My £100 tattoo is the wrong tattoo ...aibu to complain?

Llisadfd · 17/02/2018 10:21

About 7 years ago I got a tattoo on my wrist of the Chinese symbol “mother”
My mum died when I was a teenager so I had this idea that it would be nice.
A few months ago I started a new job and made friends with a lady from China...she informed me my mum tattoo wasn’t the correct symbol for mum and in fact it didn’t mean anything.
I’m so upset, would you go back to the shop?

OP posts:
flumpybear · 17/02/2018 11:44

I think that you should decide tomeither get it removed and have a different tattooo or whatever you want to do to remember your mum
Don't get upset about people on the board they're not being very tactful Considering the circumstances

Dljlr · 17/02/2018 11:47

In a Japanese mall I saw t-shirts that said Frying Pan on them. My Japanese friend looked in the label and said it was claiming to say 'imagination'. So I think this sort of thing works two ways!

DotCottonDotCom · 17/02/2018 11:48

Don't go on Tattoo Fixers unless you want your tiny tattoo covered up by a foot long heavily inked dragon or similar

Or a skull or rose. FML. Some of the stuff ive seen on there... don't even get me started on the portraits they have attempted!
So many bad reviews from those who have appeared in the show too - they dont get much choice!

InsomniacAnonymous · 17/02/2018 11:48

"I think after seven years you'll be onto plums in any case."

Onto plums? Confused

TrustNaeFuckerEver · 17/02/2018 11:50

I think 'onto plums' means you'll get feck all in terms of a refund.

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2018 11:50

Oh, look! A Working Class person with tattoos! Let's all sneer at her!

Has the OP stated which class she is, or have you just assumed she must be working class, because she has a tattoo?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/02/2018 11:51

I read about a man once who had NO REGERTS in huge letters down his forearm.

JustVent · 17/02/2018 11:51

£100 for one Chinese symbol?

What a rip off!

KadabrasSpoon · 17/02/2018 11:51

I can read kanji so if you can find a picture of the symbol on the Internet happy to check it for you.

My friend had 'love' but there are many symbols for different types of love. Actually one love is the symbols for mother and child combined so it might be that your tattoo can be adjusted.

As PP said there are lots of hilarious English t shirts in Japan. I once saw a viral post of a shop that said "fuckin sale"

panjandrumpyjamas · 17/02/2018 11:51

In japanese it is お母さん or 母親 。The original pictureogram was a pair of boobies ;)

If you love your tattoo or it makes you smile keep the tat.

chocatoo · 17/02/2018 11:52

Seeing as you've said it affects your job prospects, I'd consider getting it removed. I would invest in a piece of jewellery and remember your mum when you wear it...even nicer is to wear a piece of her jewellery or have some jewellery of hers incorporated into it.

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2018 11:52

As for going back to the tattoo artist, that's a bit like going back to a shop after 7 years because they gave you the wrong change.

It won't get you anywhere I'm sure.

But as PP's have said, it reminds you of your mum and that's all that matters.

insancerre · 17/02/2018 11:53

Thinking about it there must be plenty of people in China with meaningless English words tattooed on them

KadabrasSpoon · 17/02/2018 11:53

Is this it OP?

I know someone that had the chinese symbol for woman on her fanjo.... she loved it until she showed it to someone chinese and they absolutely roared with laughter. She no longer shaves that area

What does it actually say??

YoloSwaggins · 17/02/2018 11:56

Oh China is FULL of shit English translations

I saw a T-shirt with "Be weird, become a witow, stay crat, don't give a damn" written down it in capitals

gobbynorthernbird · 17/02/2018 12:04

Could be worse... (and, no, I didn't swipe right)

My £100 tattoo is the wrong tattoo ...aibu to complain?
robertaplumkin · 17/02/2018 12:06

Why would you get a symbolic tattoo that had so little symbolism to YOU.to pick something generic off a wall for your MOTHER. bizarre. after 7 years of blissful ignorance (not to mention the rest of your life...) YABU.

FlouncyDoves · 17/02/2018 12:07

lol.

Definitely complain and return it.

Rainboho · 17/02/2018 12:07

Some of you are being really mean! I have lots of tattoos, and when I was young I started with basic flash- I don’t do that now. I have three similar Chinese symbols (oh the 90s!) dotted on me, I cant even remember what they were supposed to mean when I got them 😳

I couldn’t actually care if they say egg foo yung or slapper. They are just part of my life. I even have a dolphin. 😱

TinklyLittleLaugh · 17/02/2018 12:08

DS is learning Mandarin in school and obsessed with trying to decipher Chinese symbols. We were in a queue recently and he reckoned the man in front of us had "love" and "mother" on his neck. So not all Chinese tattoos are fake unless the bit he couldn't decipher said something like "I have fucked your mother

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/02/2018 12:09

Did you take the symbol to the tattooist? Or did he/she source it for you? Either way, it is too late now, but sadly, it really is up to you to check.

I agree with Mysteryfairy - it was in honour of your DM, so you should continue to treasure it. Apart from anything, it is unique, and even it is meaningless in terms of a translation, it represents your love for her.

(And wear long sleeves and a broad watch strap when you go for interviews . . . Smile )

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/02/2018 12:14

I have several large tattoos ranging from a Japanese sleeve

fanny - I have seen a couple of these. They were amazing!

bettytaghetti · 17/02/2018 12:15

lol Tinkly!
