Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

Anywhere with Tim Allen. Excellent chef.

The French or Grafene in Manchester.

The Three Fishes in Mitton.

New place in Manchester, 20 Stories - only officially opens today I think but pre-launch reviews (from friends who have been, haven't seen any in the media yet) have been pretty good.

Cutesbabasmummy · 28/02/2018 15:20

Another one here for Le Manoir. And out of the UK a restaurant in Vonnas France called Georges Blanc - absolute perfection.

Samantha77hat · 28/02/2018 15:25

Le Gavroche was special, as was Maze

But much as I enjoy it, as we have 2 noisey kids I prefer a decent pub lunch where a main course is under £15, luckily there are a good few round here with decent food

Strokethefurrywall · 28/02/2018 15:35

Agree with La Gavroche
The Mussel Inn in Edinburgh - $6 for half a kilo of mussels in a variety of sauces with endless crusty french bread. There's a reason it's packed ALL THE TIME. Every time we fly back to Scotland we go straight there.

And some village pub on the outskirts of Cheddar in Somerset that used to serve the most amazing steak and stilton pie with puff pastry - I've never eaten in a pub so much (and I used to drive down from London...)

peanutbutter310 · 28/02/2018 15:37

Another Le Manoir fan!

I also love Hand and Flowers. Their set weekday menu is very reasonable it's just a shame you have to book so far in advance!

BestIsWest · 28/02/2018 15:41

Oh yes, monkeysee, the Potted Pig is great.

Slice also deserves a mention.

purpleprincess24 · 28/02/2018 15:50

The Waterside Inn ... been a few times for very special occasions and it is amazing

Le Manoir .. to tell you the truth we were rather disappointed

ScribblyGum · 28/02/2018 15:56

Mr Underhill's in Ludlow, now sadly closed. I will never forget that meal to my dying day.

MacTweedy · 28/02/2018 15:59

@onlyconnect we're booked into Nathan Outlaws in the summer, we're on holiday in Boscastle and going here to celebrate being together for 10 years!

Best Would either be The Chambers of Flavour in London or Couch's in Polperro. Incredible food and amazing value.

TheQueenOfWands · 28/02/2018 16:01

The Champion in Westbury.

Chinese food. Delicious and great service.

An episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer was filmed nearby too so you can have a nice Buffy Nostalgia Fest as you eat.

TheCatsMother44 · 28/02/2018 16:01

Heston Blumenthal's Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental in London.

I know there are lots of restaurants in London I can choose from but I just keep coming back to this one. The food is gorgeous, decor lovely and the staff are really well trained and knowledgeable. The entire experience is lovely and I think it being set in the hotel is an added bonus as it's a beautiful hotel too.

I've been here probably about 6 or so times now so I do need to branch out.....and go to another of his restaurants 😂

cleofatra · 28/02/2018 16:02

No good ones yet so glad of this list.

DrCoconut · 28/02/2018 16:04

Is Winteringham fields worth the hefty price tag? It's near me. Antonio's in Lyme Regis is good. Always had nice food and service there. It's probably mid range price wise. I've never eaten anywhere extravagant.

onlyconnect · 28/02/2018 16:12

MacTweedy I'm sure you'll enjoy Nathan Outlaw if you like fine dining and seafood. We've been three times over the years and loved it each time. The wine guy is great. Be prepared for it to be expensive though.

AhhhhThatsBass · 28/02/2018 16:15

I love Zuma. It's my favourite in the UK (London).
Small/local: Daphne's is lovely despite a proliferation of red cords (winter) Salmon coloured chinos (summer)

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 28/02/2018 16:16

Another vote for L'enclume. Really was by far the best meal I've ever had. Would like to get to the Raby Hunt in the next year or so too, if we can save up!

beguilingeyes · 28/02/2018 16:27

''Fave was Nathan Outlaw's, followed by Hibiscus (sadly closed)''

Claude Bosi (sp?) has taken over at Bibendum. I haven't been there yet but Ioved Hibiscus.

Petrus, Rules, The Ivy, Hawksmoor is always special and has become our special occasion restaurant. San Moritz, the Swiss/Fondue place in Soho is fantastic. Also Katz's Deli in NYC for their Reuben.

We have "the best" Turkish place called Teras near us in Walthamstow on the budget side. Spuntino in Soho is amazing and I still love Wong Kei for cheap and cheerful Chinese food.

beguilingeyes · 28/02/2018 16:40

Just remembered..Londoners. If you like Vietnamese food, there's plce in Rotherhithe..near Canada Water tube..called Café East that is exceptional. Jay Rayner did a piece on cheap eats and this place was no.2 in the country.

AstroGal · 28/02/2018 16:41

The potted pig in Cardiff is fantastic. Great food, excellent gin menu and the lunchtime special can't be beaten.

Whitney168 · 28/02/2018 16:46

Another vote for Le Manoir, unbeatable for setting, food and a very relaxed atmosphere for me.

Second place Midsummer House I would think.

(No urge to go to the Fat Duck, but) Heston's Hinds Head in Bray is lovely. Ditto The Beehive in White Waltham.

Hand & Flowers is great food, but a bit too gastropub for my preference. Love a good pub, love a good restaurant, I obviously just don't like mixing the two.

Going for pubs, The Pot Kiln in Frilsham near Reading is a favourite.

Polarbearflavour · 28/02/2018 17:05

Ducasse at The Dorchester
The Dafodil Cheltenham
Roka
Oxo Tower
Dinner at Heston
STK
Galvin at Windows

latedecember1963 · 28/02/2018 17:09

Nutters Restaurant at Norden, near Rochdale.
Do a standard menu and also a gourmet menu where a meal is created for you having checked for dietary needs. They also do afternoon tea.
It's where we go to celebrate significant birthdays and anniversaries.

Onesmallstepforaman · 28/02/2018 17:17

Prashad-Drighlington
Meze-Darlington
Pipe and Glass-nr Beverley
San Pietro-Scunthorpe
All good, without breaking the bank.

There's quite a few in York I'd like to try.
