AIBU?

To think these parents should be hauled over the coals for this

A teenage girl was given highlights for her birthday by her mum - subtle ones - and when she returned home from a visit to see her father and stepmother they had cut off all of her hair as they disapproved. She has literally about 1-2 cm of hair length left on her head. She had long hair before.

AIBU to think this is a form of child abuse to do this to somebody against their will??? What a cruel, hateful thing thing to do to a child.

They'd be waking up one day with bald patches.
I've threatened my daughter with a short hair cut but I'd never actually do it.

Would people really be suspended from work for giving her hair cut to their kids? Most parents of screaming toddlers would be out of a job if that was true!

I would have to seriously consider suspending a member of staff who had this allegation made against them.
Given the age of the child it has the potential to be a legitimate claim of abuse and in my field people who commit child abuse are not appropriate employees

Can some people really not see why toddlers aren't the same as teenage girls?

I still say that the facebook notoriety is worse, the poor kid is being discussed by all and sundry probably against her wishes and god knows how much her school friends are bullying her.
Nobody is thinking of her wishes and whether she actually wants the world looking at her

Portia We don't know that though. She may have agreed or instigated the FB posts. She has support from all over the world. This is how it works these days, teenagers have never lived in a world where lives were not publicised in this way.

My dd says she'd be horrified if I put pics of her hairdo online and she's 19

Portia What has your teen got to do with anything?

What has anyone got to do with it

Jeez, people are so narrow minded. They or someone they know wouldn't do something so suddenly the whole world wouldn't do it lol!

I'm not narrow minded at all I just think the whole thing is a hoax

..allegations is the word here . What happens to innocent until PROVEN guilty hey.

I might not agree with the father, but it's a haircut. people are completely over-reacting

The salon who cut the hair, the mother, the fire station where the stepmother and father work/ed are all within 20-odd minutes drive of each other. I suspect that the fire service people know more than has been said in the press, enough to warrant a suspension in their eyes even if is is just because the fire station would be plagued by press and people baying for blood. People are threatening to cut the niece's (the hairdresser) hair off and the stepmother's. Perhaps it is a safety measure.

It's a forced, severe haircut intended to punish and humiliate. It's a haircut in the same way tar and feathers are just messy play.

Tarra

Innocent until proven guilty is obviously more than "extremely important" in a court of law.

But it doesn't really matter in the court of public opinion. Or when it concerns the image of a company or an institution. or when certain allegations might cast doubt on a person's suitabilty as a fire fighter....

I think if the daughter decides she doesn't want to see her dad again for quite some time and possibly ever, then she should be allowed to make that decision.

Shocking, shaming abusive treatment. I hope they face charges for assault.

I don't know about America, but in the UK, suspension is a neutral act. It doesn't mean the person has necessarily done something wrong, but it means an allegation has been made and it would not be appropriate for them to be at work until the investigation has been carried out.

If someone is accused of child abuse or assault, that would be fair grounds for a suspension.

I’m not very good with Facebook. So I can’t work out how to see a picture of her without her face obscured. Does she look ok? It looks like such an unflattering style.
