About 7 years ago I got a tattoo on my wrist of the Chinese symbol “mother”
My mum died when I was a teenager so I had this idea that it would be nice.
A few months ago I started a new job and made friends with a lady from China...she informed me my mum tattoo wasn’t the correct symbol for mum and in fact it didn’t mean anything.
I’m so upset, would you go back to the shop?

£100 seven years ago? Blimey how big is it?

[Crosses getting discreet tattoo off bucket list - was # 68 anyway]

Lucked · 17/02/2018 10:37

I can’t believe in seven years you have never checked it out or googled it, I can’t believe that you didn’t google it in 2010.

The most popular symbol for mother seems to look a bit like a domino from my google search.

EdmundCleverClogs · 17/02/2018 10:37

*I should add by ‘Chinese speaking’ I obviously meant Mandarin, Cantonese or any other language variations in China. A bit ignorant of me to lump it all in as ‘Chinese’.

Fekko · 17/02/2018 10:37

In 7 years no one has said this to you. So I guess if it’s not even a proper character then it’s something unique?

Try to think of it as just a unique symbol to commemorate your mum. Lucky it’s not rude or says something like ‘98 bus stop’.

Maybe your mum would have laughed (my late mum would have been very amused).

Lucked · 17/02/2018 10:39

Actually you have got seven years of enjoyment out of this symbol dedicated to your mother, not terrible value for money.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 17/02/2018 10:41

I'm not certain but I think there might be restrictions on new posters uploading pictures.

Valentinesfart · 17/02/2018 10:41

I'm not convinced this is true, but yes. If they did put the wrong tatoo then yes, I think you should go back and ask for it to be covered up. Least they can do. Though personally, I probably wouldn't trust them again!

Try "Tatoo fixers". It's just the sort of thing they'd do.

If it reminds you of your mum, does it really matter?

People are being very mean on here.

I have to agree with viques that it must be a huge tattoo to have cost £100 7 years ago.

I had a small, discreet inner wrist tattoo done after my mum died and it's easily covered by long sleeves if necessary.

RubberJohnny · 17/02/2018 10:44

If it has significance and you had it sone for your mum does it really matter what it says? If you think it's hindering job prospects, maybe get it lasered off and get one er else which means more?
But no, you cannot go back and complain!

greendale17 · 17/02/2018 10:44

. I think your colleague was mean to tell you.

^I disagree completely

StealthPolarBear · 17/02/2018 10:46

Yes. If to you it represents your mother does it matter?

Samcro · 17/02/2018 10:47

oh the joy of getting the wrong tattoo.
I have words on my wrist, song ones. was annoyed to find out that even though I double checked the lyrics.....he doesn't sing one of the words I have,
no problem as I think my version is better.
your tatt is now personal too you, just enjoy it (but 100 pounds that is a rip off)

StealthPolarBear · 17/02/2018 10:48

What is it samcro I'm really curious now!

OnionKnight · 17/02/2018 10:48

After seven years you have no come back, it was up to you to ensure that it was accurate anyway.

SillyMoomin · 17/02/2018 10:48

Why didn’t you research it yourself?? Google existed 7 years ago Confused

Trills · 17/02/2018 10:49

I like the idea of having a tattoo of improved song lyrics

italiancortado · 17/02/2018 10:49

I’m so upset, would you go back to the shop?

What would you be looking for in way of resolution?

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 17/02/2018 10:51

Scrap the thinking that it’s mother in Chinese and think of it as a nice picture to represent your mother. You liked it when you got it and nothing has changed really. This is the first Chinese person you have met that’s read it in 7 years. I wouldn’t worry. Maybe add a little something to it to change it a bit but the thought for your Mum is still there.

Llisadfd · 17/02/2018 10:52

A cover up of the correct tattoo maybe.
I don’t know.

After seven years, are you having a laugh?

SilverHairedCat · 17/02/2018 10:53

Do NOT go on Tattoo Fixers. The cover ups are abysmal, and the stories about the realities of the show are shocking. One of the men can do good portraits, but the other is a disgrace and should not be in the industry. The woman is ok, but is only really mediocre.

Anyway, you live and learn. Find a reputable tattooist and discuss your options.

WeAllHaveWings · 17/02/2018 10:56

Yes. If to you it represents your mother does it matter?

^ this. Unless you mum or you are actually Chinese (which I assume not or you would have known it wasn't correct) its just a symbol so what does it matter?

To get it on my wrist too as it’s affected me with jobs too.

That is irrelevant to whether the symbol is correct. Tattoo regret is amazingly common.

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/02/2018 10:57

Try again to put the picture up, in case someone on here can read it. It might mean something close.
