I suspect it's because many aged less than 40 realise that they won't 'enjoy' the life-style that some pensioners have now. Rather than agitating and organising to get something done about it, they'd rather sit and moan jealously.

YANBU, I inwardly groan when I read another post slagging off anyone over the age of 50 for having such an easy life and living it up in their big houses with massive pensions.

Its because people in need are being told theres no money to help them, while they watch pensioners on a much higher income and with big assets being given the free bus passes they are told are not available for them. Its not difficult to see why they are not happy.

that is a thead talking about the issues of the free bus pass and the problems it's created and how one section of society are looked after much better.

I think some people like inequality, if they are the beneficiary.

I'm with you, OP. Most people here don't seem to appreciate that for many of these "living it up" pensioners, much if not most of their earlier life was spent living in conditions that would be considered unimaginable today. I don't begrudge them having a bit of comfort in their later life one bit.

Because pensioners appear to be immune to means testing when lots of them are rich. Not all, of course. Some are very poor.

But it is insane that my parents who own a million quid house, good pension income and are still working in well paid jobs part time get a free tube and bus pass and a contribution to their heating bills when it is cold.
They would much rather that was spent on someone old and poor who actually needed it and the tube pass went to some apprentice on 5quid an hour to help them get to work.

Because they are a useful voting block, pensioners as a group get a lot of things that aren't economically justified or efficient.
Means testing is a blunt tool but I went poor pensioners to get more and rich pensioners to get less. I would also back the previously proposed "death tax" to pay for care - I want my parents to get great care if they need it, not to get substandard care so they can pass on more to me. So I think pensioner's housing wealth should not be sacrosanct either

I don't think MN generally begrudge pensioners, I think there's a discomfort at certain privileged people who don't help others.

People who keep all their wealth and good fortune to themselves whilst standing back and allowing family members to struggle.

I'm alright jack is a very unpleasant attitude, not just exclusive to pensioners I may add.

will they need to fund their health care/nursing home care?

But what can be done about it? The last few decades have been a huge pyramid scheme that's now falling apart. The current 50 to 70 somethings have had advantages and a lifestyle that is going to be unavailable to under 40s, who can't buy a family house on one wage, will retire much later than current pensioners and face travelling for hours because they can't afford to live near where they work and there's no work near where they live. And it's a lot harder and more expensive to rent these days.

oth those with money wont be able to take it with them and will have to sell their house to fund their care if necessary

When people in this country are struggling and not receiving help then rich pensioners shouldn't be getting things like free bus passes. Saying that isn't attacking pensioners.

which is why this thread isnt limited to the bus pass scenario, it's the general bad feeling towards the retired home owners, who take holidays and buy cars, that annoys me
