To think pasta is rubbish?

It's sloppy, tasteless and not particularly good for you. So what's the point in it?

Pasta and meatballs
Spag bol
Tagliatelle
Tortellini
Lasagna

They can all sod off, there are much better dinners.

I also (without any nutritional knowledge at all) think a potato must be better as it comes straight from the ground so therefore less processed = better.

Mash
Dophinouise
Chips
Clearly superior!!

YABVU. I live on pasta which is why I'm fat- and wouldn't know what to do without it.

Tricolour pasta with lots of cheese and peas is objectively speaking the best comfort food.

And it's better than rice because it doesn't fuse itself to the bottom of the pan while cooking.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 06/02/2018 22:12

Ok so firstly Italians eat loads of dried pasta!! Secondly you're probably not salting the water enough. Pasta should be cooked in "water as salty as the med". Then it tastes amazing. Just with oil and garlic!! Thirdly it has lots of b vitamins and is also low gi, which means slow release of glucose to the system. Bread and potatoes are high gi (fast release)

So there.

hushnowthanks · 06/02/2018 22:15

@mrstumbletap YANBU at all - I absolutely hate it. The gloopy water left over in the pan after drainage makes my stomach churn Envy (not envy)

halfwitpicker · 06/02/2018 22:16

Cheese sandwiches however are gold

halfwitpicker · 06/02/2018 22:17

^

This is not true.

dailyshite · 06/02/2018 22:19

Dailyshite so basically a very dull cheese sandwich

Confused

How is pasta and cheese a cheese sandwich?

Ribrabrob · 06/02/2018 22:20

geekone genuine question but how is that a 'guilty pleasure'? Sounds perfectly fine to me!

I adore pasta. And agree that if the dish is bland, you're not doing it right!

geekone · 06/02/2018 22:28

ribrabrob Only in the amount I would eat it in lol
I think it's a guilty pleasure as it feels like comfort. Maybe I should have said my comfort food rather than my guilty pleasure.

By the way yes Scottish and a lover of all things carb. Carbs on carbs who doesn't love a pasta butty 😈

altiara · 06/02/2018 22:29

No OP, all of your list are wonderful except for tortellini. And you’ve missed out baked potato. (Although I only read 3 pages of thread so apologies if you did correct yourself!)
In particular lasagna is awesome (not supermarket ready meals) and can be eaten with chips and garlic bread creating a carb heaven trinity. Try it! You won’t need to eat for a week afterwards if you follow it up with tiramisu (not supermarket stuff).

Lweji · 06/02/2018 23:04

Except bread has vitamins, what does pasta have?

Erm... The same thing. Both are made of wheat, primarily.

TriHard27 · 06/02/2018 23:04

You take that back! Grin

tortelliniforever · 06/02/2018 23:09

Tortellini are wonderful if they are tiny, hand-formed by an Italian nonna and cooked in real meat broth (like the ones we had tonight!) Otherwise they are a bit bleeurgh.

SilverySurfer · 06/02/2018 23:33

Couldn't agree more OP - pasta = globules of tasteless yuk even with countless other ingredients added which are supposed to make it edible but don't..

LemonysSnicket · 07/02/2018 00:15

You just can’t cook/haven’t had good pasta then .

gluteustothemaximus · 07/02/2018 00:30

Pasta is delicious, and thank god, bloody cheap.

catwoozle · 07/02/2018 06:15

I bloody love pasta.

10thingsIhateAboutTheDailyMail · 07/02/2018 06:19

Too many Brits just don't know how to cook it.

Imagine if I boiled some potato and a piece of fish, added no.seasoning, and "fish and chips is rubbish!" Wink

With pasta you need a really big pan with very salty boiling water (not a stupid small pan with tepid water, why why why?!)

catwoozle · 07/02/2018 06:21

I despair if people can't cook pasta correctly. It's the easiest thing in the world.

DwangelaForever · 07/02/2018 06:26

You are being very unreasonable 🙈 pasta is the food of the gods! If you've ever been to Italy you will know this

earlylifecrisis · 07/02/2018 06:27

I love it. Also my DC probably wouldn't eat if it wasn't for pasta!!

HuskyMcClusky · 07/02/2018 06:30

It’s just alright, as are potatoes.

Rice? Now you’re talking. Give me rice any day.

nooka · 07/02/2018 06:38

I can't currently eat lots of food, including pasta, because I'm on a FODMAP exclusion diet. I can eat potatoes, which is nice but I do miss pasta very much. And bread. Having to experiment with strange substitutes none of which really work. I love the mouth feel of pasta with a lovely sauce. yum

iamawoman · 07/02/2018 06:38

Fresh pasta is so much better than the cheap plasticy stuff if you can afford it - have been doing low carb and really fancy lasagne for breakfast now !!😀

Mominatrix · 07/02/2018 06:56

YABVU. Pasta is delicious. Unfortunately, the majority of pasta served this country is awful - overcooked and oversauced.

I is not unhealthy - what drivel. Nor is it super processed.

OTOH, I don't like potatoes except fried to a crisp - mushy and the best bit is usually thrown away (the skin).
