My £100 tattoo is the wrong tattoo ...aibu to complain?

About 7 years ago I got a tattoo on my wrist of the Chinese symbol “mother”
My mum died when I was a teenager so I had this idea that it would be nice.
A few months ago I started a new job and made friends with a lady from China...she informed me my mum tattoo wasn’t the correct symbol for mum and in fact it didn’t mean anything.
I’m so upset, would you go back to the shop?

Tattoos are so ugly and cheap looking, it makes everyone who has one look like a complete chav imo.

The stories behind them are really interesting though.

I love asking about intricate tattoos and hearing often amazing stories, so in that regard they are definitely personalised 'art' special to the person so in that regard, I don't think it matters what the reality of your tattoo means as it's the story behind it that counts.

UgandanKnuckles · 17/02/2018 12:22

onto plums = you'll get fuck all

I didn't realise it wasn't a common phrase... Shock

Gosh it's going to be another thread of "tattoo bingo" isn't it?

Yes Hmm

SimplyNigella · 17/02/2018 12:50

Is this reminding anyone else of the Alfie/Alife tattoo debacle from years ago? I often wonder whether she got it covered up.

LucyMorningStar · 17/02/2018 12:51

Ahhh OP, what a cliche. Just get it covered up with something lovely if it bothers you. Forget about going back to the original tattoo place, you'll be onto plums indeed.

The poster who says everyone with a tattoo looks like a chav - just think of a nice way to tell somebody to piss off and pretend I said that to you.

NotACleverName · 17/02/2018 12:53

Wow, what a groundbreaking and original thought! Do fuck off, dear.

After seven years I doubt you'll get anywhere, OP, and YWBU for getting something tattooed on you in a language you don't understand.

amusedbush · 17/02/2018 13:01

Oh, fuck off. I have dozens of brightly coloured neo trad tattoos including a sleeve, shoulder-to-shoulder chest piece and both legs almost covered. I look anything but chavvy.

I also have a great student-facing job in a university where I've been promoted twice in recent years so it hasn't held me back professionally.

Gosh, I’m sure those who have tattoos as part of their culture, such as the Polynesians, would love to hear your intelligent, well argued views on why they look like ‘chavs’. Get off your high horse, you silly person.

EdmundCleverClogs · 17/02/2018 13:17

Ffs this is in The Mirror, suspiciously quick as well.

I have tattoos. Some I hate and some I love. I hate hearing about the “story” behind other people’s tattoos. Even worse is hearing someone talk about the tattoos they plan to get and why. Oh you’re getting yours sons name? Cool. Why are you telling me? It’s hardly original. Am I supposed to be impressed? And I speak as someone who has my children’s names! Grin I just don’t tell people and expect them to be in awe of my originality.

PhelanThePain · 17/02/2018 13:20

some tattoos are ugly and cheap looking (some of mine are) and some tattoos are mind blowingly stunning. And very far from cheap (none of mine sadly Grin)

ineedwine99 · 17/02/2018 13:20

OP can you get it lasered? If its black it shouldn’t take many sessions, i’m having a lot of mine lasered off and the black bits had gone after the 3rd session

JuneBuggy · 17/02/2018 13:26

“Tattooists aren’t foreign language experts. It’s your responsibility to check the meaning of these things I’m afraid.”

This. Some of them aren’t very good at English either! I once saw a photo on Facebook of a girl’s new tattoo. She was so pleased with it and I didn’t have the heart to tell her. It read “I’d rather of loved and lost then never of loved at all” Shock

Shadow666 · 17/02/2018 13:28

Pic or it didn’t happen!

I have a friend that got a Japanese sleeve done by a very famous tattoo artist who did tattoos for the yakuza. It was definitely a work of art.

ToastyFingers · 17/02/2018 13:33

Oh, look! A Working Class person with tattoos! Let's all sneer at her!

Very funny! I'm working class and quite heavily tattooed and I wouldn't have anything tattooed in a language I didn't understand. That said, I have some shoddy work from my teenage years and I don't regret a single one of them. I love my body, every inch of it.

The tattoo regretters seem to be people who just went along with the trend, and it's sad that genuine tattoo enthusiasts get lumped into the same box.

OP: You and your mum loved eachother very much, even if you regret it now, you got the tattoo out of love, and that shouldn't change because it isn't necessarily correct.

Be kinder to yourself.

FancyNewBeesly · 17/02/2018 13:36

I guess cultural appropriation has its downsides, huh?

But yeah.... anything but Tattoo Fixers. Everything is massive, hideous and so bloody dark. That one guy should rename himself Scratch.

Depending on what it is and what the actual symbol is, the chance of you being able to cover it with the correct symbol are miniscule. If you want it changed, find an artist who specialises in cover ups (very difficult to do well, especially with something like a black symbol), and Work with them to design something that will actually cover it.

ChipVinegar · 17/02/2018 13:47

Yes OP you'd be unreasonable to go back 7 years on but you aren't unreasonable to be very upset about it

ShanghaiDiva · 17/02/2018 13:51

Ignore most of the comments on here as the corrections are wrong. One poster had suggested that a form of ma is correct, but they have given you the form of ma which means question word.
Characters will vary depending on whether they are traditional or standard Chinese. 妈妈 is simplified Chinese for mum - mama.
The first part of the character - the radical means female and the second part provides the sound - ma.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 17/02/2018 14:22

The statute of limitations is six years, so you're out of luck for taking any action against them. That doesn't mean that I think you'd have been successful a year ago - I don't think you would have a claim anyway; they are very likely to have diligent processes to ensure that you take final responsibility - but you could have tried.

Fluffyears · 17/02/2018 14:30

A year once was telling us all at uni his new Chinese tattoo said ‘honour bravery and family’or some such other wank, one of the Chinese students then laughed and said he read it as ‘a fool and his money are easily parted’. My friend got a tattoo and I admired it and said it looks like a funky number 5 ‘well it’s not it’s an Ohm!’ Oh ok apart from the fact my Hindu best mate says it isn’t.

SteamyBeignets · 17/02/2018 14:33

I find this hillarious! If it were me I would find it funny and wouldn't get upset over it. It does amaze me that people would get something permanent on a whim, and some under the influence!

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 17/02/2018 15:11

YABU to yo I to a tattoo shop and pick a tattoo of the wall- and you were certainly ripped off if they charged you £100 for a wrist tattoo! How long did it take?!

I have a tattoo in Sinhala, my tattooist made me sign a disclaimer to confirm that I had it checked out and I knew what it said.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 17/02/2018 15:14

@Dljlr look at 'engrish' online. Lots of fun!
