My £100 tattoo is the wrong tattoo ...aibu to complain?

Llisadfd · 17/02/2018 10:21

About 7 years ago I got a tattoo on my wrist of the Chinese symbol “mother”
My mum died when I was a teenager so I had this idea that it would be nice.
A few months ago I started a new job and made friends with a lady from China...she informed me my mum tattoo wasn’t the correct symbol for mum and in fact it didn’t mean anything.
I’m so upset, would you go back to the shop?

But yeah.... anything but Tattoo Fixers. Everything is massive, hideous and so bloody dark. That one guy should rename himself Scratch.

VladmirsPoutine · 17/02/2018 15:23

@JuneBuggy That is horrific. I get irate when I read that sort of thing on MN, let alone having it tattooed on me! Ye gads!
I do have many tattoos mind, and planning a couple more. Can't say it's held me back at work.

FancyNewBeesly · 17/02/2018 15:25

Glad you agree Vlad - that guy is one scratchy motherfucker. I wouldn’t let him draw on me in biro.

JuneBuggy · 17/02/2018 16:12

Vlad, it gets worse - it was round her belly button in a heart shape Shock

TeddyBee · 17/02/2018 19:12

I have two small tattoos and they were both £70 in a reputable tattoo parlour - so £100 doesn’t seem wildly expensive unless I’m missing something? Admittedly my place is in Soho, so has high overheads but...

JacquesHammer · 17/02/2018 19:25

On the high side for generic flash off the wall small enough to be on a wrist.

LemonShark · 17/02/2018 19:33

It's really odd you don't have a picture of the tattoo OP, if it's so big it's caused problems in jobs then I'd have thought it appears on at least some photos taken of you in the past few years. Or that you could work out how to take one and post it now. When PP are actively trying to help you and find a way to see if there's any chance it is accurate and ease your distress.

It's sad as this sort of thread is sometimes concocted for everyone to have a good laugh at people whose tattoos in a different language are incorrect :(

Put it this way. You now have created a Chinese character that represents your mum. Not anyone's mum or the idea of a mum. But your mum. That's now her name in Chinese :)

amusedbush · 17/02/2018 19:34

TeddyBee

Most places I know of (best friend is a tattoo artist so I know a lot!) are £80 an hour for large designs and a lower set price for flash. £70 is a lot for a wrist-sized flash piece.

LemonShark · 17/02/2018 19:38

Although that may be small comfort when she isn't Chinese and neither are you and she wasn't especially (that I know of) passionate about Chinese culture or language, or her favourite cuisine wasn't Chinese (unless it was)!

I genuinely accidentally offended a colleague a few years ago when she was showing me her Chinese character tattoo of her boyfriend's name and I said it was nice and asked if he was Chinese and which part he came from Grin she thought I was being a dick on purpose but back then I'd never heard of people getting tattoos of someone's name in a totally irrelevant language with no meaning to them so as she wasn't Chinese I assumed he must be or they at least met there.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/02/2018 19:59

LemonShark the OP said she doesn't have the paperclip icon to attach photos. This has happened to someone else on here recently, and he's a longstanding member.

Jobjobjob · 17/02/2018 20:59

I thought everyone new that Chinese tattoo symbols never meant what they were supposed to? I mean only an idiot would get a tattoo on their body with no idea what it actually says.

Harsh!

I also thought that only an idiot would say new and not knew!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/02/2018 21:11

My kanji tattoo actually does mean what I think, Japanese people tend to read it out loud when they see it.

GrannyGrissle · 17/02/2018 21:30

Go back after7 years and demand to know why it is wrong/a refund and do please let us know how you get on OP Grin

CabinFeverShorts · 17/02/2018 21:31

One of my favourite terrible huuuge cover-ups on Tattoo Fixers....

Jayfee · 17/02/2018 21:34

Just think of it as a beautiful reminder of your mother. I am sure it is an interesting shape and nowadays small tatoos are unlikely to affect job prospects as they are so popular.

MaisyPops · 17/02/2018 21:41

I totally agree.
Whether that's what the OP wants to be reminded of is another matter.

Look into getting a cover up tattoo OP take it as a lesson on lingusitoc tattoos.

FancyNewBeesly · 17/02/2018 21:55

Holy god - look at the line work on those feathers at the top. How do they get away with this?!

DotCottonDotCom · 17/02/2018 22:02

Wow they should be mortified!
The Gaga portrait shocked me tbh. Jay done this one

Is he blind?

You wouldn’t get away with that shit on Ink Master Grin

turnaroundbrighteyes · 17/02/2018 23:53

Might be wrong, but thought that under the new consumer rights act if the goods (or service - tattoo) were faulty at the time of purchase, which they were if you were told it said mother then you still have the right to a full refund. Yes, the 7 years is a bit long, but only just finding out give you a case.

No harm in going back to the tattooist, researching your rights then potentially taking to mcol(money claim online - small caims)

Pinkvoid · 18/02/2018 00:16

Not sure how you could be arsed with the rigmarole of chasing up a refund seven years down the line. You’ll actually have a hard time proving you got it from them for starters, they definitely won’t remember you!

If I were you I’d either have it covered up or laserd

Pinkvoid · 18/02/2018 00:17

Fuck that sent too soon. Lasered ... and perhaps get a new tattoo or something else (jewellery?) to signify your mum.

LemonShark · 19/02/2018 10:43

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks There are plenty of ways to share an image without attaching it directly to a post. Imgur and similar sites for example.

OP has evaporated anyway.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/02/2018 11:25

We're not all tech wizards.

LemonShark · 19/02/2018 11:26

It's not coding 😂 If a poster can navigate here, set up an account and post they can find a way to share an image if it's relevant and they want to.
