To think pasta is rubbish?

It's sloppy, tasteless and not particularly good for you. So what's the point in it?

Pasta and meatballs
Spag bol
Tagliatelle
Tortellini
Lasagna

They can all sod off, there are much better dinners.

I also (without any nutritional knowledge at all) think a potato must be better as it comes straight from the ground so therefore less processed = better.

Mash
Dophinouise
Chips
Clearly superior!!

YABU. Wheat and rice pasta are lush. So versatile.

You can have them German way (spaetzle anyone?), Asian way (wheat or rice pasta, pad thai, noodles, etc.), Italian way, Middle-Eastern way (with lentils, sumac, or as couscous of course).

Twinkie1 · 07/02/2018 07:13

Italians don't rate fresh pasta above dried pasta, that's nonsense. It depends on the sauce you're using as to which you'd choose.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 07/02/2018 07:23

I'm not a massive fan of fresh pasta, as it's often "too pasta-y" and takes over the dish.

I don't care for tortellini, but then unlike tortellini (the MNer) I've never had them made by an Italian nonna. Wink which if I have recognised her correctly, she will have!

It's funny that the way a lot of people talk about pasta on this thread is exactly the way Italians talk about potatoes.

LizardMonitor · 07/02/2018 07:33

“Mmm pasta with margarine smile”

What is that in Italian?

joystir59 · 07/02/2018 07:35

To me dried pasta and fresh pasta are two entirely different foods. Love the latter, would not voluntarily eat the former
Snobby. If you were hungry you'd eat dried pasta

Sweetpea55 · 07/02/2018 07:41

My DH makes his own pasta.. Delicious and not soppy or tasteless

PickAChew · 07/02/2018 08:49

I don't have over pasta, mostly because white pasta bungs me up but the texture of wholemeal is all wrong, but I do enjoy it, occasionally. A decent bronze die pasta is so much nicer than basics stuff. It's usually made with a harder wheat than cheap pasta, which makes it more chewy without actually being undercooked and has a rougher texture do you need less of it in relation to sauce.

It needs a sauce, though. I do find it unpleasant if it's just tossed in butter or an oily dressing.

PickAChew · 07/02/2018 08:49

Have = rave

Igneococcus · 07/02/2018 08:56

dp doesn't eat any pasta at all to the utter amazement of most people.
He is pretty adventurous otherwise, actively seeks out unusual fruit and veg but he can't stand pasta. He also eats noodles in pho or laksa-type soups but only if they are the round type, not the flat ones.

bluebells1 · 07/02/2018 08:57

YABVVVVVVVU Grin Pasta is THE best carb.

ShutYoFace · 07/02/2018 08:58

Fresh pasta is so much better than the cheap plasticy stuff if you can afford it

If you can afford fresh pasta, why don't you buy decent dried pasta like de cecco or barilla instead of cheap stuff? Although if you eating plastic pasta that might be your problem.

I don't think brits really get pasta.

MissWilmottsGhost · 07/02/2018 13:42

Pasta is fab.

As are potatoes, rice, bread, couscous etc.....I love carbs. One of my favourite meals is a potato and veg curry which I eat with rice and nan bread. It's soooo good.

Have you been eating that quick-cook pasta, OP? I picked it up once by mistake and thought Oh well it'll taste the same.

It didn't. It was rank.

I still don't understand what the supermarket did to make it so awful, and normal pasta only takes 10 minutes to cook anyway so why does it need to be quicker? Confused

10thingsIhateAboutTheDailyMail · 07/02/2018 17:53

Shutyoface, imo Barilla is the best out there.

I favour Barilla over "fresh" supermarket pasta

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 07/02/2018 17:56

I like Garofalo. Mainly because there's so many different shapes.

I have a bag of Barilla cheese tortellini in the cupboard though. I'm quite tempted to have it for my dinner...

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 07/02/2018 17:57

I’m really fussy about pasta. I think it is rubbish, EXCEPT for spaghetti and linguini, which I really like.

Believeitornot · 07/02/2018 17:58

We only buy decent dried pasta and sometimes fresh. Love the stuff.

usernameunavailable · 07/02/2018 17:59

I love pasta 🍝

FlyTipper · 07/02/2018 18:00

I you like pasta, the ONLY dried past to buy us Barilla. The top brand for Italians. Also while we're at it: Lavazza is the top Italian brand of coffee and it is fantastic!

helensburgh · 07/02/2018 18:04

Think mumsnet folks are forgetting everyone has different tastes.
Some people like pasta some don't.

Lweji · 07/02/2018 18:05

I think you mean the OP, Helen.

Mrstumbletap · 07/02/2018 18:14

I think this thread proves the love for pasta is about 80/20 in favour of pasta lovers.

It's the same in my house, DS's favourite dinner is spag bol, and DH loves pasta. Oh it would be so much easier if I did too.

I eat it, but my mouth gets so bored Grin

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 07/02/2018 18:17

YABU. I love pasta as equally as I love spuds.

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 07/02/2018 18:17

Oh now potatoes! They are probably my favourite food. Definitely my favourite carb.

ShutYoFace · 07/02/2018 18:23

I you like pasta, the ONLY dried past to buy us Barilla. The top brand for Italians. Also while we're at it: Lavazza is the top Italian brand of coffee and it is fantastic!

I disagree, my family favour de cecco and illy, which are favourites to many Italians. But barilla and lavazza are also excellent.

MikeUniformMike · 07/02/2018 18:26

It's bland and nutritionally poor. It's ok in lasagne.
