Said by my mother who is as left wing as Trotsky, a Corbynista and a self identified feminist.

I did say to her at the time that I thought using the word ‘slag’ was wrong. But my sons were there at the time and although two of them are too young to understand I find it worrying they might internalise that kind of thing.

We have a fractious relationship anyway (she used to call me promiscuous as an older teenager because I’d had a snog and a grope). So I don’t want to cause a lot of friction. But I wonder if I should send her an email saying that isn’t acceptable.

The sort of men who call women slags are the sort of men women generally refuse to have sex with, because these men are mean-minded, charmless and quite often ugly, too. It's like men who want to marry a virgin - they are shit in bed and want a woman too inexperienced to point this out to them.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/02/2018 09:13

It's not an acceptable thing to say about anyone and it's definitely misogynistic

I don't think being a feminist means you can't criticise other women; I do think being a feminist means you probably shouldn't use misogynistic language to describe women in a derogatory way

Agree with both statements. Equally calling women "bitchy cunts" and the attitude and language of user1490607838 are also derogatory and misogynistic.

differentnameforthis · 26/02/2018 09:15

I have always dressed like this ... and the amount of jealous cunts I have had commenting - @user1490607838

oh, so you don't like being called a slag (which I agree with, it's a nasty word and there is no need for it) but you are happy to call people cunts. Some hypocrisy there, no?

*Calling anyone a cunt because they express an (albeit horrible) opinion, makes you nasty & bitter.

I find that women who need to call other women slags, bitchy cunts, etc are perhaps not as confident in their own skin (or clothes) as they are loudly protesting. Why can we not just be happy with who we are, dress how we like and just be nice.

differentnameforthis · 26/02/2018 09:17

Why on earth would bucket fanny be apt for women who dress more provocatively? I am assuming that it infers that the more provocatively dressed a woman is, the more likely she is to "sleep around" and therefore have a loose vagina = the horrible vile term "bucket fanny"

Celticlassie · 26/02/2018 09:22

What a depressing thread. We really don't need men to hate us, when so many women clearly despise women. On the one hand, women are being called 'slags', on the other, 'jealous cunts'. All because of the way you look.

Mabelface · 26/02/2018 09:30

wear what the fuck you want and have sex as much as you want, as long as it's been 2 consenting adults. It's no one else's business what you do.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 26/02/2018 09:33

Decent men do not respect women who dress like this, they really don't.

If they lack respect for women because of how they dress then they are not ‘a decent man’.

My god what a depressing, patriarchy supporting thread.

Trills · 26/02/2018 09:51

I wouldn't say that people who say this are necessarily unattractive.

I would say that they have been conned by the patriarchy into thinking
a - attention from men is important to have
b - other women are your competition for this attention

So it is a form of jealousy. Not "I want to be like that" but "They will get the attention that I have been conditioned into wanting".

Oooeeeerrrrrindeed · 26/02/2018 09:54

It is terrifying to see so many apparently grown, apparently literate indivuduals who quite happily support the hateful notion a woman is only as good as the meaningless fabric put on her.
It's so shallow and self serving. I'd suggest a long hard look in the mirror to check you are actually human and not misogynistic robots. If you use the word slag you're saying so much more about yourself.

Lethaldrizzle · 26/02/2018 09:57

And what should we call men who dress provocatively and have lots of sex?

BoredOnMatLeave · 26/02/2018 10:01

Women who call other women slags are the people that cheapen the rest of us.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 10:04

Those posters using the disgusting ugly language on here say far more about themselves and their horrible minds then any argument they might try and advance.

Who uses terms like slag, bucket fanny or calls other women jealous cunts?

Yeuk thankfully I don’t meet men or women who use ugly terms like this in rl and I don’t want to. Hideous people.

BertrandRussell · 26/02/2018 10:17

Where I live a slag is more than likely to be a dirty person - male or female"

No-that's slut. I don't think slag means that anywhere.

BertrandRussell · 26/02/2018 10:19

But this thread has certainly given me some insight into why feminists get such a hard time on here!

Helmetbymidnight · 26/02/2018 10:19

No-that's slut. I don't think slag means that anywhere.

Yeah, I was a bit puzzled by this. I wondered where she lived.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/02/2018 10:22

Where I live a slag is more than likely to be a dirty person - male or female. Someone who keeps a dirty house and has an unclean appearance.

Isn't that a slattern? Nothing sexual and I've never heard this or any equivalent used to describe a man's housekeeping.

gamerwidow · 26/02/2018 10:27

I feel like I’ve entered an alternative universe. I’m amazed that anyone thinks it’s ok to insult women by calling them slags because they are sexually promiscuous or because of how they dress. Women are should be free to sleep with whoever they chose and where whatever they like without judgement. Behaving like ‘ladies’ is something forced onus by the patriarchy not something we as women should be aiming for. However OP I wouldn’t bother to engage your mum about her ridiculous view she’s not going to change her mind.

Sallystyle · 26/02/2018 10:32

who dye their hair blonde and wear red lipstick and nail varnish, something which I can't take seriously or trust their intelligence.

Then you are missing out on getting to know a lot of great people.

I can't take you seriously and you most certainly don't come across as intelligent yourself with those opinions.

Slag, bucket fanny, jealous cunts... this thread is very sad.

Trills · 26/02/2018 10:33

Red nail varnish is a neutral.

CarefullyDrawnMap · 26/02/2018 10:34

I feel like I've entered an alternative universe Me too. This makes for such depressing reading.
Along with a load of rape-myth victim blaming that I saw at the weekend.
Sometimes just when you think things might be moving forward everything plummets backwards again.

mothertruck3r · 26/02/2018 10:36

What does she think of women who cover themselves up to please men? Is that her idea of feminism?

LemonShark · 26/02/2018 10:40

The whole 'loose vagina' thing for a sexually promiscuous woman doesn't even make any physiological sense. What's the difference to your vagina if you sleep with one man a thousand times or a hundred men ten times each? A dick is a dick. Funny how long term married women who are assumedly sexually active with their husband for years on end never get the 'bucket fanny' comment.

iBiscuit · 26/02/2018 10:42

Yup. Ditto leopard print.
