find that hard to admit as he is the ice-blue eyed king! I used to love Petrus too. Woe.

Mominatrix · 27/10/2018 12:10

For a nice but relaxed family special meal, The Sportsman in Seasalter.

For a fantastic adult meal with friends, Kitchentable at Bubbledogs.

Our local nice meal, La Trompette - reiliably nice food and service.

Great place for traditional white tablecloth meal, The Greenhouse.

A more relaxed meal with friends, Kitty Fisher's.

Mominatrix · 27/10/2018 12:12

Olivia, am curious about the Frog - is that the place opened up by the runner up from Masterchef the Professionals? I really liked him and was disappointed he flubbed up his last dishes. What did you like about it?

GoofyIsACow · 27/10/2018 12:23

Just following, thank you for a great thread :)

OnGoldenPond · 27/10/2018 12:59

Apple cross Inn on the Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands.

Restaurant was only the size of a front room, just a few tables. Best and freshest seafood I've ever had. Caught that morning in the bay in front of the pub.

Wonderful area.

lola006 · 27/10/2018 14:27

I was just coming back to this thread after reading it in the middle of the night to say I couldn’t believe Kitchen Table @ Bubbledogs hadn’t been mentioned, but it just was! Absolutely amazing meal, worth every penny...James Knappett is brilliant.

DH and I also really liked The Ledbury and we’re recently blown away by Corner Stone in Hackney Wick.

Out of London, Stark in Broadstairs was something special. Worth the trip if you can get a table.

Drummingisfun · 27/10/2018 14:59

These are not on the same level of michelin starred budget but I've had really good food at (all in Bristol)

Poco Tapas (think maybe it has a star now)

Adelina yard, small and cosy, good food,

Bells diner in it's previous incarnation
Bells dinner in it's current incarnation as a tapas place - although now very different we ate well, everything was tasty and wine excellent.

The Pony and Trap (does have a star) had the best pudding I have ever eaten here

And for a very budget friendly meal that never disappoints I love Souk Kitchen. Tje restaurant is always warm and busy with plenty of happy eating people, service is friendly if a little slow, but most importantly the food is bursting with flavour, portions and generous and the prices are very fair.

Cherries101 · 27/10/2018 15:01

Chai Pani, Leicester
Blue Peter, Leicester
Sravana Bhavan, North London
Akbars, Birmingham
Dishoom, Carnaby St
Angel’s Cafe, Edinburgh

Iooselipssinkships · 27/10/2018 15:10

Burger King

abacucat · 27/10/2018 15:18

The Three Chimneys.
On the cheap side there used to be amazing veggie place near us that did the best veggie food I have ever tasted. Just a very small place. Sadly the owner/chef died.
