Do you take your 12/13 year olds phone away at night?

Just that ... parents of 12-13 year olds Do you take your child's phone off then at night?
We take ours off him at 9pm (more like 10 or 10.30pm as we often only remember when we are going to bed). He says no one else's mum and dad do this.
Are we too strict? Or is it usual to allow overnight phone in room at this age?

No. But at 9:30 we say goodnight and phones go off. He uses it as an alarm and there's never been any problems. He's almost 15 and I know he's well sleep by 9:45

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/02/2018 20:59

Yes, all devices are left downstairs overnight.

WhooooAmI24601 · 12/02/2018 21:02

Yes, nobody's iPods/ipads/iphones go upstairs because it's just not necessary at this age. He's 12 and doesn't look at his phone much, it's just for school/safety when he's out and about.

booellesmum · 12/02/2018 21:03

DD1 aged 16 and DD2 aged 13.
I've never taken phones off them but they are good at self regulating.
DD2 very rarely uses her phone anyway and it's often out of charge. She spends more time watching anime on her iPad but switches it off herself when it's time to sleep.
If I had kids who would be on them all night I'd confiscate at night though.

DC's electricals go away at 8pm in our house. Dc are 12 and 13.

Couldn't give a flying fuck about other parents and their kids.

No one (adult or child) has phones upstairs.

AdmiralSirArchibald · 12/02/2018 21:10

Safeguarding lead in a secondary school. The things I've seen on phones, some of children as young as 11, has firmly convinced me that phones should stay downstairs. Many photos/ videos shared and unkind bullying social media appears to happen after bed time.

lashestans · 12/02/2018 21:11

Everyone who leaves theirs downstairs at night... how do you get up in the morning? I use mine as an alarm

Kay1966 · 12/02/2018 21:13

lash
An actual alarm clock

LizzieSiddal · 12/02/2018 21:15

Yes, when they were that age we all (Dh, me and 2 dds) left our phones in the kitchen, over night.

LizzieSiddal · 12/02/2018 21:16

We used alarm clocks too.

Littlefish · 12/02/2018 21:16

Yes. Dd is 13 and leaves her phone downstairs at night.

GrannyMac2018 · 12/02/2018 21:18

DS is 12... I take his phone at 9pm.
I don't trust him not to wake up and watch YouTube through the night and also he has some friends who seem to message past that time when I think he needs a bit of chill time to nod off

heymammy · 12/02/2018 21:18

I take my 14 yr old's away after I've said goodnight, so about 10.30pm, except at the weekend and during the school holidays.

MyKingdomForBrie · 12/02/2018 21:18

I wish someone would take mine, I have no willpower and mumsnet costs me sleep.

cherrypopsicle · 12/02/2018 21:19

Yes She has to leave it downstairs to vharge. DH caught her texting at 2am on a school night once so the next day I bought her an alarm clock as that was the only reason she "needed" it at night

pilates · 12/02/2018 21:19

13 yr old yes
Nearly 17 yr old no because she is sensible and self regulates

Lollypop701 · 12/02/2018 21:21

Have a look at OurPact... kids have phones but no social media/you tube from 9pm

BewareOfDragons · 12/02/2018 21:21

Alarm clocks. They work very well and pre-date mobile phones by years! Wink

TinselAngel · 12/02/2018 21:23

My DD of 13 isn't allowed any devices in her room over night.

TheMadGardener · 12/02/2018 21:29

My DDs are 13 and 11. They have to put their phones and their joint tablet in mine and DH''s bedroom overnight. Both of them have friends who are up till all hours on social media and fall asleep at school. I used to do Internet safety workshops when I taught primary and most of the cyber bullying incidents happened overnight.

They also have to show me they're up to date with homework before playing on phones/tablet in evenings. (I am hardline parent, Dh is softer! :) ) But in school hols the rules do get relaxed a bit.

Comeonmommy · 12/02/2018 21:30

Both my girls have mobiles and 1 has an iPod too, they are 10 & 11. They know the rules, they are allowed them upstairs until they break my trust.

GothMummy · 12/02/2018 21:32

Yes of course I do. DS (12) has no need of his phone when he is supposed to be sleeping.

missmapp · 12/02/2018 21:34

Yes. He leaves it downstairs to charge. Never been an issue

stressedoutfred · 12/02/2018 21:40

I have a 14 year old and I don't take his phone, I would if I thought he was using it after he's meant to have gone to bed, but I know he doesn't ( as I do random checks!)

Cataline · 12/02/2018 21:41

DS is 10 and his phone stays downstairs to charge. He'd not be able to resist the temptation to go back on it once I leave his room at night!
